Sunday (Part 2) I forgot to mention in our last blog, but Mandy would be busy crocheting while Steve was driving across the desert, I am really not sure how as I could not do anything while we bobbed around, anyway there was a special presentation for Andy this morning before we left our campsite, Mandy had crocheted Andy a thong (G-string), but I am not sure that he will wear it because it might be a little bit draughty and pink is not really his colour (thanks Mandy). We left Birdsville at around 1.40pm, we are still on South Australia time, there was no point in converting to Queensland time for the brief moment we are there and it was only half hour difference anyway. Although we had intended on having an overnight in Birdsville ... read more

Day 4 Big Red Saturday Even I was out of bed before 7am this morning, it was a beautiful morning and watching day break and sunrise in the desert was just amazing. It had been a fairly warm night, I am glad that we left the canvas flaps open it let some air circulate. By now I am getting used to the swag and feeling very comfortable with it, but that is easy with the flaps open and two doonas to help keep us warm. Andy started the day off for all of us by making pancakes which we had with either Maple or Golden Syrup and cream, delicious and filling but wondering if it was not going to be the best meal to sit on our stomachs when we hit those undulating tracks over the ... read more

Day 3 - Crossing the Simpson The Tri State Expedition It was definitely a cold night, you could feel the dampness on the canvas inside the swag. When we emerged from our cosy little cell, we could see the frost cast across some of our belongings. The sun was well on its way to being up and there is not a cloud in the sky. Although we did not want to appear unsociable, as soon as we were out of bed we got breakfast on the go and started to break camp, as everyone wanted to get out on the tracks slightly earlier than yesterday. We have a lot of mileage to cover before we can get out of the desert and because of the sand and track conditions the going can be pretty slow, so ... read more

You will have to forgive me for being a little bit brief on this blog, as most of you know I do try and write the blog while Andy is driving and now we are in the desert this is hard to accomplish so I probably have not written as much as I normally would and will try to describe as much as I can. We woke up in the Simpson Desert, which was fortunate as that is where we went to sleep last night. It was a great feeling, Andy peeled back the canvas on his side and we watched the sun come up over the dune, it was just after 7am when we got out of bed to get the kettle on. I cannot tell you how well I slept, especially after last night ... read more

Crossing the Simpson Desert - Day 1 Wow, here it is, the morning has arrived and we were up early to get Gypsy packed up and taken around to her temporary home so that we can cross the Simpson Desert and on to Birdsville, Andy even has the awning down before I have emerged. By 9am we are parking Gypsy up near the Rangers Station and head straight back to camp to hook up with the guys that we met yesterday when I was asking for a favour from them. There are 3 vehicles in the group and for today we will be ringers and make up the group of 4, they are calling themselves the Mud Crabs, we cannot be Mud Crabs, so they called us Blue Ring Octopus and that is the call sign ... read more

Moonlight Bubbles Waking up at Dalhousie, I peeled back my curtain to watch the sunrise over the scrub, it was a cool morning but it felt quite easy to get up. We had spent some time considering our next move, do we do the Simpson Desert or don't we? This is an opportunity that unexpectedly presented itself and perhaps it is one that we needed to take full advantage of, after all we are virtually sat on the edge of the desert and it would be a shame not to do it while we are so close. Knowing that we would be on our own, this was a big factor for us, but equally we know that there is a fair amount of traffic on this route at the moment and if we had any problems ... read more

Arkaringa - Oodnadatta - North Creek - Oodnadatta - Dalhousie It was a little bit disappointing to wake up this morning at Arkaringa and realise that it was still very windy, it is getting a bit tiresome now and would very much like to get out of it. We had already decided to move on, but we know that wherever we go today, we are unlikely to lose this wind. It was just before 10am when we left Arkaringa, we saw Wei on the way out, but there was no sign of Lauren, well it is Sunday and I guess she is taking the opportunity for a lie in, I don't blame her. Today our drive takes us through the Painted Desert and toward Oodnadatta, I believe that the next 50k's of track takes us through ... read more

Friday 19 July Coober Pedy - Arckaringa & The Painted Desert So today we make our way out of Coober Pedy, an unusual little town with much hidden wealth, I didn't find my precious stone, but then it is like looking for a needle in a haystack, I would stand a better chance if I could dig a 20 foot deep hole though, even though Andy would have happily obliged, and no one would say anything as you are allowed to dig/noodle in the mullock to your hearts content. I forgot to mention a couple of days ago, we were told by one of the locals that young people do not seem interested in mining for Opal, that gave me a little bit of thought, if the miners become less and less then Opal will stay ... read more

Hi every one, Before you dive in to our latest blog, we just thought we would mention that this one is our 700th Blog entry. I know you will say, so what,! you just write them and we just read them, but 700 entries, we have made. We worked out last night that based on a 40 hour week and each blog taking about 4 hours to produce, equates to 1.35 years of blogging, now that is amazing. Our first blog entries were made on the 30th September 2008, we initially were going to go with AOL for the blog and had published the first five entries on their site when they notified us and advised they were shutting their site down within thirty days, so we needed to go with a new blog provider and ... read more

The Best Monday Morning ever Oodnadatta Track With Van Morrison on the iPod we are whistling our way up the Oodnadatta track, a Monday morning like this is the best Monday morning ever. The sun is shining, the temperature is currently about 16 degrees and the traffic is light, no sign of gridlock anywhere, we have seen about 4 vehicles! We were on our toes this morning a quick breakfast not much to pack away and we were driving out of Muloorina Station by 8.45, we left our camping fees in the honesty box, made a donation to the RFDS and we even spotted a dingo on the way out of the station. There is a dog fence that comes around the edge of this property and we pondered which side of the fence wild dogs/dingos ... read more
