Ah Melbourne. It's reputation already precedes it as a great fun cultural city. I can only second that notion. It is a great city to visit, and a great city to live in, I wager. Upon initial inspection, with my first walk through the CBD (central business district) I was wowed by the variety of restaurants available, and the quality of food is outstanding. The standard fast food was great: the veggie pie at Pie Face is a deliciously messy light curry in pastry, the (all veggie) burgers and fries at Lord of the Fries, and one can easily buy sushi rolls for a few dollars, with massive chunks of avocado in them! I particularly targeted the vegetarian asian food, and I can particularly recommend the Vietnamese Fina's Vegetarian Cafe off of Victoria St, and Ren ... read more

The day starts off cloudy. I'm awake before sunrise, and before then - I never did adjust to sleeping on the mat. I packed up and am off by 7 am. I plan to make it to Geelong by the end of day, which is roughly 110 km. My intermediate goal is to reach Lorne by midday, which is 40 km away. Birds, cicadas, crashing waves - these sounds surround me as I quietly roll north. Northbound traffic is sparse - a couple of delivery trucks and only a few cars. There are quite a few road cyclists going south, and most say good morning or nod. The road is cut into the cliffside and a shoulder is there but it is not wide; I'm glad to be mostly alone. After 9 am the traffic increases ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Lavers Hill January 23rd 2013

Since I've seen so much beautiful coastline, I want to devote some attention to the forests. East of Lavers Hill is the Otway Fly, which provides an elevated walkway through the trees, as well as the more expensive zip-line adventure. The same turnoff also leads to Triplet Falls. Fred suggests to continue east and then cycling south to the coast rather than backtracking. This sounds perfect, because I also avoid the massive hill climb to the west of Apollo Bay. Instead, I can continue east on the Colac-Lavers Hill Road until it hits Forrest-Apollo Bay Road, which is a net downhill, into Skenes Creek, where there is also a caravan park. Otway Fly is enjoyable, and I can get a bird's eye view of the tree ferns. However, I find the landscape more beautiful on the ... read more

I start the day at 7:30; not early enough to see the tops of the 12 Apostles bathed in morning glow, but early enough to mostly own the road. The landscape is beautiful, backlit and glowing. There are fleeting views of the ocean past the hills. It is at this time that I feel that cycling on the Great Ocean Road is truly the best way to experience it. The terrain slowly evolves, giving you time to savor the beauty. Birds flit and tweet to the background drone of the surf. All of this without the din of a motor. I savor the ride, expansive views of the coast, the strength in my legs. I stop at tourist spots: Loch Ard Gorge, 12 Apostles, and Gibson's steps, steps that lead down to the beach. These formations ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Warrnambool January 21st 2013

Excited about the trip, I wake at 3:40 am and for my alarm at 5:45 am, even though the phone is on vibrate. Train to Southern Cross, then train to Warrnambool at 7:19 am. The train was an older style train with storage behind the locomotive; no problems getting the bike on the train. I'd forgotten my papers for the trip, but luckily I can download the Lonely Planet chapter and there is an internet cafe in Warrnambool. At the Visitors Centre I can get all the pamphlets I forgot and even more detailed maps from Parks Victoria. To avoid the A1 motorway out of Warrnambool I take Hopkins Point Road. It is a cycling training road, and the biggest hill of the day comes at the start as the road rises from sea level after ... read more

My next great excursion was a solo cycle along the Great Ocean Road. This coastline is known for the stone formations off the west-facing coastline such as the 12 Apostles, and the road cuts through the Great Otway National Park before hugging the coast up towards Melbourne via the Surf Coast. This bit of road is easily accessible via train transport from Melbourne, on the west end from Warrnambool and the east end Geelong, for a total distance of 450+ km. I would bring only ready to eat food (no stove) and a tent and sleeping bag, to cut down on lodging costs. The trip as outlined in the Cycling Australia book from the Lonely Planet series takes 5 days, and an online account of a trip took 3 days; I hoped I could do the ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Katoomba January 13th 2013

From smoke to fog, atmospheric aerosols impact greatly on our travel to and from Melbourne. We allow two days to get from Sydney to Melbourne, with the Blue Mountains our main priority; should be an easy journey. However by lunchtime in Wentworth Falls a dense fog begins to descend. We enjoy a delicious lunch at the Blue Mist Cafe, and waiting for the fog to lift we browse the bookshelves upstairs. Down the road there is another beautifully kept used bookstore. We visit the falls and despite the fog we can still enjoy the valley view - perhaps the fog gives everything a more ethereal atmosphere. By the time we arrive in Katoomba, the location of the reknown Three Sisters formation, the fog is too thick to drive in and we stay put and hope for ... read more

Ah Sydney. The photos don't represent well our time in Sydney because I was too busy having a good time to be taking photographs. By random happenstance (happy-stance?) we found an affordable room at the Haven Inn off of Glebe Point Road, which was a good start to our time there. It is conveniently located on a quiet road with numerous great restaurants and easy bus transport to the major sites. Wooden floors, balcony, tv with dvd library in the lobby, it's a great hotel. Our first day we targeted all the big city sites: Fish Markets, Opera House, Harbour Bridge. Though we arrived at the Markets mid morning, there were already people partaking of the sea's bounty. As a vegetarian, I found little to get excited about, as the fruit and veggie market, while brimming ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Batemans Bay January 8th 2013

There is a heat wave forecasted with a fire warning. Rather than drive in high risk regions we instead stay in Bermagui and give kayaking a try. We get into singles and first head towards the coast. We turn around before we reach the waves, and realize the reason we got near the mouth of the river so quickly is because we had a tail wind and the tide, which we suddenly need to fight. Progress is slow, and the wind kicks up so strongly that the sail affect of the paddles makes a large impact and there is risk of capsizing. I can see the approaching wind as it roughens the surface of the water and learn to fear it. I try not paddling at all during the gusts but it just turns me around ... read more

We wake up to a clear orange sunrise over the water, broken only by flocks of seagulls. The campground only begins to stir, and we have a leisurely and pleasant breakfast by picnic tables near the water. Back on the road, a wrong turn becomes a welcome detour, as we wade in shallow waters at low tide, the first ones to leave footprints in the sand ripples. Up the coast the Princes highway finally meets the coast at Eden, and in our excitement we explore in detail the turnouts up to Haycock Point in Ben Boyd National Park: Pinnacles, Quondolo, North Long Beach, and Haycock Point. Pinnacles is a white and orange sandstone cliff face, which would be at home in Death Valley. Enroute a couple are staring into the brush, and point to an echidna, ... read more
