At last, I finally get to sit down and tell you all about the crazy last few weeks!! Ever since January 10th - when my last few College Program buddies went back to their home countries, but the United States was bombarded by Lauren & Kat's arrival - it's all been pretty much non-stop here. I was lucky enough to get 9 days off work so I could spend time with my friends, and discovered that it is definitely more exhausting being a tourist in Disney than working there!! The first few days the girls were here we hit Animal Kingdom and Sea World, as well as indulging in the classic girly activity of SHOPPING! (Hard to resist when the exchange rate is so good...) My feet were killing me after only a couple of days ... read more

Happy 2008 everybody!!! I am sat on my sofa slowly recovering from a crazy crazy week of saying hello to the New Year and goodbye to a lot of my friends as their programs end and they head home to all 4 corners of the globe. So it's been a week of mixed emotions for everyone. I'm excited for 2008 and the rest of my program, but very sad to see most of my friends leave. Christmas Day was a lot of fun, albeit completely different to any other Christmas I've ever had! I had 3 - count 'em! - Christmas dinners, all of them on Christmas Eve. All my roommates are from South America and it is their tradition to eat Christmas dinner at midnight on Christmas Eve, so we attempted to cook a turkey ... read more

Ho ho ho, Merry Christmas everybody!! Even though Disney is all about the holiday season, I'm still not feeling particularly Christmassy - although right now I'm sat in my living room surrounded by Christmas lights and watching the Wizard of Oz, which isn't entirely unfestive!! But Christmas Day is on Tuesday and I still keep referring to it as 'Tuesday', not Christmas Day. I think it's because I'm still wandering around in a vest top and jeans rather than freezing my butt off in Yorkshire!! The last few weeks at work have been quiet, because of the pre-Christmas lull, but to be honest I haven't been at work very much because my friend Andy came to stay for a week - so I got other people to work my shifts in my place :) Me and ... read more

December 2nd 2007

Hello again one and all, sorry it's been such a long while!! I can't believe it's December already...time is flying so fast! I have been here 2 months today and it only seems like a few weeks. Things are starting to get exciting now as the parks gear up for Christmas. Well, actually, they've had the Christmas decorations up in the Grand for about a month now, but that's America for you - getting into the spirit early! Just after my last entry was Thanksgiving, and I was lucky enough to get enough days off in a row to go up to New Jersey to see my sister Stephanie, my brother-in-law Bill and my nieces Laura and Hilary. It was really nice to see them all again after such a long time - we didn't do ... read more

Hello one and all!! It's been a little while since I last I last wrote anything, but it's certainly been a very busy week!! In between working odd hours and sleeping to get over the odd hours, I've been out doing stuff in the parks with my friends as much as possible, so there hasn't been much time to sit down and write all about it! But now, here I am :) Last week saw Disney start gearing up for Christmas - now in my opinion, Christmas starts on December 1st and not a moment before, but given that this year I am living in the very heart of the American dream I think I'm going to have to make an exception and just get into the spirit! Over the last weekend the annual Gingerbread House ... read more

Good afternoon one and all!! I have survived another week in the thick of Mouse-land - and today is a month to the day that I have been here!! It's gone really fast, only 5 more to go... This week has been particularly tiring due to a combination of finishing training at work and that most commerical of American holidays....Halloween!! As you can imagine, the combination of Halloween and Walt Disney World has the sound of tills ringing in many people's mind, which is very true, but it was also a huge amount of fun being in the hotel and seeing all the little kids dressed up beyond all recognition in a variety of amazing outfits!! I went to two Halloween parties this week - one at Building 30 and one at my old housemate Pat's ... read more

Hello everybody!! This weekend has been one of extreme randomness and general craziness. After a week of training at the Grand Floridian, my brain was just about ready to explode - as were those of my friends who were in a similar situation - so come Saturday we needed to have some fun. First of all though was class!! This is week two of my lectures at UCF and so far they are going well. Despite having been promised faithfully that there would be no homework, I do have 3 projects to complete, but ultimately I want to get the most possible out of this course so I'm determined to give it a go. 4 hours of learning on top of a long week at work made us all pretty tired though, so we decided to ... read more

Hello everybody! Just a quick entry - before I get ready to go to work - on how my first day behind the Front Desk at the Grand Floridian went. I turned up about 40 minutes early absolutely terrified and with no idea of where I was supposed to go or where I should meet my trainer! Luckily I ran into Tatiana, a fellow trainee, and her trainer Hank, who showed me where to go and wait for my trainer, Shereene - who didn't no she was training me. D'oh! No matter, she is really very sweet and is showing me the ropes until Thursday. The first time behind the desk was pretty scary but Shereene seems to think I'm doing good so I'm getting lots of practice. Although I was pretty alarmed when I was ... read more

Afternoon everybody! Today is the fourth and final day of my training at Disney University on how to be a good checker-inner. Last year I thought there was a lot to remember being a vacation planner (fact fans: did you know there are over 100 different ticket combinations available at Walt Disney World?)...it turns out that there's even more when you are on the front desk! You need to know about ticketing AND check-in, check-out, in-house procedures, groups, retail packages, wholesale packages, blah blah blah....AND, do all this while remembering to say 'assist' instead of 'help' and call them 'guests', NOT customers. No wonder I am so exhausted at the moment, my brain is being overloaded with information! My friend who I lived with last year was training me for the first couple of days which ... read more

Morning all! Yesterday was my very first day of work, consisting of an induction to my new workplace - Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, otherwise known at the Grand or the Grand Flo. I was not too impressed at having to get up at 6am, especially as I had gone out to PI (Pleasure Island, Disney's clubbing complex) the night before to 'bond' with other people on the program, which proved harder than expected. But more on that later! The morning consisted mostly of us doing a walking tour of the Grand Flo property, most of which was completed with my mouth hanging wide open at some of the sights and statistics thrown at us. For example: the most expensive room costs nearly $3000/night. The hotel has a big yacht that you can hire by ... read more
