Vidyal Asia » India » Tamil Nadu » Madurai
For the lecture Tuesday night we had a speaker from an organization called Vidiyal. This organization was devoted to getting "street kids" off the street and into schools/safe environments. I had been trying to volunteer or teach at numerous schools and orphanages since I ahd gotten here only to be rebuffed by most of them. However, when I asked him about helping out he only too excited to have me come. The organization was begun 10 years ago by the man who came to lecture. Don't be fooled by the name... hes Tamil. He went to graduate school in Bombay for [View Full Entry]

So, I remembered the main thing that I forgot to write las time which was about America. I have decided this, America is in Europe. I have come to believe this from a couple things. Firstly because of the racial similarities. When you are in India and see a European only once every couple of days let me tell you, they stand out. You may wonder how people see you so quickly and rush to you asking for money. Well, let me tell you, as soon as a white person enters my field of vision even a hundred yards away in [View Full Entry]

Coaching... kinda, maybe not Asia » India » Tamil Nadu » Madurai
So there is this under 19 soccer team that practices at a "stadium" (fieldhouse with attaxched fields) that i often go to to play ping pong and soccer. They are all very committed and individually very good, even in comparison to Europe and the UNited States. I played with them everyday for the first week, but they don't pass, and have such a lack of soccer knowledge that it was too frusturating to continue. They have a coach, whose only job it is to coach him, but he rarely comes to practicve and when he does, just sits on a bench [View Full Entry]

WWF n Kenyans Asia » India » Tamil Nadu » Madurai
Hey! Good morning from India. I have a new passion though from the title you may have already guessed what it is. Ok, passion is too strong a word, but when on, I thoroughly enjoy watching WWF. I know, I know. I was one of you haters before, and with good reason. But putting judgements aside, this is why I enjoy it. 1) The comedy. Before every "match" there is always a meeting of teamates or the opposition in the hallway. Both men are always absrudly humungous and dressed only in spandex underwear. This is filmed in the mode of soap [View Full Entry]

Attention and Bike rides Asia
So jsut now I got back from a bike ride. I try to go on at least 3 bike rides per week for they are very special here for me. let me tell you why. Here my cracka-ness makes me a novelty. Everywhere I go all eyes, or at least most eyes are on me. At first it is quite a neutral stare, sizing me up, seeing what this foreigner is doing. That attention can be molded and put back to create a positive or negative connection with the person. I see most of the foreigners around me feeling suffocated being [View Full Entry]

Monsoons n such Asia » India » Tamil Nadu » Madurai
So, here I am. Back to the lab again. Now it seems everyone in my family, Ian and my Dad included are coing out to visit me and the thought of that is very, very exciting. While my schedule is now quite set, the time here has not begun to get monotonous. Not by a long shot. I have a lot of free time, sorta, but it never seems like I have enough time during the day. The free time is usually in the morning and between meetings and class, so its usually like 45 minutes here, an hour there. Of [View Full Entry]

Diwali and such Asia » India » Tamil Nadu » Madurai
Saturday was the Diwali festival. I had heard much about it from everyone, yet when they described it, it justy didnt seem that amazing. You buy yourself a new set of clothes, wear them, then set of small firecrackers. Woohoo. Well, it was amazing and heres why: 1) Good company (I went to my friend's family's house) 2) Good food (I honestly think I must have topped 18 dosais for the day. To put that in perspective, each one is about a foot in diameter.) 3) Fireworks 4) Fireworks 5) Fireworks Hopefully you get the point. Here, fireworks really are what [View Full Entry]
