We all awoke at 06:45 to the sounds of the ships engines getting us underway and Skipper Ray announcing that we had had a snowy late spring night! In fact it snowed pretty much all day. As great as this looked and sounds, snow wasn't on our (clothing) itinerary & we spent most of the day fairly cold and looking enviously at others with full winter gear. Ah, the joys of traveling light! Though obviously this made for some magnifcent sights! After a cooked and continental breakfasts we once again headed for the ships bridge. Which to our surprise yesterday is open to all and offers the best viewing location. Today we managed to see a dozen or so dolphins heading out to see to feed, but the main attraction being the fiord itself, this time ... read more

As forecasted the weather turned for the worst over night and the rain came in. However it seems that it rains for 200 days in a year in Doubtful Sound so at least we get to see it at it's norm! Charlie went for a run which included Doc Bay and then we set off on the 24 hour cruise around midday. The trip to get to Doubtful Sound (a Fiord not a Sound as such) entailed a 20 minute coach leg, followed by a 50 minute, 30km boat trip on Lake Manapouri and finished with another coach trip of 45 minutes over the gravel road over Wilmot Pass! The views en route set a pretty high standard for the Sound to follow! The "Fiordland Navigator" is charming sleeping 70, we were Steerage sleeping just on ... read more

Awoke at 05:10 to the very loud banging on the door by a big burly security guard from the town council, to be told that we couldn't camp overnight! Okay so we saw the signs but having seen others over the last week or so doing the same we had decided to take the risk! After a brief snooze we headed back into town for a walk along the beachfront and to suss out a Doubtful Sound Cruise for tomorrow. Before heading of for Te Anue we decided to visit Puzzleworld with it's 3D maze and Hall of Illusions! We got around in 35 minutes just missing half hour mark by a turn or two (normally takes 30 - 60 minutes, average 45!). The Hall of Illusions was a great laugh as we saw water and ... read more

Fun on Ice. Charlie woke early to go for a nine miler around Lake Matheson leaving me to enjoy an extra hours shut eye! In the morning we went for a walk before the midday excitement of a Helihike ($380 pp)! This emcompassed two ten minute helicopter flights and about three hours on the Glacier itself! The glacier sees about 50 meters of snow a year which means that the glacier can move around 5 meters a day! We were dropped at around 700 meters or 2300 feet altitude. The Guide (Mike) walked us around showing and telling us about the features of Glaciers including some really spectacular "Pressure Caves" which are like tunnels in the ice! It feels pretty cool sitting and standing inside a Glacier! One of our party of six managed to partly ... read more

Rain, rain and more rain! Woke to find out that the van has a slight defect, it LEAKS! The foot of our bed managed to get drenched in the very heavy rain that came in overnight! Headed in to Hokitika to get a roll of Duct Tape and to visit a Jade Factory / shop. Having sealed the van against further downpours we set off for the three hour trip to "Fox Glacier" having decided to skip "Franz Joseph" for the quieter town and less touristy glacier. Also added to the equation is the relationship my Grand parents have with Foxes Glaciers! Fortunately the weather picked up as we were approaching Fox to end the afternoon in full sunshine. Having booked ourselves into a site and onto a trip up the Glacier tomorrow we decided to ... read more

East to West! Awoke to the sound of the waves gently lapping on the beach. Decided to go for a stroll along the beach before our early (08:30) swim with Dusky Dolphins. On turning to return to the van we were met with the most fantastic view of distant snow capped mountains (not visable to us last night in the dark)! What a awesome experience it is to swim with Dolphins! Once we got over the "refreshing" 12C water (even in full wetsuits it takes a second or two to get your breath) we were in amongst a very large pod. Within a minute myself and Charlie had a group of five Dusky Dolphins swimming with us! The dolphins are completely wild (though not fuming) and are not fed or otherwise enticed. This means if the ... read more

Sun, Sun, Sun! Charlie went for another run leaving me to the chores yet again! Today we bid a farewell to the North Island and sailed across to the South Island on the Wellington to Picton Ferry! Before our early afternoon crossing we ventured to Porirua & Titahi Bay for a look around, walk and grocery shop. What a beautiful little place, very quaint bay, well worth the visit! The crossing between the islands was very scenic, especially the section going through the Marlborough Sounds! From Picton we headed along Highway 1 (the Kiwi's have a good sense of humour - this is a single lane road) to our first destination Kiakoura where we hope to be swimming with Dolphins before noon tomorrow! The 2.5 hour journey supplied us with the best views so far! The ... read more

Not the greatest starts with thw weather not really cooperating - Windy & Cloudy. Set off bright and early into Wellington on the bus (with a near miss for myself with the local traffic!). Spent a few hours in the morning in Te Papa (Museum of New Zealand) and the rest popping in and out of numerous shops! Unfortunately we didn't time the weather very well in the afternoon. We decided to take the Red Cable Car (& Museum) to the top and walked back down in the rain through the Botanical Gardens. Only to spend the rest of the afternoon shopping in the sun! In the evening we went into cyberspace updating the blog and emails, then a few hours realising I'll be driving a LONG way (& time) in the South Island and planning ... read more

Awoke to brilliant sunshine. Needed sunscreen for the first time in NZ! Charlie once again left me with the chores and went for another 45 minute costal run! After breakfast we headed into Napier for a visit to "Opossum World", which is basically an excuse to sell Possum fur products! Had a brief shopping trip where Charlie bought herself a bargain ring and I trusted my barnet to a Man Utd barber! Left sunny Napier with a little regret as it seemed a really cool place, and headed for (what turned out to be a very windy and cold) Wellington! The trip of 300 Km with a stop for lunch around took 4.5 hours to make, with high winds. But what a trip up and over another mountain range (no mention of names for any of ... read more

Wow, what a cold night (temperatures drop for snow to fall on nearby Mountains), neither slept overly well whilst wishing for a blanket! Charlie decided to go for a 45 minute run to warm up leaving me to get the van shipshape! Our parting event was to go for a Jet boat ride at Huka Falls. The 30 minute ride was a laugh with the boat going very close to the rivers edge and 360 degree turns! I persuaded Charlie that the ride would be the less terrifying if we got the front two seats (Hook, Line & Sinker!). To say we were thrown about would be an understatement, but after 5 minutes Charlie was smiling and even looking over the visor! We then headed for Napier on the East coast, about a two hour journey, ... read more
