Hey All! Happy Easter!! Man, this is my first Easter away from home...awwww...now I'm sad...but, maybe if I start writing about my trip this weekend I'll feel better...sure that sounds good. Unfortunately, I forgot my camera on this little excursion...yeah...it's a shame too because the country was beautiful. Oh well, guess that means I'll just have to go back...oh darn. Okay, so for this weekend I decided to head east for a short overnight visit to Lome , the capital of Togo. This trip was funny however in the sense that my team roster changed all the way up until [View Full Entry]

Hey All! Got another long one for ya! Grab a snack; you’ll be happy you did… Okay, the gloves are off, the warm-ups are over, and the time for sand bagging has just expired. I have less than forty days to see as much of West Africa as I possibly can…challenge accepted; let the April rush begin!! My first stop? The infamous ivory coast, Cote D’Ivoire! So, when building a team for my first out-of-the-country adventure, I felt that it was important to think about what qualities and abilities would best serve the group as a whole - The ability to [View Full Entry]

Hey All!! Twice in one week?! Yeah, I'm in a generous mood...and I'm kinda backlogged! So I thought I would play catch-up before taking off on another far-flung adventure. So, this past weekend marked my second extended visit to Kumasi, and while the quantity of the itinerary was relatively small it was more than made up for in the high levels of quality! What was the mission this time? Cheer on Ghana's national football team the Black Stars, as they took on Benin in a 2010 World Cup Qualifier Match! While this was once again an independent trip, there were so [View Full Entry]

Plans…who needs them?! That was the moral of the story last time. The moral for this tale? Never give up. Now where was I? Oh yeah, Mole (pronounced Mo-lay). We arrived at the park mid morning Sunday. Needless to say that after thirty hours of traveling, all we wanted to do was sit back and relax. And that was indeed all we did. The Mole Hotel sits on top of a hill overlooking a man-made watering hole; providing the perfect vantage point for viewing the abundant wildlife the park has to offer. The motel also gains high marks in my book [View Full Entry]

Hey All! Sorry for the long delay, the internet here at times can be such a pain! Anyway... with my batteries recharged, it was time for another high flying adventure. And this time I pulled out all the stops. The destinations? Mole National Park, the largest wildlife refuge in country and The Wechiau Community Hippo Sanctuary. The team? Loren, Bethany, Melissa, and myself. This trip was so big; I’ll have to spread it out over three entries. Hope you’re in a reading mood, because this might take a little time. In fact, this is another entry where it wouldn’t be a [View Full Entry]

Hungry? Why Wait!?
Tamale Station

With half of our trip completed we decided to make our way our next destination the Wachiau (pronounced Wa-chow) Community Hippo Sanctuary. Our only problem was figuring out how to get there. Transportation up north is limited at best, so our options were few. We could either hope to catch the bus going to Wa as it passed through Larabanga and maybe get a seat if it wasn’t already full. And then get transport from Wa to Wachiau… or we could catch some other random truck passing through the area and hope that he was going in our direction, and hope [View Full Entry]

Hey All! So to quell any feelings of confusion, disillusion, or cynicism yes I do indeed study…just not that much… well to be fair the structure of the African educational system is not quite as demanding as its American counterpart. Not to say that I’m breezing through my courses by any means, but the methodology of instruction is a tad archaic in the sense that it relies heavily on the lecture system. Generally, classes are held once a week for two hours. Professors are often called lecturers, and rightly so. They talk, we write. Ergo, classroom discussion is limited, [View Full Entry]

Intermission Africa » Ghana
Hey All! Where on earth has the time gone? Here we are. Nine weeks down, and only nine to go. Act 1 is over. Everything is down hill from here… when did that happen!?!? Oh well, life goes on. But hey, if Act one is over that means intermission has begun. But before I touch on that, let’s back track a little since I’ve been kinda negligible with my updating. My last trip in a five weekend series and the act one finale, Green Turtle Lodge. Correction, the magnificent Green Turtle Lodge. A beautiful beach resort that is high in quality [View Full Entry]

The Road to the Volta Region
Caves of Todome
The Road to Afadjato

Hey All! I've adopted a new policy...well, actually it's not really new, I've just finally given word to my strategy while abroad. Weekdays belong to the University, but the weekends belong to Ghana! That being said as soon as I got back from Dreamland, I began to plan my next trip... Yeah, maybe a little eager...just a little. After surveying beaches, I thought it was time to head north. So myself and three others departed for the Volta Region of Ghana, using the town of Hohoe as our adventuring headquarters. We left Accra late Friday afternoon by bus, arriving at the [View Full Entry]
