Asia May 20th 2010

Well I'm sure everyone has heard something of the chaos happening in Thailand. I find it hard to believe that just two weeks ago I was enjoying myself in Bangkok and was even staying at a hostel just 10 minute walk from the Red Shirt protest site. We left Chiang Mai on Monday morning and apparently later that day a bus was set on fire there. And just yesterday there were riots that included fires being set at Bank of Bangkok locations as well as the prime ministers house there. But I am safely in Laos now. Despite all the stories i heard about the slow boat to Luang Prabang (2 days on a boat), i really enjoyed it. It was a great time to meet lots of travellers and we got to see some nice ... read more

I'm leaving for Laos today assuming my passport makes it back from Bangkok in time. Today we take a minibus to the border, then I get to spend 2 days on a boat heading to Luang Prabang. Its been getting crazier and crazier in Bangkok. On thursday night, while we were on our trek, our guide came and told us that one of the leaders of the red shirts had been shot and a few others too. He said that it looked like things were going to get worse before they get better, and they have. Since that incident, 33 people have died some of them civilians (media, emergency health workers). And today I just read that the government has turned down the protesters offer to begin talks which makes me think that things will continue ... read more

Today has been a great day for the most part. Danny and I rented a motorbike so that we could get around outside of town a bit. We headed to the tiger kingdom which was AWESOME!!!! (see facebook for tons of pics). I basically got to walk around and watch and take pics of amazing tigers then i pretty much had a PHOTOSHOOT with two of them (eat your heart out Tyra Banks and ANTM!!!). The photographer was hilarious in telling me to spoon with the huge kitty, or lie down on it and close my eyes and pretend to be asleep, etc. ARE YOU CRAZY?? This thing could bite my arm off. But tt was great and I'm still super pumped about it. After that we headed up a massive hill to see Doi Suthep, ... read more

I spent the last three days on a trek in the hills near Chiang Mai. The first day started off a bit slow: we left late, picked up a bunch of people who were all signed up for different treks, stopped at the orchid farm, snake farm, longneck village and the market. We didn't actually start at hiking until nearly 3pm. We started walking uphill on what was supposed to be a gruelling, painfully hot 2.5 hour hike but the gods must have been smiling upon us cuz as soon as we started it got cloudy and even sprinkled a little rain to take the temperature down a solid 5 degrees (down from somewhere around 40 degrees celcius). Our group was mainly young fit people and we managed the hike in 1.5 hours so we got ... read more

I arrived in Chiang Mai yesterday morning after a long trip here from Kanchanaburi with Danny, a guy from England that I have joined up with for a bit. Before leaving Kanchanaburi we had the misfortune to learn that you couldn't buy train tickets online less that 3 days before the train, so we left quickly and caught the next bus back to Bangkok to buy tickets before they sold out. After a 2 hour-turned-3 hour bus ride to Bangkok and a bit of getting lost to pick up Danny's backpack from his hostel, we made it to the train station and got on a night bus to Chiang Mai. I've decided that night trains are the most comfortable form of long distance travel and in spite of sleeping terribly, it was a fun trip. I ... read more

Yesterday's tour proved to have its ups and downs. We started the day with a trip to the Erawan waterfalls which were incredibly beautiful. THere are 7 tiers of falls each a few hundred meters from the next so you can hike your way to the top by stopping and have a swim in each one to cool off (I never would have made it to the top otherwise). The water was soooooooooooooooo nice and cool and the colour in the top fall was an icy blue. Plus, I learned just how friendly Thai people can be as I made a few Thai friends throughout my hike. Next we headed to the elephant trekking which ended up being a walk on the elephant while sitting on a seat on its back through a path. Not terribly ... read more

Holy crap its hot here!!! I left Bangkok this morning and successfully managed to take my first bus all by myself...great success! But since I got here around noon I haven't done anything. I've never sweated so much so constantly for so long. It was so hot that I didn't even leave the hostel until 7pm when it was finally cool enough to do something (and by cool enough i mean 39 degrees). I've signed up for a tour to do elephant trekking, bamboo rafting, waterfalls, and the death train tomorrow but am not sure if I will be physically capable of doing all that in this heat. Nonetheless, I am still looking forward to tomorrow, even if it kills me. FYI, i had phad thai and two chang beers for lunch today and it cost ... read more

I've been in Thailand for two days and I'm already loving it. After meeting up with some other travelers I feel like I am starting to get more comfortable here. Yesterday I spent the day driving around in a tuktuk to see some of the city and shop. We even went by the red shirt demonstrations which were very peaceful and calm possibly due to the large military presence. I didn't realize it until then but the hostel I'm staying at is only a 10 minute walk from where the chaos was a couple of weeks ago. In the evening we went to a night market with every fake designer item I could want!!!!!! Ray Bans (already bought my first pair), Chanel, Prada, Pandora's bracelets, etc. I didn't buy anything except the sunglasses but I am ... read more

Well, this is my first day in Thailand. I arrived around midnight last night after roughly 30 hours of traveling and 14 hour difference in time zone (or 10 hours + 1 day). So far it is early and no one at my hostel is awake but I did speak to some other people last night and I hope to make friends quickly :P. And I still haven't eaten any delicious food yet...very soon! As I was getting on the plane on Monday morning, I decided to check the travel advisories one more time to check on the current status of Thailand and found the unfortunate news that no non-essential travel is advised especially to Bangkok. Things are definitely looking a little worse than before but I have spoken to some travelers and a girl from ... read more
