Buenas dias chicos Pura vida! I am sat in my room in the Best Western Hotel in Liberia, eating nachos with cream cheese and carton of wine, finishing this blog as I have completed my first volunteer project, with the Leatherback Trust. Just enjoyed a steak dinner and beers with some of the gang. Thought this was going to be a boring blog BUT lots of cool things happened so bit longer than usual. Before my normal boring updates I need to share one two three amazing experiences I have had these last 2 weeks! First amazing event, I was on a night patrol with Adam and Alex, It was a moonless dark night and we had walked the beach twice, on our second break at the northern end of the beach we were chatting when ... read more

Pura Vida Just a short blog of my mini break from camp. 5 nights in a Best Western in Liberia. Claudia dropped me off in La Guardia from the camp, then public bus into Liberia, had to stand all the way, 30 mins, as the bus was full. The driver kept sorting his change out as we were driving so little bit scary lol. Checked in and first stop hot shower then down shops to pick up some flora de cana, rum. Also bought myself a new phone so may be able to message when back at camp. Also bought the camp some gifts! Tea towels and some clothes pegs lol we needed both. Booked a day trip to Vida adventure park which was an hour drive then seven zip lines, hour horse riding and a ... read more

Buenas dias chicos pura vida! Updates ref turtles, On a wet morning patrol at 0500 Adam and I spotted a Ridley turtle which we thought was dead as on its side but when we got closer we could see her pulse in her neck so we flipped her over and she was ok and waddled back to the sea, so worth the rainy walk to save a life :o) Annoyed did not have my camera with me doh! We have been seeing more turtles each night, as many as 4 a night totalling approx 19 loras (Oliver Ridley) and 3 Negras (East Pacific green turtle) have been seen this season, sometimes they abort or we only see tracks. Peak nesting is usually Nov to Jan. We are relocating all nests as the storm has meant hight ... read more

Hola! Made it safely to Liberia and picked up by Javi the project lead at Cabuyal Leatherback project, he is from Southern Spain. We stopped for some food and a beer before driving 40 mins to the camp, the last leg of the journey included an unsurfaced road, a river crossing and the final section a muddy trail to the camp entrance, only reachable by 4 x 4. Four other people already at the camp, Emma (volunteer) from Seattle, Claudia (Turtle research assistant) from Mexico, Adam from California and Kelsey from Ohio, both the latter completing their theses for their Biology Masters serving as research assistants. Emma heads off similar time to me in early Dec and the others are all here until March! There is a larger Leatherback project a couple of hours away on ... read more

Buenas Dias, NB you have to scroll down for other photos as the blog software spaces based on text...... I did not expect to write a blog so soon, however a lot happened already in first few days and have some spare time and internet! Flight from UK went reasonably smoothly, lucky me and my knee had an emergency exit seat so more than enough leg room. Took off an hour late and 11 hours later when arriving at San Jose we had to circle for an hour due to some low storm clouds, which resulted in a bumpy landing, had worse. Wish I had some of the magic potion that Dawn Tottle put on my leg.... Checked into hotel near airport for the night then taxi to Dennys at 0515 to meet my shuttle to ... read more

Hi all, so this is my last blog, 41st one, bit spooky as same number of years I have been kicking around on this planet! Blogs total around 45,000 words and 1000 pickies! Can vividly remember writing my first one back in January in Miami! Writing this one the day before I fly home from Cairns, via Brisbane and Singapore, 24 hours in the sky plus few hours at airports! Finishing and publishing at Esmes house. So last few weeks of my travels, or in my case last few weeks chilling in the sun! Arrived at Cairns airport at silly oclock in the morning, 0410 to be precise! Caught a bus to the hostel, Northern Greenhouse, three of us got off the bus and the guy on reception let us crash in the tv room as ... read more

G 'day all, Just a short blog as I am finally leaving Baldivis, time for a holiday break! lol Leaving here tomorrow evening to catch the train into Perth (Peggy catching with me), then the bus to the airport for my overnight flight to Cairns, arriving around 4 in the morning! The last few weeks I have been basically doing same as last blog, working outside or inside the house doing jobs then stopping mid afternoon for a beer in the sun and maybe a dip in the pool! Fixed the indoor spa which was leaking, well fixed the leak then the pump would not work! So fixed the pump too! Had to fix Andis repair to the wooden pool fence (he put a screw into irrigation pipe!), we also spent the morning digging out some ... read more

G'day all, added another map to show latest travel since two blogs ago and includes route to next destination Cairns. Decided to stay in Baldivis with Tania, Peggy and Andi as enjoying doing odd jobs, enjoying the sunshine and a cheap life!lol. Plan to get a direct flight to Cairns to spend my last two weeks holidaying in Cairns, enjoying the beach, snorkling the barrier reef and trekking in surrounding forests, before my long journey home to blighty. So what else has been happening here in Baldivis? Well we finally finished the painting, painting an area of around 200 square metres, yes I am sad and I measured it to calculate the paint covereage, every individual beam size!lol Well we needed to know to make sure we bought the right amount of paint and yes I ... read more

G'day all, hope you all well. Mary, Dennis and Ant dropped me off in Darwin City centre where I would be staying for a couple of days, a rest after working hard for two weeks! Left my backpack in the hostel storeage as can not check in until one and yes you have guessed it went for a wander around Darwin. It was only nine in the morning and it was already really hot getting into the thirties at midday. First visit was a macdonalds Mcmuffin and a coffee and some free wifi before walking through town and down to the harbour waterfront. The harbour or wharf area has lots of new buildings mainly residential flats , restaraunts, wave pool and a sandy cove for safe swimming away from jellyfish, sharks and crocs. I visited some ... read more
