So True The dang language barrier...it is so easy to want to be annoyed when people can't understand you, but I completely agree. I cannot (should not) be frustrated that they cannot communicate with me in their native tongue in their own country but that small tease of English that often trickles out just sends me running down a path of hopeful understanding...that unfortunately leads to a lot of sighing smiles of defeat, korp kun ka, and walking away. Better luck next time. Oh cultural immersion...
Great looking Thanksgiving! I think your Thanksgiving looks lovely! Wow - you are brave cooking all of that with nothing resembling a kitchen! Kudos to you! It brought back the delicious Thai and Nigerian meals you made here - yum!
Thanksgiving Feast Laurie, I am really impressed with what you did for Thanksgiving. Your verbal description was great but seeing the pictures and reading your blog really expanded upon it. Congratulations!
BurgerVirgins.com Your Thanksgiving feast sounds like it was delightful! Speaking of food, I just saw a ridiculous Burger King commercial featuring 'Chiang Mai villagers' - traditionally dressed Thai people/actors performing a "pure taste test", the results of which can be viewed at burgervirgins.com - WTF. The ignorance of it all.
red can laurasia- in my house, oceanspray cranberry sauce is lovingly known as "red can." it is an absolute thanksgiving must have. a few years ago, my mom and my aunt tried to introduce "real cranberry sauce." it crashed and burned and caused all kinds of problems-- including an emergency run to Giant. since then, red and all its glorious ridges are a staple at our table. i think we would even shell out $12 for it. hope the meal you make lives up to the one in your dreams. vinny
Jim Thompson's Ghost There was a lot of talk about Jim Thompson's ghost in Tana Rata, the town in the Cameron Highlands where he had his holiday home -- having hiked in the jungle around where he disappeared, I can see how people can vanish without a trace, but some people still think he faked his death - the mystery of it all!
Sounds like these kids below in the Spice Girls or something with their names! But they are so adorable so I can't make too much fun. Like the yellow shirt!
cool names Grape is one of my favorite kids, actually, as well as being one of my favorite juices. Are you happy to be done with teaching or are you missing it??
