We had a bit of drama just getting to the airport at the bus station, but it all turned out well and added to the overall adventure of our trip. It was sort of fun, actually, and made it interesting because it forced us to adapt and come up with a new plan. We ended up driving down to New London at their park and ride and catching the bus over there. Luckily, we had a couple of hours to spare, and it wasn't stressful. Looking at the bright side, and you always have to look at the bright side, if we had not gone to A's performance, we would have really been stressed because we would have had no time to spare. Either way, it all worked out. We caught the bus, had some food ... read more

We had a load of things to take care of before we flew out of Boston, but first and foremost was A's performance. She really wanted to get up there and play, so we scrambled to get things finished and wrapped up so we could leave early enough to catch her show, then make it to the bus which would take us to the airport. The show was a lot of fun, and we didn't realize, or rather, nobody told us (wah-wah) that we were supposed to make a lunch reservation and sit for the show. Everyone else seemed to know this, because the place was packed, and everyone sitting in the restaurant was really there for the show. Oh well, live and learn as usual. We managed to sit in the back and not be ... read more

Here I am, already slacking on this blog, and on the cusp of our big journey down that long road to adventure. We have not stopped moving for the past 48 hours, getting ready for this trip. The challenge stems from the fact that our departure just happens to coincide with all of our preparations for Spring. This entails many responsibilities in the yard and around the house. Way too many to think about. I did manage to accomplish many goals, and that feels good upon departure. The wood is cut, this Winter’s wood is mostly stacked, and the yard is in order. I was pondering cutting the grass, but decided to let it grow. Also, I sealed (hopefully) the garden from woodchucks, and the blueberries are properly prepped for Summer. Let’s hope for berries. We ... read more

Talk about a brutal trip home. Much in the spirit of Homer, we began our Odyssey with no idea of what lay ahead for us, and in the end, it was a long journey home, and the truth is, we weren't sure when we'd get back to Hartland. The trip really began on Friday, when we left Rome. We bid adieu to SuiteDreams hotel, and give it a big thumbs up for comfort, quiet, hospitality, and especially warmth. We really enjoyed staying there, the rooms were clean and hip/modern, the internet was free, the movies were available to anyone to watch, the breakfast was outstanding (the croissants blew me away), and our host, Pierfrancesco, the owner, was just an overall great guy. I'd go back there just to see him again, as I consider him now ... read more

Going home, by the waterside I will lay my bones... We are in Philly, it's almost 5:00, and we've still got a long way to go. We've been traveling for about fourteen hours and still have about five more hours to go. That is if things work out smoothly and we make our bus and our car starts in the parking lot. All big "ifs," so we'll see how this goes. I'll finish this blog when we get home, whenever that happens. Until then, thanks for reading.... read more

We had to scramble this morning to make a train to the airport, so I woke up early, took my place in the bathroom, and wrote up an entire entry, only to have the server crash. I lost it all, so here I am, trying once again. Just wanted to slip in a plug for my LL Bean backpack. The thing is amazing. I've stuffed so much stuff in there; water, jackets, cameras, snacks, even forks and knives. Where would I be without it? Yesterday was our final full day in Rome, and we felt we couldn't leave without having seen the two big things, the Sistine Chapel and the Coliseum. What's a trip to Rome without seeing those? The problem is, they are on opposite sides of town, so it was going to take some ... read more

Somehow we all ended up with head colds, and to compound the matter, it's been raining steadily, but that hasn't put a damper on our adventurous spirits. And once again, in the spirit of New York City, once the rains start falling, the umbrella vendors come out in full force. Kind of funny. We had our first breakfast in our new hotel and I must confess to really looking forward to my croissant and cafe solo each morning. Such a great way to begin the day, and I go to bed at night thinking about them. Maybe it's because I'm always hungry. I have found that on vacation I tend to eat a lot less, though the food is richer, it's less accessible and I find I don't snack at night. Just wait until I get ... read more

I learned about that mysterious castle, and it's actually a museum called the Castel Sant-Angelo, which was originally a tomb-turned-fortress, which is now museum that kids can run around in secret passages and rooms. We didn't spend much time there, but it might be worthwhile in the future, though we are running out of time. We had walked a great deal and found ourselves across the river, which I'm embarrassed to say I didn't know the name of. For the record, it's the Tiber River, which was critical to Roman history. Anyway, we found ourselves near the Vatican, and were curious to see what it was really like. After all, if you're a practicing Catholic, it's the place to see. What I didn't realize was how big the place is. In fact, long before you actually ... read more

Okay, so the hotel that we're staying at is called the Albergo del Senato, and it sit literally right next to the Pantheon, which is why Ruth chose it. The location is great, and the square that it is adjacent to is alive with activity, though it is tourist hell. Because of this, however, there are an amazing number of nationalities roaming around, including many Americans, which can sometimes be refreshing when you're a stranger in a strange land and haven't heard spoken English for days. Just a quick side note, we ate breakfast next to a couple from New Hampshire who were celebrating their 45th wedding anniversary. You don't see that too much, anymore. Anyway, our hotel is nice, if not geared to the quintessential tourist. The rooms, not unlike most every hotel I've been ... read more

Sorry, I made a huge blunder, though I wonder how many of you out there picked up on it. The truth is, the structure that we are staying near and have visited is the Pantheon, not the Parthenon. Gosh, how embarrassing. Can you tell I went through school with my head in the clouds?... read more
