Finally get a chance to sit down and write something about the trip to Natron. The next day after breakfast, we walked to the junction of Arusha and Lake Natron since there's no public transportation goes into Lake Natron, so the plan was to hitch a car goes in there, otherwise we'll just catch a daladala back to Arusha. After about an hour and an half, we actually got on a car with full load of Maasai people goes into Lake Natron, the fare is Tsh5000 which is quite reasonable considering that is a 4hr ride if not longer, the ride wasn't too bad, dusty but not quite as bad as Karatu to lake Eyasi, paid $5 at the maasai village, saw all kinds of maasai people since there're all maasai villages along the way. Lake ... read more
On the 2nd day of placement, we were heading to lake Eyasi for taking some pics on flamingos because an indian company was trying to build a plant over there which apparently would destroy the breeding area for flamingos, WCST won the case very recently so we want to get a bit more info and write an article publish on the magazine. To get to lake Eyasi we have to catch a daladala to a small town called Karatu first, it's about 2hrs ride, Karatu is extremely dusty, we had a lunch there, cost Tsh2500 for Wali Samaki(rice and fish), pretty reasonable, Elvis messaged his "friend" who is a camp manager at lake Eyasi so we met with him at Karatu and caught a bus to the lake, I'm pretty shocked of how old the bus ... read more
Finally I run out of my last clean underwear, guess it's laundry time, we have two options here, pay Tsh4000($3.5) to have the kids wash for us or buy soap and wash ourselves, frankly, never been a big fan of laundry, bring the clothes down to basement even considered as a waste of time back home, since there was always lots of other more "important" things to do, no matter it's work or sports or socializing or entertainment, since I'm here so far away from all that stuffs and so much time to spare, I guess there's no such thing as a waste of time so I might as well just do it by myself, washing wasn't too bad, took me about 1.5hrs to get the full load done plus the sandal and flip-flop. so hopefully ... read more
It's the last day of training week so we're having an amazing race in the afternoon, not surprisingly what we need to do is to fulfill a bunch tasks by the given clues we have, tasks like go to the clock tower find someone you know for the next clue, catch a daladala to "friends corner", go to post office send a post card, go to central market buy some fruits for less than Tsh500, go to TTCL and make a local phone call, etc. it was actually quite fun, we were running like crazy on the street and people were yelling at us like "there's no run in Africa", I did most of tasks fairly quickly but fell short in the internet cafe, the computer I got was pretty crappy, take like 15mins to access ... read more
Since it's a Sat, I planned on sleep in this morning, got up at about 8:45am which is fairly late compare to the weekdays, we're going to a quick hike at lake Duluti today, set off at around 11am, took the daladala to the trailhead, paid around $10 for entrance fee and a ranger with us. it is a very easy hike around the lake, on a sunny day, we should be able to see Mt. Kili and Mt. Meru around, but unfortunately it's quite cloudy today so we weren't able to see anything, lake Duluti is ok, nothing spectacular, I guess it'll be better if it's sunny, what I liked about here is it so quiet since we're almost the only group on the trail, compare to all the other hikes I've been onto, it's ... read more
Other than the language training in the morning, we went to a local market out of town, it takes about an hour of to get to there by Daladala, Daladala is minibus, have lots of this in smaller town in China, you can get on/off anywhere you want to even though they do have certain dedicated stops, the route is recognized by the color painted on the bus, the difference between Daladala and public bus is Daladala normally go further out of town while the public bus only run inside of Arusha, it cost about 1000Tsh($1) to get to the market. Market is pretty ... DUSTY, lots of stuffs, cheaper than in town. Stop by the gym in Arusha hotel, paid 7000TSH for drop in, it's typical hotel gym, pretty limited equipments, brand new though, nice ... read more
