Habitat That

In 2008 I stumbled across a message board post, looking for people interested in an opportunity to volunteer with Thrivent Financial/Habitat for Humanity in Poland. I contacted Terri with Thrivent on a whim, and six months later I found myself flying across the ocean with a team of strangers who quickly became family. And then I was hooked. I went back to Poland in 2009 with Terri and Chuck (who are without a doubt the most phenomenal team leaders in.the.world), and now am fortunate to be traveling with them again to Hungary.

If you'd like to read the team travel blogs from my 2008 and 2009 trip, you can find them here:

People ask why I decided to volunteer with Habitat overseas. I get comments such as "You know, there are people in America who need help too". And that's true. I do get the opportunity to travel to a place that most likely I wouldn't have had on my vacation list, so perhaps there is a selfish element to it. But people in need are the same in any culture, and once you see the impact even a week can have on a family, then I am perfectly okay with being selfish 😊

I hope that this is one of many more trips to come!

Today the adventure begins! My 1st flight leaves from Columbia SC into DC, and then from there I cross into tomorrow and land in Brussels (Belgium), and then onto Budapest Hungary. I have a six hour layover in DC, as United Airlines is notorious for having trouble with flights to and from Columbia. I'm looking forward to seeing Chuck and Terri tomorrow, and for the week ahead!... read more
