For those you not familiar with Bourdain, he’s a travel/food writer and former head chef of Les Halles in NYC, which is where Ruth and I actually had dinner after we got married on Valentine’s Day in NYC. He’s written a few books about food and has a show on the Discover Channel where he travels the globe in search of the perfect meal. Anyway, he wrote a book called Kitchen Confidential (great book, BTW) where he informs us that the single biggest source of food poisoning is raw vegetables, the point being that our anxieties over pork and fish are misguided. Well, sure enough, we got hit with disaster #3, food poisoning, most likely from a salad eaten at the airport, so be aware. One of us isn’t feeling at the top of their game, ... read more

In thinking that we're the sophisticated world travelers now, we got a little too cocky and subsequently paid the price. We'd decided to take the Metro to the airport since it seemed like the thing the locals did and it was going to be about ten times cheaper than taking a cab. Besides, it seemed like a neat adventure, and very doable since the train stops right at the terminal. Well, all went smoothly until we got the airport. We figured that in America, if you get the airport about an hour before a flight, you're in good shape, and though forty-five minutes is cutting it close, it should still be enough time. The flight from Madrid to Rome is about two hours, the same as from Boston to Philly, so we thought, no problem. Little ... read more

We're off for Rome today, and I had some final thoughts on Madrid. In the end, perhaps the city is not the ideal tourist destination, especially with young children. Indeed, even the locals will tell you that as far as sights and attractions, cities like Barcelona and Seville have more to offer. Madrid is a large, busy functional city with lots of restaurants and shopping and plenty of attractive, hip people, and we've enjoyed our time here doing everyday things like eating and exploring the city and simply going for walks. If not for the business/work aspect of our trip and our love for Spain, however, we might not have been inspired to come. Good to know for the future. We love the idea of one day living in Europe, perhaps France or Spain, and the ... read more

Today is our last full day in Madrid, and then on Sunday we're off for Rome, where we have a much more concrete plan for our days. I get a sense that Rome is just more geared towards tourists, and from a homeschool perspective, it seems more accessible. Whatever be the case, we've enjoyed our time in Madrid though I get a sense it's a better town to live in than visit. It's the sort of city that either takes a lot of planning or a lot of time in order to get a real feel for it's true nature. We love cruising the city and eating at the cafes, doing more of what the locals do, but feel that in our short time here maybe we need more bang for our buck. Then again, maybe ... read more

As I mentioned, we had a goal of seeing at least one of the big museums in Madrid, and unfortunately Audrey and Nicholas were going to have to bear with us, because I really don't know if they truly appreciate art at this point. Besides, 16th century art can be scary since it pretty much boils down to one theme-the church, and all the fire and brimstone propaganda. The Prado is located near the Retiro in the center of the city, and there was a Rembrandt exhibit going on at the time. Ruth, being the art historian in the family would have loved to have checked it all out, but we were tired after a long day, and even I liked the idea of dinner and a bed. There was an impressive crowd outside, and we ... read more

I've set up a posh office in the bathroom and must confess that I rather like it. I have my laptop by the sink and I sit on the boudoir (so Euro) and type away. What could be better? Maybe a croissant and cafe au lait, or as they say in Spain, cafe con leche. BTW, Ruth learned a little history about the name of our hotel, and it wasn't as romantic as I had envisioned, but that's okay. It turns out the Hotel Room Mate Laura isn't named after some Medieval Queen, even though pictures of some sort of royal monarch are everywhere. In fact, the hotel is part of a chain, and each branch is named after one of the family members. Ours happens to be Laura. A bit anti-climactic, but a story, nonetheless. ... read more

I just had a few thoughts on things I've found helpful in traveling overseas, and again, all the credit goes to Ruth as far as planning goes. Bear in mind it's all a balancing act between saving money and making the trip as enjoyable as enjoyable as possible. First off, whenever possible, limit connections to the US. When you fly on a budget, it's pretty much impossible to get a non-stop flight across the Atlantic, and sometimes you can end up with multiple connections on both sides of the drink. We've found that connecting in the US is much easier, because once you've done an all-night flight, all you want to do is get to your hotel and settle in, and even that is a trial in and of itself. The last thing you want is ... read more

I know, I know, I'll give the whole European difference thing a rest. I can't help it, though. I don't know what day it is, I've lost track of time, which I take to be a good thing because I feel I'm engaged in living life rather than obsessing over scheduling and time. If only life could always be like that. Last night I woke up at 9:30 and Audrey woke up around midnight. I could hear Ruth and Nicholas stirring and figured it was going to be a long night, but we all managed to fall asleep, and now it's about 9:00 and we can still make breakfast. Speaking of breakfast, as travelers, we firmly believe that you shouldn't stay in a hotel that doesn't include breakfast. It's become much more commonplace, and it's just ... read more

I realize it's only been two days, but we miss our cats. Heck, we've only had them for a couple of months, so we're entitled to pine a little. This highlights one of the best learning aspects of travel, which is the need to operate outside of your routines and be more engaged in your life. We've also found this to be the hardest part of traveling, because life sure is easier when you've streamlined things and no longer have to think. Especially for adults, however, travel really forces you to operate outside of your comfort zone and think about all the things that you take so much for granted. Take, for instance, your toilet. The European toilet is a completely different beast, and though it works just fine, it does take some getting used to. ... read more

It hasn't taken long for jet lag to rear it's ugly head, but it's all part of the journey. It is currently 9:30 PM and I'm wide awake after going to falling asleep hard about three hours ago. I was so tired I couldn't keep my eyes open, and here I am, wide awake. I figured that it was about 3:30 back home, and I generally get up around 5:00, so it makes sense. I figured I sneak into the bathroom and try to get a blog entry in. The pitfalls of traveling on a budget is that we sleep in one room, and while it works out well, we tend to sleep and wake at the same time, and I don't want to wake up the kids. We spent our first day in Madrid, and ... read more
