My last night in Europe was spent in a swanky suite in the Raddison Blu Hotel in Brussels, which Dom and I got for a steal with Europe's cheap Sunday night accommodation rates that allows us to live like Kings - even if it was just for a short time! Unfortunately, we didn't enjoy much of it - we just slept, and slept, and slept. We had been at Spa for the past day and night, after all! We took the journey to Belgium by car on Saturday morning for the Spa 24 Hours, taking the underwater EuroTunnel (the underwater Interislander, I like to think) and arriving at Spa Francorchamps just in time for the British Formula 3 race that preceded the main event itself in the late afternoon. For those of you who've been to ... read more

Dom and I were today destined for Spa-Francorchamps for the epic 24 Hour endurance race. While our plans have slightly changed and we're instead heading off in the early hours of Saturday morning (for a lunchtime arrival, with the race starting at 04:00pm), the excitement to see the famous circuit in the flesh hasn't. I've also been told by many, many people of the need to sample to iconic Belgian waffles and local beer while I'm there. I've had a solid week of fitness training, so why not! I hope to catch up with Stephane Ortelli - who is competing in a Porsche RSR at the race - who I haven't seen since 1996 when we lived together in the UK for a few months. My sister Chelsea and I (despite being 3 and 6 respectively) ... read more

It sure has been a busy couple of days here in the UK! Since my last entry, Dominic and I joined A1GP Team New Zealand driver Earl Bamber in catching up with Colin Giltrap and a number of influential businessman at a casual evening in London on Monday night. This gave me a great opportunity to mix with friendly, but powerful people, and more importantly the 'casual' aspect allowed me to feel relaxed and comfortable in the setting and really make some headway in preparation for next year. As a result, a number of meetings, invites to private functions and introductions to more like-minded business people have been offered and taken up. Ahhh, the power of networking! It was also great to catch up with Earl, who I haven't seen since the start of the year ... read more

Three weeks ago I left New Zealand on a tour of Europe to pursue the next step in my motor racing career. It's gone by in a flash, and now I'm just a week from boarding the big silver bird to make the return journey, but there's still a whole lot to look forward to in the coming week! Dom and I have spent the last three days at Donington where he had his debut in British Formula 3 - an extremely tough championship - and with his family all eagerly awaiting updated back in NZ, I took a new role for the weekend - photographer. Armed with the wicked Sony camera Dean Cockerton lent me for my trip, I explored every possible angle of the Donington National Circuit and snapped away as Dom tested, qualified ... read more

I've made it to London in one piece, taking the Eurostair train through the Chunnel underneath the ocean and into England on Monday evening. It was a bit of a let down to be honest. I had myself so excited about going in an underwater train (that's the reason I didn't fly in the first place) and wasn't really aware that I'd just be in a dark tunnel for 15 minutes and emerge in another country! Even so, it was nice to see a kiwi face waiting for me when I got out of Customs. I'm staying with Dominic Storey - a fellow kiwi, good friend and driver from back home who is living up here in Milton Keynes competing in single seaters this year. This place is great. Not only is it motorsport central (Brendon ... read more

At this time of year, Europe enjoys its Summer months. But the Hungaroring preferred to keep thing Arctic for my brief but exciting visit. I departed Faistenau and the rest of Austria at 04:00am on Thursday morning in a minivan with the team, for the 800kmjourney to the historic Nurburgring for the ninth round of the Formula 1, and of course the latest Porsche Supercup event with Lechner Racing. I knew there would be little else in Europe to rival Fuschl and Austria in general for its beautiful landscape and fresh water lakes, but the constant rain was something I was keen to see the back of. What I wasn’t expecting was Antarctic temperatures in Germany, to accompany yet more patchy rain! Even so, the Nurburgring was amazing. While I wasn’t able to drive the historic ... read more

It's still raining in Salzburg - I'm beginning to wonder whether the sun has permanently shut up shop and shifted elsewhere. Hopefully it's Germany, as that's the next stop on my Europe itinerary tomorrow! I've spent the last couple of days in at the Lechner Racing workshop as the cars have been prepared for the 800km journey into the Motherland. They're leaving in an hour or two; however myself and the rest of the team will be piling into the team minivan tomorrow morning. The last two evenings I've caught up with Josh Hart - an old Formula Vee team mate and fellow Palmerstonian - whose also based near Salzburg where he is competing in the Euro Kart Rotax Challenge. It's been great to see a mate from home, and leave the pigeon-English speaking patterns I’ve ... read more

As I write this I’m feasting on a few snacks I picked up at a small supermarket in Fuschl am See (yep, I’m back in Austria now). As I saddled up on the Lechner Racing Aprilia scooter to take the 4km journey through the windy forest roads to Fuschl from my motel, The Steinbrau, I was quietly excited to sample some of the foods on offer here. Then I realised as I walked in the door of the superette, that I hadn’t a clue what anything was, what was in it, or what it would taste like. It was the same at dinner last night. The entire restaurant menu was in German, and the only English word the waitress could say was ‘cheeseburger’, so that was my only real choice! Good burger though. It’s all part ... read more

..."Let's go racing boys," as NASCAR would say. Since my first blog entry, I've travelled to Hungary for my two days of Porsche Supercup testing with Lechner Racing at the Hungaroring Grand Prix circuit. Yesterday, we embarked on the eight hour road trip to Hungary from Austria, stopping on the way only to attend to a B-train truck that had literally taken a lie down across a six-lane highway and strewn cardboard boxes as far as the eye could see. We arrived at the track late in the evening and the team proceeded to set up while I met the other drivers and marvelled at how Formula BMWs were testing right up until the sun set at 09:00pm. With Europe far less 'PC' than NZ, they don't seem they give a toss about noise limits and ... read more

Thirty five hours of travel and three plane rides later, I’ve made it into Europe. It wasn't without its moments - while the Thair airways flight to Bangkok was bloody good in all aspects, the twelve hours I spent on Lufthansa en route to Frankfurt was like pulling teeth in all facets of the word. Even so, now that I've seen my destination, I realise it's well worth the effort. I was picked up from the airport early this morning by Walter Lechner who was kind enough to spend the morning showing me the sights of the local region and the many comparisons it had to the landscape back home in NZ. I've have settled in to a quaint little room at a local B&B, near the village of Fuschl am See in the mountains of ... read more
