A wonderful day. We ‘achieved’ all that we set out to do … negotiated the early morning traffic to hit the motorway to Falkirk to experience ‘the wheel’ first-hand. The Falkirk Wheel is a rotating boat lift the only one of its kind in the world and raises boats by 24 metres to connect the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal. We were told by the very informative crew member as we were raised into the air that the caissons or gondolas always carry a combined weight of 500 tonnes of water and boats, with the gondolas themselves each weighing 50 tonnes. Care is taken to maintain the water levels on each side, thus balancing the weight on each arm. As you all know, Archimedes’ principle says that floating objects displace their own weight ... read more

Good decision making today. Caught the early (10am) ferry from Craignure to Oban. This gave us time to stop for a leisurely lunch in Luss, beside Loch Lomond, before heading onto Glasgow, arriving mid-afternoon, hence missing the heavy peak hour traffic. Time to relax and unwind.... read more

Nothing unusual … the day began early. Cereal for breakfast and we were on the road headed for Fionnphort to catch our boat trip to Staffa Island … so we thought. The drive was slow due to the narrowness, blind corners and summits and windy nature of the road. The mist, low cloud and occasional drizzle added to our carefulness. The animal sights along the way contributed to our enjoyment. At Fionnphort we were advised that there was no guarantee that we would be stepping onto Staffa due to the Atlantic swell. Disembarking would be too dangerous. The sea out of the protected harbour was up and the wooden ‘brown boat’ would be rolling making those who were prone to sea sickness quite sick. It was approximately an hour out, an hour on Staffa (if able) ... read more

We had no trouble setting off from Gourock at 6.50am for our destination, Oban, and the ferry to the Isle of Mull, as we wished to miss the heavy workday traffic as it headed into Glasgow. Once we had crossed the Erskine Bridge it was full steam ahead … well, slow steam ahead for us, as every vehicle on the road continually roared past us. Following the shore of Loch Lomond, we continually pulled in to either walk its shore, visit the very small villages such as the beautiful Luss or small track walks into the forest to view places of interest such as waterfalls, gravesites, and remnants of a bygone era. The road was windy with no shoulders, so care was continually taken … certainly by us as the car was generously loaned to us ... read more

An uneventful but comfortable drive to Gourock on the banks of the River Clyde in the Inverclyde district of Scotland had us arriving mid-afternoon. Our room for the 3 nights above the Spinnaker Hotel was small, clean, cosy and quiet. The name Gourock comes from the Gaelic word for “pimple”, in reference to the hill above the town. Due to a communication breakdown with regard to boating we substituted it with exploring the coast from Gourock to Inverkip onto Wemyss Bay, Largs and Androssan before heading into the countryside to Dalry and Kilbirnie. The lushness and undulating landforms added to the joy of our drive which was interspersed with occasional short walks to viewing points or tracks that looked inviting. We were not ‘down-in-the-dumps’ with regard to the overcast weather on the first day as we ... read more

A tiring flight ended at Manchester Airport with the welcoming and smiling faces of Rob and Mary. A quick dash down the M56 to Caldy on the Wirral overlooking the River Dee with North Wales off in the distance. We spent the days of comfort in conversation, short walks and just plain old fashion well needed relaxation in a very welcoming home.... read more

An efficient few hours, saw us clean the motorhome in and out, that the company received the van in a cleaner state than what was received … which wasn’t that bad. Before returning it we travelled to Titahi Bay and walked the path along the cliff face. Timely, as the fire department from the local town brigade were doing mock rescues on the same cliffs. We struck up conversation with them and recalled the very unfortunate deaths of the two firemen on the first night of the cyclone at Muriwai, the place we first visited with the van. The return of the motorhome was without drama and we were complimentary shuttled to our accommodation at “Rydges Wellington Airport”. We were able to check-in 3 hours early as our booked room was available. Repacking of the case ... read more

We took the bus into Wellington Central early, watching Wellingtonians ‘go to work’. As it was well before opening time for the Te Papa Museum, we scurried about visiting areas we had not seen before. The wind was picking up! Even though we tried to do the museum justice by spending 3 hours learning, thoroughly enjoying and being ‘moved’ by the fascinating displays and information we knew we still had only scratched the surface. Te Papa is full of the treasures and unique stories of Aotearoa New Zealand from Maori and Pacific culture, to art and the natural environment. Level 3, Blood Earth Fire, was my favourite. We began at level 6 and worked our way to level 3, with 2 and 1 still to go, however, we were out-on-our-feet. When Jane said she was tired, ... read more

We ventured into the heart of NZ’s capital, Wellington, by bus. Also known as, '“Windy Welly” or “Wellywood”! The nickname Windy Welly comes very simply from Wellington being very windy. Today was not so. Wellington lies on a point of land sticking out into the Cook Strait. The Roaring 40’s, strong westerly winds found below 40 degrees latitude on the Southern Hemisphere, push through the Cook Strait even stronger, making Wellington extremely windy. The nickname Wellywood comes from the massive film production business that was established in Wellington by Peter Jackson for the Lord of the Rings. Our NZ friends had mentioned to us that Wellington is a buzzing city with lots to do and see, with great food culture, and generally just one of the nicest cities in NZ’s North ... read more

An absolutely beautiful, pleasant, discovering day. The weather was terrific. We began by wandering the Waikanae Beach, making comments that the driftwood, shells and volcanic stones would be an artisans mecca. The weathering by sea and sand of the pieces of driftwood and stones into all sorts of shapes and smoothness had us wanting to take many pieces home but knew that was not possible. We were present when the local ferry ‘berthed’ (see photos). Birdlife was prolific. Kapiti Island is 5km across the Rauoterangi Channel and is a popular destination for many. Waikanae, meaning ‘waters of the grey mullet’ is also home to numerous walking, running, cycling and horse trails. The Tararua Ranges which we white knuckled experienced yesterday look over Waikanae and the Kapiti Coast. Tripping further south we came across, Paraparaumu. Its beach, ... read more
