After a quick stop over in Bangkok Airport between flights we arrived in Krabi to a cloudy welcome! Unlike Chiang Mai our hosts picked us up and transferred us via car and Long Boat to Railay. The initial view that greeted us didn't exactly fill us with joy, but we soon realised that we were going in through the tradesman's entrance, also known as East Railay! East Railay is a backpackers haven and a 'flash-packers' hell. Full of roughly constructed bars, restaurants and budget hotels, all fronted by a forest of mangroves. West Railay on the other hand has hotels I'm happy to dwell in and a beach that shouts Thailand, long, arced and with tall cliff mounds at either end. On the other side of one of the cliffs was a beach offered the most ... read more

Now for the day I was looking forward to the least! Come on, who really wants to go on a Mountain bike ride when the temperature is in the mid 30's, oh yea, that would be Charlie! On a plus point we weren't being picked up until 09:30, which for us is now classed as a lay in (bring on the Beach section). Another plus was that the ride was 90% downhill, though we're not talking roads here, we're talking dirty tracks with rocks, ruts and roots strewn across you path. But the briefing and all the kit (helmets, gloves, arm and leg pads) were all professional. Due to an illness of one of our group we were reduced from four to just us. This actually paid off as our guide was very friendly, chatty and ... read more

Today was supposed to be another relaxing day, this time spent at the Thai Farm Cooking School. We were picked up at 08:30 and along with four others taken to a local market where they introduced us to some of the ingredients we'd be using throughout the day! We were then given fifteen minutes to browse. From here we headed off to the school seventeen kilometers outside of the city. The first half an hour were spent walking around the farm and getting familiar with the other ingredients. We were then guided unaided in cooking 5 different dishes each. But I'm sure like the Bali Cooking class we undertook 2 years ago the Cook book we received will go unused... Suitably (& surprisingly) shattered from the class we took a long soak before taking a walk ... read more

What a day! We got picked up at 09:00 and head straight to Tiger Kingdom. Where they house 33 Tigers (& a Lion), though this isn't your normal Tiger centre. No here you get in and Pet the Tigers! Umm, I know what your thinking and I can't discount the use of drugs either (the Tigers, not us, though that would of helped)! As it was all Charlie's idea I let her choose which cage we entered, fortunately she choose the 'Smallest'. This involved us spending 10 minutes with 2 baby Tigers which were only two and a half months old. Though Charlie being Charlie, I had to be first into the Lions Den so to speak. The first one (Nu-lu) was 'feisty' to say the least, in fact when he smelled (intentionally) my feet, I moved ... read more

A relaxing day of mooching around Chiang Mai organising our next few days activities was mingled with shopping for Charlie! After trudging around the City in and out of Tailors we finally decided to go with the one we had visited on our first day. Hopefully we'll be picking up a couple of new skirts for Charlie on Saturday! No content with the new skirts Charlie then splashed out on, not one, but two new pairs of glasses as well! Though at Thai prices it seems remiss not too. Both looking forward to a busy day tomorrow visiting tourists hot-spots! ... read more

After a fairly early rise we checked out and headed to the airport, traffic doesn't normally move very fast in Bangkok, but at 09:00 it doesn't move at all! After 15 minutes we'd progressed 200 yards. I think at this point our driver saw Red, the next thing we knew were weaving in and out of traffic, jumping red lights, scaring the Hell out of pedestrians. I was liking this guy (even if he did play Dido!), the next thing we knew we were under and overtaking everything in sight. Even with the slow start we made the trip in 35 minutes, well under the quoted hour)! The flight to Chiang Mai (though taking off an hour late) was uneventful, just a pity our hotel pickup left without us (looking at his job title, he must ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok November 22nd 2010

Once again our day started slightly later than we'd had hoped, I tried putting it down to let lag but I it was more down to a really comfy bed. The Park Plaza isn't ideally situated being a fair way from the Old City our destination for today. After a quick Metro underground ride we then endured a 15 minute walk to a Pier on the river which then took us to (within walking distance to) the Grand Palace! It would seem (or possibly not!) that there was a 'private' ceremony to celebrate the Buddhist New Year and we couldn't go in until 13:00 (yep, that old chestnut)! Which left us to enjoy our first Thai Tu-tu trip! Our first stop was to see the Standing Buddha, at an impressive 35 meters it was worth the ... read more

Awoken by our alarm clock at 08:00 we started our day as if 3 hours sleep was enough for any man! This mornings destination via the Sky Train was the Sunday Market at Chatuchak Park, 35 acres of covered stalls. Half of which sold the Classics from Nike to Kath Kitson (can I go know where in this world and not be confronted with kitch)! The other half comprised of Tat, General Tat and not forgetting a whole section devoted to Weddings, which we 'managed' to stumble into... The highlight for myself was seeing TNT and DHL stalls, strategically placed to enable tourists to send home the assorted house hold tat they've burdened themselves (and Partners) with. Fortunately Charlie decided that it was too early in our trip to go on a spending spree. However I'm ... read more

Here I sit at 03:25 tapping out our blog on the first day of nineteen visiting Thailand! Anyone heard of jet lag... After an uneventful and surprisingly short flight of 10 hours 20 mins we landed in the heat and humidity of Bangkok at 16:00! Thankfully visa entry went without a hitch, I think Charlie had the happy of the two immigration officials we encountered, mine didn't say a word and looked at me like I was a sex tourist (read deviant)! Though having seen my fellow passengers I think there might have been one, two or a hundred on board... Once we had eventually found the Public Taxi rank it was then down to negotiating the fair to our hotel. This was surprisingly easy, partly down to travelling with a tired feisty Charlie and partly ... read more
