Incase you didn’t read to the end of the last entry (which is completely understandable, as it is quite long), I just wanted to make sure everyone knows they are invited to the open house/welcome-home party my parents are throwing for Shane and I: What: Open House/Welcome-Home Party (I’ll have out all my pictures, souvenirs, fabric, etc. for those who care to see) Where: My house (message me if you need directions) When: Saturday, June 21st Time: It starts around 4:00pm, but it’s an open house so feel free to come and go as you please until who knows when! Goodbye Africa.

Africa » Ghana » Greater Accra » Legon
Well this is it. My last blog entry… which means alas, that this incredible, surreal stay in Africa has come to an end. Since my last blog I have experienced some incredible things. My parents came to visit- their stay consisted of another trip out to Cape Coast slave trade castle, Kakum canopy walk, Cape Coast Beach, the African art museum, flight up north to Mole National Park, an incredible stay in the reserve in which monkeys jumped on top of and around the breakfast tables while people were eating, wild warthogs sleeping under the trees right outside our room, elephant [View Full Entry]

So, as you probably know, my parents came to visit a few weeks ago. Since they've been home, my mom wrote down a few thoughts she wanted to share, so I let her post them here on my blog. I plan to post a blog of my own soon, it's just been a little hectic lately studying for finals... well that... and just being lazy lol. alright well i hope all is well with everyone back in the States! love and miss you all! =p Mom's thoughts: Okay, we are back from our visit to Ghana and I have a few [View Full Entry]

Once again I have gone forever without updating, and once again I am vowing to not do this to myself again! my excuse for not writing originally was because I hadn’t been around the university for what seemed like weeks, and when I was there I was either completely exhausted and/or really sick. It has taken me about 2-3 weeks of a little bit at a time to complete this massive blog. Overview of the events of the past month and a half Thurs. March 13th - This day was an intense preparation day, first in finding a bus/tro-tro station that [View Full Entry]

Sunday morning we got to sleep in a little and savor our last few moments of air conditioning and huuuge beds. In the early afternoon we went to a beach resort to spend some time in the ocean before heading back to school. I couldn’t help but think of all those loved ones back in the States, on this sunny, 95 degree day of March 5th… o wait, it’s March. It’s cold where you are, and probably snowing. bummer. lol :-P Anyhow, there were boogie boards at this beach, and the waves were quite strong so instead of jumping them, we [View Full Entry]

Fri. February 29th-Sun. March 2nd: Group trip to Cape Coast Our first group trip paid for by our dues to SUNY was to Cape Coast, which is about an hour or two outside of Legon. Mercy picked us up at 8:30am and we piled all our stuff on to the top of the van. The drive there was really different scenery. For about a third of the drive, the road was bordered by villages of huts made of mud. The walls were completely mud, like they were one with the ground, coming right up out of the dirt. It was exactly [View Full Entry]

I know I know it’s been such a long time since I’ve updated. Things have been crazy busy here for various reasons… as you will see, if you keep reading. (Bear with me as this entry will probably be long because it’s been over two weeks since my last update. I apologize if it is not always interesting but I am also using this blog for my own use to remember all the things I do here.) This entry is quite long and I've had it written for a few days now, but the internet won't stay stable long enough to [View Full Entry]

Yesterday was our first organized trip through SUNY, which essentially means that Mercy takes us on a planned schedule of events and everything has been paid for in advance through our fees we paid to come here. Yesterday’s outing was just a short one, that didn’t start until 1:30pm when Mercy picked us up in a van (going somewhere in the van always feels like an extreme luxury because you don’t need to worry about finding a tro-tro home, negotiating a good price for a taxi, or worrying about walking from the main gate to the ISH on the opposite side [View Full Entry]

Our trip to the beach on Saturday was very nice and relaxing. Shane and I wanted to get out to the beach early that day, but we needed to get some cash first, which one would expect to take only the smallest amount of time considering there is a bank barely 200 yards from the ISH… but that’s not how it works here. lol The bank starts letting people in the bank at 9am, but doesn’t “open” until 9:30am (and I use the word “open” loosely because I have yet to actually see this be true.) We got there around 9:20, [View Full Entry]

Sorry I haven’t updated for a bit, we’ve been so busy with our orientation that when there is spare time, taking a nap always trumps blog writing. In the past few days we’ve gone to so many crazy places. The orientation is so wonderful with teaching us how to live and be self-sufficient in this culture rather than supplying everything to us so that we are able to do it on our own. When we first came, all of our meals were at the orientation director’s home, which is actually right on campus as are all university employee homes. Then she [View Full Entry]
