Europe » Spain » Cantabria » Santander December 14th 2009

Today marks a week that I have been in Bezana/Santander staying with our old friends Nisio and Pili. I feels like two days. This was the first time in almost three months that I've seen someone familiar - before now everyone were new acquaintances. It is so relaxing to be here. I loved the farm work, but it has been nice to have a break where I don't have to work every day. For almost this whole week the weather has been incredible (although totally rare for December in Northern Spain) - I went swimming twice in the ocean. The sea was chaotic but I had a blast body-surfing. I went on a 42K bike excursion with Jesus and Ana (those pictures are still on my camera so you'll have to wait) and yesterday we went ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Tarragona November 26th 2009

Well, it turns out I do have internet on this farm. But there is a password and I have this feeling only the parents get to know, so I haven't asked for it yet. And I'm pushing my siesta a little bit, so this will be relatively short (although I've noticed that every time I say that the entry just get's extra long). I am in a town of about a hundred people, called Les Piles. This is a family farm. The dad is one of a long line of farmers and the land is passed down through generations, which is pretty cool. The mom is a nurse in a hospital in a neighboring town, and there are three kids (ages 10, 8, and 6). No other WWOOFers, which is too bad, but I have a ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona November 19th 2009

So my day and a half in Barcelona was pretty good considering I spent a sizeable amount of it trying to buy a spanish sim card. But after about 4 hours my hard work paid off and I'm really happy with the plan i got. Thankfully the farm I contacted was okay with my last-minute request, and so in a couple hours I'll be headed to Les Piles, in tarragona for a few weeks. I will have almost no Internet access there, so it will be a while until the next entry. Highlights of barcelona? Parc guell. It wa actually the only place I had time to go during the day, but luckily I've been to Barcelona before, so i wasn't missing out on things I'd never even had the chance to see. And I've found ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome November 17th 2009

Well, I've made one big circle around Italy. I'm leaving the country exactly where I entered it. How symbolic. Anyway, right now I'm at Emanuela's house. She is a friend of Renuka, the owner of Ecole Ci-Trullo, that I just left. It has been great to have her hospitality, and also not to have to pay for a hostel. I can also use her internet, which is also great. Yesterday Miriam, Renuka, and I all went to Bari. Renuka restores medieval paintings at a small museum there. So Miriam and I got an exclusive look at all the artwork. It was really cool. A lot of it hadn't been restored yet, so it was in the original condition it was found in. Some of the paintings dated back to 950 CE. At some point I'll have ... read more

Europe » Italy » Apulia » Ostuni November 4th 2009

Ok, I guess it's time for a longer installment. There isn't actually any Internet here either, but there is an Internet cafe roughly close by. We went last night but I didn't have time to write an entry. I was busy researching flights and hostels for my next planned stops. But that comes later. So last post I explained the situation of Antonio the creeper.  The expected wwoofer, gisela, did end up arriving that nght, to my great relief. She was quite the character. She is a 42-year-old German woman who had been traveling and doing various internships and work exchanges and travels for 5 and a half years. She spoke all the same languages I do: Spanish, English, Italian, and German. She had traveled the Americas from Canada to chile. She was one of ... read more

Europe » Italy » Apulia » Brindisi October 31st 2009

This is going to be a short entry because I don't have much time. I don't have internet on this farm, and right now I'm at an internet cafe. I'll explain the longer story later. The gist of it is, this farm isn't so hot. But don't worry, I'm OK. I'm leaving on Monday for another farm where there are a bunch of WWOOFers that are 18. Party! I hope. But anything will be better than where I am now... I arrived at this farm to find that not only are there no other WWOOFers, but the couple who was running the farm together recently divorced. So, it was me and a 40- or 50-something (I'm guessing) recently divorced Italian man with a bad cough. I was a little freaked out the first night. But I ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence October 26th 2009

ciao everybody! It's my last night in Firenze (Florence for all you gringos... Just kidding :) ) and I finally have time to write an entry. Thankfully this hostel has wifi, but only on the first floor. But hey, works for me. Actually, the hostel itself is an interesting story. Ah yes, Interesting story #6 (and yes, I know it's ridiculous to try to keep track because obviously I have more than 6 interesting stories to tell. And I know the first "interesting story #3" got cut off and I don't remember what it was but bear with me): I was originally planning to stay in a hostel from a list mika gave me. But. There are a couple of train stations in firenze, and of course, being me, I got off at the most remote ... read more

Europe » Italy » Emilia-Romagna » Bologna October 24th 2009

Well, I'm headed off. It is getting too cold here, and I don't have room for more clothes in my bag even if I bought warmer ones. Anyway, work here slows and then stops in the winter. And the olive harvest is starting further south. So, time for the next part of my adventure. I arrive at my next farm, Azienda Agricola Biologica Millefoglie, on October 31st. Until then, I am making a little tour of cities mid-Italy. First stop, Firenze (Florence in English). After that, I'll be taking the train to Arezzo (I think) and then hiking 20-40 K a day (we'll see how much I can manage with my pack) between some smaller cities. I'm pumped. I'm not sure what kind of communication I'll have, so I may write one summarizing blog thingy at ... read more

Europe » Italy » Emilia-Romagna » Bologna October 12th 2009

I have a little bit of time before lunch today, so I get to write another installment. I just got back from an exhilirating 4K run. The first half is completely uphill, and since it’s an out-and-back type of run, the second half is almost entirely downhill. Interesting story #3 (I think. I've lost count of how many): About 30 seconds into the second half of the run it started to pour. It was amazing. As cliché as it sounds, I felt completely alive. The way rain looks as it falls on nearby mountains is indescribable. Anyway, I got back to Il Granello entirely soaked. The first words Elisa and Romano said to me were “docia calda”, “hot shower”. That kind of exemplifies the mood here. Everyone has so much care and tenderness for each other. ... read more

Europe » Italy » Emilia-Romagna » Bologna September 29th 2009

Ciao a tutti! (Hi everyone!) This entry will be short because the computer at this farm is slow, and they pay internet per minute, not a flat rate. I love it here! I am in the middle of the mountains in the middle of nowhere. There are 9 people living on the farm currently: Elisa and Romano (the owners), Lorenzo, Alice, and Gabriele, their children, Claudia and Michael (WWOOFers from Switzerland), Arnt (a WWOOFer from Norway), and me. So far, I have planted fennel and mint, cut back invading mint plants, potted mint plants, weeded, and made dirt from compost. I discovered that I love the smell of dirt. I also love the smell of all the herbs we grow here. Too many to name. I am learning Italian and it is going pretty well. I ... read more
