Today we visited a rice mill at Baan Suan. The Thais take rice very seriously - it's their biggest export. If your idea of rice is a box of Minute Rice, you have missed out! Try getting a bag of jasmine rice at your local Asian market. It has a fragrant aroma and tastes light and delicious. I rinse the rice before boiling it, which makes it less clumpy. Anyway... we saw how rice is hulled and produced in various forms, from whole brown rice to fine rice flour. We then stopped at Sukhothai historical park. It is an amazingly beautiful park with many ancient monuments. Sukhothai was the first kingdom of Thailand in 1238. The Buddhist statues and wats obviously had old Cambodian influences. Ole showed us some artist renderings of what the original buildings ... read more

We made a "rat stop" on our way to Phitsanuloke today. Country rat - not it's more sinister urban cousin - is prized as a tasty meal in Thailand. It was a good photo op. We also stopped at a ceramic factory where we watched artisans hand painting vases, cups and other porcelain dishes. Their work was gorgeous, so I ended up buying a few things. Maybe it's all a cross-marketing scheme. They get you grossed out by the rat, so you'll be excited to buy when you see the lovely porcelain tableware. Near lunch time, we stopped at the Uthai Thani market. Ole gave each of us a slip of paper with a Thai grocery item listed on it. We then had to take our paper and find the item in the market. I thought ... read more

Today we took a longtail boatride along the River Kwai and saw lots of beautiful birds, animals and plants. We took a pick-up truck to Hellfire Pass, which was one of the areas cleared by POWs for the railroad during WWII. It was called Hellfire Pass because of the ghostly shadows cast by the men while they worked through the night by firelight. We took a train ride along the original route, then stopped to visit a Buddha statue in a cave. We also stopped to see some monkeys by the road. These were very spoiled monkeys -they rejected bananas in favor of potato chips and peanuts! We had a "European" style dinner at the resort. It was very good - salad, chicken with mushroom sauce and pasta. I am not tiring of our Thai menus, ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Western Thailand » Kanchanaburi November 14th 2005

Today we traveled from Bangkok to the Kanchanaburi province, where the Bridge over the River Kwai is located. We stopped by the village of Samutsongkram, where the Siamese Twins were born in 1811. This is the kind of information you get from a guided tour that you would never discover on your own. Our tour guide, Ole, is a wonderful host - full of historical information and great anecdotes about Thai culture. We got into longboats and toured the "back alleys" to the River Market area. There were a lot of interesting sights along the way - kids swimming in the river, houses hanging onto the banks by a thread, a HUGE spider, spirit houses, and colorful birds. After visiting the River Market, essentially an over-priced tourist mall, we took the bus to a wood carving ... read more

Today, we toured the city, including China Town, Wat Traimit (the temple of the Golden Buddha - all 5.5 tons of him), Wat Pho (the Reclining Buddha, also lots of gold), ate lunch on a big river boat, walked through heavy rain back to the bus, and had dinner at the Suan Lum night market in Bangkok.... read more

Today we had our trip briefing, where Ole (pronounced "Olay") gave us an overview of our itinerary and we introduced ourselves to each other. In our group, we have 3 couples and the rest singles, mostly adventursome women like me :). I'm the youngster in the group, which is just fine by me. We visited a beautiful flower market where flower dealers made gorgeous arrangements for sale to local shops. For price comparison - a huge bouquet of exotic flowers in Bangkok will cost about $25, compared to $100 or more in the U.S. We took a longboat ride on the Chaophraya river, and saw many river homes, temples and other buildings along the way. The boat was a loud, diesel-motored contraption. We stopped for a cooking demonstration at the home of Mrs. Toom. She was ... read more

We arrived in Bangkok close to midnight on Friday, Nov. 11. The glowing city lights glittered in every direction. I'm very tired, but excited to actually be here! The weather is delightfully warm and our hotel is lovely. There was an orchid on my pillow. Just like home... NOT.... read more
