Wednesday 17 February Back on the road again! Or more appropriately in the Air, leaving Kanchanaburi with our taxi driver Mr Nong and his charming daughter Ah Mi we drive the three hour journey to Suvarnabhumi airport via the centre of a hot and very polluted Bangkok, en route, we get to go over King Rama VIII bridge, which we had previously sailed under by water ferry boat. Flying Bangkok airlines for the first time we are surprised to be allocated extra legroom exit seats and be served a full airline meal on our short 45 minute flight, coupled with free entrance to their airport lounge where we are offered complimentary soft drinks/ teas/ coffees and pastries and western-style finger food, the day was going well. Only blight on the horizon, Leo reads in today's Bangkok ... read more

Tuesday 16 February Today we have a plan. As we cannot walk or hike very far, due to aforementioned heat/humidity levels, we will walk the 25 minutes to Kanchanaburi Railway Station to catch the 10.30am tourist train across the River Kwai, and onto Nam Tok, it's final destination, taking over two hours each way. The fare is either bht100 (£2) or special class tourist price bht300 (do the math), which includes a cushion to sit on, coffee, iced water, cheesy biscuit AND a jammy sponge cake, not to mention copious cups of iced Coca Cola and chilled hand wipes - AND a certificate to say we travelled on the train! So, we splashed out and travelled in style. Having visited the official museum yesterday, we really did sense the enormity of this railway. It was an ... read more

Monday 15 February Woke early, neither slept well but both feeling good. Had average breakfast then sat outside on our verandah, chatting to pleasant English neighbours who were due to travel onwards to Bangkok after 5 days in the area, as we see so often out here they explained that they are also Ex Pats living on the coast at Kusadasi, Turkey, near Izmir for over 8 years. Swapped tales and ideas, which made us realise our 4 night stay here might be over ambitious. Our neighbours seemed to indicate that two or three days were ample to cover the sights here, bearing in mind the humidity. Our own realisation is that all but short strolls are a struggle, and our anticipated National Park Trekking a No No! So, we set off after an average and ... read more

Sunday 14 February Change of plans this morning. A dodgy meal somewhere renders Leo incapable of travelling first thing, we find out there is a later 1400 train which allows Leo to see out the problem. Paula having nothing better to do while Leo suffers, sits on the balcony with a mug of tea, times the regularity of the Orange flag express boats. Concluding that our last check out is 1200 hrs allowing us 17 minutes to walk the short journey to the Marine Jetty (N4 on the map of the river). As a bonus, because it's a later boat we have space for us and our bulky luggage. Our previous evening's reccee pays off, as we position ourselves in the right spot and side for the precarious disembarkation at Jetty N11, leaving us plenty of ... read more

Saturday 13 February Today is a travelling day. Just hoping we manage to arrive in Bangkok with both of our packs. Check- in and bag drop went smoothly and we enjoy a chicken biryani on our short flight to Bangkok. Paula has arranged a cab with the Hotel (River View), as they are in a difficult to find location. Just as well, the City as usual, is grid locked and the Hotel is down some of the narrowest back alleyways we have been through. Lined with used car parts, rusty axles and crankshafts, recognising a few bits. The hotel, as usual, chosen for it's quirkiness, our pre-booked room high up on the 7th floor with great views of the river and our own river side balcony. No expense spared we have paid for deluxe with river ... read more

Friday 12 February We rise earlier than intended this morning as the Hotel is full of very noisy Chinese, who believe the only form of communication is to shout instead of talking. After breakfast, we decide to take a river cruise, choosing to go via the Old Town and along the river to the jetty, via the post office to send some postcards (we are really starting to know our way around by day 5). En route we pass another Wat which is old and beautiful, however, the atmosphere and serenity is a little dampened by the Wat's specially added feature, displaying a life size model of Donald Duck amongst the religious Icons - only in Thailand, of course. Paula decides we will cross the river Ping and walk along the quiet bank towards the ferry ... read more

Thursday 11 February Today started badly. We go down to breakfast to find our noisy rude Chinese have been replaced by an equally obnoxious bunch so we breakfast quickly and return to our room to plan the day. As we are going South from here on Saturday we are unlikely to do any more trekking or require warm clothing, so we parcel up the lot and ship it back Air parcel post, a full 6 kilos. This means we can now visit the Markets and replenish our summer clothing and look for mementoes. Well, It had to be done - in all the time we have been in the Far East we have generally been able to avoid visiting the Wats, but as Chiang Mai is renowned for them we give into our cultural conscience and ... read more

Wednesday 10 February Every one here in Thailand is very respectful and we are greeted with clasped hands prayer-like to the face and either 'hello' or 'thank you very much' in Thai, wherever we go, village or city. There is a male and female form, unfortunately the pronunciation of both is very difficult to Western tongues, Paula decided it was easier to mumble it behind raised hands saying either Cardboard Car (female) and Cardboard Crap (male) and so far it seems to work. Given time She could bring a complete 'Stanley Unwinism' to the Thai language! (Yes, Paula had to google Stanley Unwin to understand this statement) Following Alf's careful directions, we make our way to........... Boots the chemist at the East Gate of the city. Same, same - from blue plastic shopping baskets to familiar ... read more

Tuesday 9 February Another early start today, Alf had organised a trek circumnavigating the forest of Doi InthanonThailand's highest mountain, within a national park created around it. Our trip includes a driver, minibus,an English-speaking guide named Pear and the 6 of us old veteran Phoenix walkers. The journey takes one and a half hours and we drive to the summit, our first stop being a viewing platform. Unfortunately, what should have been spectacular views is a little spoilt by the misty conditions. After a few photographs and a visit to a shrine on the very highest point (including a quick visit to the highest loo in Thailand) we drive on, descending to the Rangers station where we meet our guide for the trek. We are told the walk is circular with a few ups and downs ... read more
