Greetings one and all, I just wanted to write and say a little hello to you all and thank you for reading my blog entries so far. As you've probably noticed, I've not actually written in a while, things have been busy and well... I'm nearly a year behind!! I will however rectify this at some point in the near future, but until then, I wanted to let you know that I'm doing well and currently am in New Zealand travelling around in a campervan with Stacy and another friend Holly. I have however started up another blog, one I'm trying my hardest to keep up to date with. So if you're wanting a little read of what I've been up to lately, go to: http://timezonesandtigerbalm.blogspot.com/ and have a read! I hope you're all keeping ... read more

Hong Kong, 16th - 19th August 2008 My third trip to Hong Kong and Macau was no less exciting than my first or second. Infact, there's something to be said for visiting a place, be it a city or indeed a whole country more than once because not only do you get a better feel for the place and experience it in different seasons, you get the chance to absorb all the details you missed the other times and see how things change over time as well as see and do the things you didn't get a chance to do in previous visits or perhaps relive the favourite and memorable moments of past trips. Hong kong is one of two Special Administrative Regions of the People's Republic of China that is made up of over 260 ... read more

August 13th 2008

Tokyo, 13th - 16th August 2008 Tokyo, the capital and largest city in Japan was our starting point for our Japanese adventure and also happened to be our end point. Myself and Stacy were extremely excited to head back and finally get a chance to explore this techno capital, our excitement only marred by the fact that Amy was no longer travelling with us to experience it too. Our highly convenient and cost effective 3 week Japan railpasses had expired while we were at Mt. Fuji so we made our way from the little town of Kawaguchiko to Tokyo using the cheaper option of by coach, which was fairly comfortable as coaches go and it was a nice change not to have Japan's beautiful scenery whizz pass our eyes at neck-breaking speed! Even though we ... read more

Kyoto, 8th - 11th August 2008 Our journey back to civilisation began early on the 8th, the trip from Ibusuki to Kyoto, roughly 900km, consisted of 4 train rides and took the whole day. Our first train took us from Ibusuki to Kagoshima, where we had a few hours to kill before our next train so we checked out the morning market near the train station, did a bit of window shopping, got some lunch, played on the swings in a local playground and found out that in Japan you need a prescription to buy contact lenses - in China you can tell the optician the strength and type of contact lense you want and they'll sell it to you, no questions asked. I should have stocked up before we left China! Our second train ... read more

Mount Aso / Aso San, 4th - 5th August 2008 We took the 1443 train from Beppu to Aso san and arrived a few hours later, in the most desolate town I’ve ever been to. Aso town pretty much consists of a train station, an information centre, a Lawsons convenience store and a few grocery stores that looked more like a jumble of random goods in a cramped little spaces than actual shops. We found our hostel for the night after a 20 minute uphill walk and although it was a little different from previous hostels, it had clean beds and hot running water and we were just glad to put our heavy bags down and rest up after the long journey there. The hostel was run by 2 little old ladies who were very sweet ... read more

Nagoya, 31st July 2008 We left Hakuba in the morning for Nagoya, a stop only made to hunt out the Nagoya branch of the No.1 Travel office to book our flights out of Japan. After waiting around the office for a good few hours, we managed to get our flights sorted (Japan - Hong Kong and Hong Kong - Ho Chi Minh City) and then headed out for some dinner, a wander around Nagoya city and then back to the hotel we’d booked for an evening of playing around in the complimentary kimonos! Not the most exciting of days, but definitely necessary. Hiroshima, 1st - 2nd August 2008 Hiroshima, the city where the first ever atom bomb fell in 1945 is a beautiful spaced out city that understandably promotes peace in a world full of violence. ... read more

Japan! The land of the rising sun, samurai warriors, stealthy ninjas, sushi, high tech gadgets, sumo wrestlers, cherry blossom (although you get that in other countries too) , heated toilet seats, geisha girls, hot springs, sake, love and pod/capsule hotels to name just a few things associated with this prosperous Asian country. I couldn’t wait to get out there and experience all of these things for myself, except for the cherry blossom - wrong season! We left Beijing for Tokyo on the 23rd July, stopping over briefly in Shanghai, which we found amusing since our travels had begun there. I felt a slight longing for my old life in Shanghai then, but that quickly passed when we boarded our flight bound for Tokyo. We arrived in the evening and had our first taster of Japan’s rail ... read more

Xi’an 西安 16th - 18th July 2008 We left Nanjing for Xi’an on another overnight sleeper train, a 20 hour journey this time and our longest yet! This time it was soft sleeper time! Soft sleeper carriages contain individual compartments each with 4 beds, 2 sets of bunks. Both top and bottom bunks have ample space to sit up and move around comfortably in, as well as personal reading lights and individual storage space. Some soft sleepers even come with personal TVs (very luxurious!), although unfortunately nothing of interest (or in English!) is really shown. Our first soft sleeper experience was slightly marred by the middle aged male snorer who was in the 4th bed! He left early the next morning though so thankfully we were able to get a few hours of decent sleep before ... read more

Huangshan 黄山 8th - 11th July 2008 And so the travelling begins. For Stacy and Amy their travels began when they left England for Shanghai on the 23rd June, but for me, my travels began when I left Shanghai, my home for the past year on the 8th July. After a long day of apartment cleaning, last minute errands, a stressful post office visit, a 3 hour wait and a minor arguement with my landlord to get my full deposit back and of course our last meal at Ciao Cafe, it was time to leave Shanghai for our first stop: Huangshan. We had hard sleeper tickets for the overnight train and it was Stacy and Amy's first experience of sleeper trains in China. Hard sleeper carriages are dormitry styled divided into a number of open ... read more

July 7th 2008

Last July I left all that I knew and understood in England for a summer of learning Mandarin in Shanghai. I had the vague idea then that I might stay on for a little longer than just the summer but a year later, I’m still out here and now about to embark on a worldwide travel adventure, lasting… well, who knows how long it’ll last! Shanghai 上海 16th July 2007 - 8th July 2008 Living in Shanghai this past year has definitely been an experience I’ll never forget. I enrolled for the summer language course at Fudan University and during my first few days in Shanghai it very quickly became apparent that life in China was definitely going to be different to life in England! Hardly anyone speaks English, so if you don’t know any Chinese ... read more
