Thursday, May 27th 2010 This is the beginning of a new adventure: Central America. I got the idea with Hubert a few months back, when we decided to go somewhere different than United States, where we spend the most of our time. I recall Hubert saying something like "we could go to Guatemala" and the whole idea grew from there. Our plan is actually quite sophisticated: we are flying to Cancun, Mexico (with a stopover in San Salvador) and we are flying back from San Salvador. Actually I am not using my return flight and I'm going to Nuremberg for business right after the end of this trip (the company bought me a flight from San Salvador). After that, I am even visiting my family in Venice! So this promises to be a very eventful vacation. ... read more

The Japan experience

April 2nd 2010

Friday, April 2nd 2010 Today is the day I have been waiting forever: I finally go to Japan! I am at the San Francisco airport right now. It's 11.30am, my flight is going to be at 1.05pm. I really did not plan this vacation as much as I wanted and omitted many details. Only yesterday I went to Bank of America to change some dollars in Japanese Yen (I have 89,000 yen in my pocket, whatever that means). I bought a tour book which I hardly read, but I am planning to read it while in Japan. And I did not brush up my Japanese, which would have been pretty handy going there, sob. I didn't ask anybody to join me in this trip; Japan is so special to me that I want to visit ... read more

January 3rd 2010

Istanbul, December 28th 2009 - January 1st 2010 I believe it was September when we first started talking about Istanbul as a possible destination for celebrating 2010. The idea came from an on-board magazine I read during a flight a few months before. The article said something like "Istanbul, the city between two continents". Honestly, I thought Turkey was entirely in Europe, but I guess learning is a never-ending process. Gathering people for this adventure has been a little more difficult than before and - at the end - I was with "the usual suspects": Seba and Gillo, with whom I spent the majority of the year endings of my adult life. I knew Istanbul, with its Muslim background, would not be the typical European city in terms of night life and entertainment and stated ... read more

Thursday, June 18th 2009 This trip to Alaska was born at Red Rock Cafe in Mountain View, when I was talking to my friends K and S one evening not longer than 2 months ago. For the longest time I wanted to visit the northernmost United State and... here I am! I have a lot of hope in this trip and I know this is not going to disappoint me. The difference between this travelblog and all the past ones is that I'm writing this one live and right now, at 9.49pm, I am on an airplane to Anchorage. For the very first time in my life we were able to get a deal from the air company (Alaska airlines); we were supposed to fly to Seattle and then Anchorage and instead we got a direct ... read more

One of the great benefits of my new job is to have every second Friday off; last Memorial Day weekend, for me, was a 4-day one and I did my best to make good use of it. Recently I have not been riding my motorcycle as much as I wanted, so I decided to catch up and drive my "usual" long distance over these 4 days. In order to buy some time, I left Thursday, May 21st after work. I describe day by day what happened; if you are only interested about the trip nitty-gritty details and not the story, you can see the map and go to the last sections, which are merely informative. Map (captured with the GPS) Thursday, May 21st Maybe because I'm on a budget, maybe because I felt more adventurous than ... read more

I could have titled this post as "Ciccio in California" or... "Finally Ciccio made it to California". The story starts pretty back in time, more exactly in 2003. That hot July I decided to move to America and I was on my way to San Jose on the 15th. Just a few weeks later I drove my run-down Lexus (bought for a few dollars) at the San Jose airport waiting for Claudio (aka Gillo) who - dramatically - never arrived. I called him home the following day (after an interminable wait at the luggage claim) and discovered he was not admitted in the US because of a border patrol at New York airport. This sad story had a long follow-up, but it's not certainly my goal to disclose how badly Gillo took the whole situation, especially ... read more

August 16th 2008

Lost Coast (Aug, 16th 2008) Map (captured with the GPS) Once again I was on the road with Davide. And once again it was because his beloved was far away... At any rate, the perfect organization of this trip surprised even myself... We left Friday after work with destination Ukiah after abundant shopping at Trader Joe's (the food was enough for an army). We were lucky enough not to find any traffic on the road and - if you live in the bay area - you probably know how unforgiving 101 can be on Friday. Crossed the Golden Gate we were on our way to the North. I guess that was the first time I drove Davide's jeep (last trip to Death Valley he was the only driver... and maybe it was a good idea...). Ukiah ... read more

There are so many details I want to capture about this trip that I'll probably end up writing too much... bear with me... This was really an interesting trip and I faced it differently than from the past ones. I divided this incredible 3,200-mile journey day by day for easy reference. Let's start... Map of the trip Saturday, June 6th 2008: Mountain View (California) to Lee Vining (California) Mountain View, Central, Montague, Fremont, CA 238, Sunol, Foothill, Plesanton, Livermore, Tesla Rd, Tracy, CA 120 (236 miles, 378 Km) So, let's start with order. First of all I must say the planning of this trip has been head and shoulders above the previous adventure to Colorado. Although I am not a big fun of Google (I hate monopoly) I realized one of the best tools on the ... read more

May 20th 2008

Map May, 24th 2008 - May, 26th 2008 One of the very few Holidays in the US is the Memorial Day, a yearly event to remember soldiers fallen in war. I guess this is meant to be a day spent with the family, but I don't have any family member here... so I decided to go on a road trip... Recently I have been into hiking more than ever and I was seriously considering about going somewhere in the Sierras and cover a few miles of forests using some of the new equipment I bought. Then I thought I am really neglecting the motorcycle and I was once again attracted by a long road-trip. Destination Nevada. Till the very day before the departure I was resolved of going to Klamath Falls, Oregon, but I am glad ... read more

New Year's day in Ljubljana

January 19th 2008

It happens every year. In the last half of November all the old friends keep in touch and decide where to spend New Year's day. The tradition of going somewhere abroad has been going on for a while now and it all started in 1999 when we went to Prague. This year was doomed by indecision: someone wanted to go back to Spain, after the great experience of last year in Madrid. Others were opting for somewhere closer, since everybody was lacking time and I was the only one on a long vacation. Umberto had this brilliant idea: Ljubljana, the capital of neighbor Slovenia. Unfortunately only three of us made it there: myself, Umberto (Umbe) and omnipresent Claudio (Gillo). Getting there from Venice is really a piece of cake: about two and a half hours driving. ... read more
