So it took us a full 24 hours to travel from Ko Pha Ngnan back to Bangkok, but surprisingly worked out pretty well. Taxi - Ferry - Bus - Train - Metro... 24 hours. We took our last overnight train back to Bangkok with the plans on arriving at 9 AM. When we still seemed to be traveling through the country around 10:30, we started to wonder... our train had gotten into an accident in the middle of the night and was delayed 6 hours! Luckily we were both passed out beyond belief and didn't seem to notice except for a [View Full Entry]

We're nearing the end of our stay here in Koh Pha Ngan. It's been VERY nice and relaxing. Our place is amazing... we're staying in a resort named Sarikantang. The weather has been great.. although a storm is just on the horizon right now. It started pouring last night randomly harder than we've ever seen! But only lasted 5 minutes!! And it's still close to 90 degrees, so it's great! You got to love the island life! Yesterday, we booked a half-day safari trip through the place that we're staying. They took us up to Chaloklum to go elephant riding, over [View Full Entry]

Our bungalow

We left our beach bungalow in Koh Samui today and hopped the ferry over to our next island Koh Pha Ngan. Short half hour boat ride and we were there¡K luckily, thanks to Karen¡¦s advice we packed a bunch of Bonine for our trip and took it before any rides on trains/boats¡K for someone that gets carsick/seasick¡K or pretty much any kind of motion sickness - THIS IS KEY! Dad¡K I¡¦m getting you to pack these on our next Hawaii trips so that the two of us don¡¦t end up hurled over the side of all of our boat rides! It [View Full Entry]

Gekkos everywhere!

First things first... the quail and I are OK and completely seperate from anything going on in Bangkok. Now for the post.... Today we set out to Anh Thon National Marine Park for a day of sea kayaking and snorkeling. We booked it through Blue Stars Charter Service which we found to be a very well run operation. A little word of advice, don’t go for the snorkeling. Visibility is at about 1 foot and the water is very murky so you basically run into the sights before you actually see them, (problem of course because of the sea urchins have [View Full Entry]

Singh Beer... YUM!!
Green Lagoon
Sea Cave

Well I got what I asked for¡K a beach bungalow DIRECTLY on the beach¡K. Literally. However, I failed to realize that a few of what I previously considered ¡§standard¡¨ accommodations are now definitely ¡§luxuries¡¨. It was a ¡§treat¡¨ to wake up each morning wondering what new creature had crawled up the hole we have in our bathroom¡K if you can call it a bathroom! Apparently it¡¦s much nicer than some on the island based on other people we¡¦ve talked to, but I guess my expectations were a wee bit too high (or as Marcos tells me¡K I was expecting the Westin [View Full Entry]

We don't have a picture to prove it, but we just had to post our fun little experience in Chaweng with a monkey, iguana, and boa constrictor. Yes, you heard it right... all three - in one place - ON TOP OF US! The trifecta! We had spent the night out on the town touring the restaurants and bars in the area when we were sipping some cocktails at a lounge with an outside balcony overlooking the streets of Chaweng. We watched as this Thai man walked up to tourists throwing a monkey in their arms, starts to take a picture [View Full Entry]

So we decided to take the overnight train from Bangkok to Koh Samui… I think I’ll opt for flying next time! Just kidding, it really wasn’t that bad, but it definitely took some adjustment in my mind when we first got on there (as apparently are a lot of things during this trip! All the more fun though as I look back on everything and adjust to the Thailand ways…). I had never been on an overnight train before, so I guess I was kind of expecting the look and feel of Caltrain with some beds…haha - no. We were greeted [View Full Entry]

I am a bit tempered already to the humidity and heat, the last PlanetMagpie trip to North Carolina I can thank for that but it still hits you like a brick wall in this place. We shuffle through customs, get our bags, and grab a shuttle to our first hotel Chateau de Bangkok. Which much to our surprise is right behind the Conrad Hotel on Wireless road which for some reason I have stuck in my head as a reference point. I’ll thank Captain Poddy from PodAsia for that one. But it have to say listening to all our podcasts and [View Full Entry]

Bedroom
Living Room
Bathroom

All I can say is good thing that I've got you-know-who by my side constantly tapping me from behind or steering me in the right direction as I start aimlessly following the local crowds down towards the trains going in the opposite direction. My first impression of Bangkok? Crazy. Overloaded by the heat and a different "unusual" smells as we go down different alleys go from aromas of different food to awful stenches of god-knows-what. The hustle and bustle of the city is definitely exciting as we found our way around the sky-train stations and through the ferries with all the [View Full Entry]
