Another enormous gap and now I realise that if I continue at this rate Iīll only do another three or five entries by the end of the trip. Thatīs no good. Split So. After checking into the hostel in Split, we had a bit of a chill day. Kathleena decided she was going to go shopping, and we walked around and around the old town. There are narrow cobbled streets, lots of marble, and some very, very old buildings. Itīs right on the sea, but the sea isnīt quite as nice as Dubrovnik. The reason for Split being a big tourist [View Full Entry]

So! I've been lax again with the blog and as always it bites me in the ass. Remembering what I've done each day, organising it, etc. Here we go. On friday we left Sarajevo after a nice stay there enjoying the old town. Our last day we went to see Tunel 3A. This is a tunnel that the Bosnians dug during the siege, under the UN-controlled airport and to free Bosnian territory outside of Sarajevo. It was a real lifeline for the people there-supplies, food, ammunition, everything came through there. They showed us a video with a bunch of war footage-bombs [View Full Entry]

Sarajevo

Well here we are in Bosnia, after a grueling twenty four hour commute from Sofia, Bulgaria. We've been on four trains, two of them transnational, and when we arrived last night, we were absolute shells. Completely knackered, running on fumes. We arrived at the Sofia train station two nights ago with minutes to spare, and spent a few frenzied minutes running around (backpacks on) trying to locate our train. It adds a whole new level of difficulty to things when the country you're in uses a completely different alphabet than you're own. Like, it's still Cyrillic, like they use in Greece, [View Full Entry]

sofia day two

 Europe » Bulgaria » West » Sofia
And so draws to a close our time in Bulgaria. Tonight at 2120 we'll be catching a night train to Belgrade, in Serbia, because you can't go straight to either Dubrovnik or Sarajevo from here. I don't know why, and neither does anyone who works at the bus station. So yesterday we got up kind of late because of a late night, but still just in time for some of the free breakfast here at Hostel Mostel - hard boiled eggs, toast with cream cheese, tomatoes, and salami. Just what you need. After that we hung out and socialised a bit [View Full Entry]

here

So I'm here in Sofia, the first city of Bulgaria. It's much different from Greece, and I've only seen it from the inside of a bus, and between the bus station and my hostel. Which is called Hostel Mostel. Sweet. Greener, hillier, much much cooler. It's good to be out of the heat! How Canadian of me, I know. So today we left Thessaloniki, finally, around three thirty. I bought some shoes for five euros; they look like vans slipons made of hemp fishnet, and we've only seen fishermen and the homeless wearing them. My ploy is to look as poor [View Full Entry]

So this is our last full day in Greece. We've been in Thessaloniki for about three or four days now, just waiting for our train. It's winding me up like a spring, and tomorrow I'm going to spring north into the Balkans. So here I am getting some Internet done, soothing my headache with some Dead Kennedys. Bad idea? Tomorrow we're going to catch a train to Sofia, in Bulgaria, and spend like two days there before heading southwest to Croatia. It'll be good to be in another country, another region, I'm totally ready for another culture. I'll probably buy a [View Full Entry]

Well, another week without affordable internet resources, another week-long break between entries, and again I have a lot of catching up to do. SO, shortly after my last entry we boarded a ferry for Patmos and arrived late at night. We were picked up at the port by Theo, the owner of Yvonne's studios, the place where we'd reside for the next four nights. We were pleasantly surprised to find a kitchenette with a stovetop and sink and some counter space. We had a great view from our balcony; on our left the tourist-town of Skala, which is situated on the [View Full Entry]

I'm at the third item in the title. We have an afternoon-long stopover here in Rhodes town, so it's a good opportunity to hit the post office, laundromat, internet cafe, etc. So on Monday evening we arrived in Nisyros and I gotta say that I misrepresented it in my earlier posting; It's not an apocalyptic rock spire jutting out of the sea with a measly peasantry ekeing out an existence on seaweed and goat-milk/meat, which is kind of what I'd pictured in my head, the only pictures I'd seen being those of the volcano proper, which I will get to. So [View Full Entry]

I thought I'd detail another aspect of Rhodes. The old town of Rhodes is encircled by these tall, thick stone walls built to repel any kind of siege. The old town is like a fortress. Kathleena and I were walking and I happened to see a short row of square holes through the wall. I could see vegetation through the holes and they were big enough for me to crawl through without any squirming or fuss. So I did, and found myself in an arched little space close to the ground. I stuck my head out and, seeing no video cameras, [View Full Entry]
