By popular request (who would have thought so many people would be interested in the mechanications - is that a word?! - of my lovely car), I must tell you more about Betty Boy. He's a 2004 Honda CR-V. Apparently one of the safest, most reliable cars on the road. A yummy mummy car. Although I am not a mummy. I haven't a clue about size or horsepower. It struggles slightly up hills but that's probably because half my life is weighing down the trunk. And maybe cars aren't meant to go 70mph up a hill??! But Helen, he is not a monster. Really, compared with other trucks on the car Betty Boy is rather diminutive. I have seen trucks with tyres/tires that are almost as tall as me. Why anyone needs such large tyres/tires is ... read more

June 14th 2009 So near yet so far I think it's fair to say that I'm known for having an excellent sense of direction. Coupled with superb map-reading skills, it is hard for me to get lost. Except in Guildford. And, it would seem, America. Alex, I could hear you laughing at me from afar on Wednesday morning. I simply couldn't find the entrance to the freeway. I could see it on the GPS. Sat in Betty Boy I could see the cars rushing by not a few yards away. But could I join them?! No. It would appear Milpitas was as reluctant to see me go as I was to leave. After 45 minutes and an unexpected detour to the city's sewage works I thankfully happened upon the south entrance to highway 880. Hallelujah! The ... read more

June 11th 2009 A new addition to the family Please say 'hi' to Betty Boy. After his purchase last Wednesday, I finally brought him home from the showroom on Saturday. In good old sensible, grown-up fashion I took him in for a full service to hopefully eliminate any mechanical problems further down the line. Fingers crossed. My new boy is called Betty. He is definitely a boy. And his name is definitely Betty. Or more precisely, Betty Boy. I like a car with a nice gender identity crisis going on. I think Betty Boy and I will be happy together. I have a USMC (Marine Corps) decal on the back already, a GPS system, that little device for hooking your ipod to the radio, and three (!) cup holders in the front. All in all, this ... read more

June 3rd 2009 Fond farewells What a couple of weeks! It is unbelievable that everything went so swimmingly and to plan. Thanks to everyone for all my send-offs, and for taking all the leftovers from Saturday's BBQ!! Portion-size clearly isn't my speciality. After a lovely, mad dash to Edinburgh on Sunday, I finally finished packing, tidied the house and at long last hopped on the plane to San Francisco on Monday afternoon. The 11-hour flight was unremarkable - certainly not the epic 24-hour voyage to Sydney I made in January! Sat next to a tall, strapping Irish man, I was, however, reminded of the joys of being petite. The poor guy just couldn't get comfortable. Me? I slipped into my pyjamas, put on the headphones and caught up on a few movies. There are much worse ... read more

May 25th 2009 A week to go This is a travel blog, but I'm still at home. This time in a week I will probably be in exactly the same place - sitting in bed contemplating the trip I am about to embark upon. Can't quite believe I am actually going away. It's been a few years since I left England for more than a couple of weeks . So what's the plan Anyone who knows me, knows there is a plan. The planning is almost as exciting as the doing! There should be a map on this page somewhere showing you where I am planning to go. I'm travelling West to East, via the North and the South. Flying into San Francisco on June 1st, New York - and the city's marathon - is my ... read more
