Hooray!! Our spring vacation trip to the south is here. We left Thursday afternoon and headed south to see our new grandson. Yes, we’d also see Josh and Jen. But 3 months in infant growth is a lot of change. Although Josh and Jen had Skyped us and we had had a chance to see Drew, it’s always better to see in person. We only got as far a Lumberton, NC the first day. We had hoped to get to Florence and camp where they had a hot tub, but it was just a bit too far. However, the next day, we got to Savanna, GA and met Darryl and Robbie Coleman for lunch. We had stayed with them for a couple of nights last year on our way north, and though we could only meet ... read more

Since helping out our friends, we've had a couple of more shake down cruises. First was to Lake Anna State Park in Louisa. We had gone there last year with our friends, the Lodges, and this year Trish Moore, from the So-We-Go Sams club joined us. While the week prior had been sunny, hot and in the 80s, this weekend was cold, some rain, and dreary. At first, Trish wasn't going to join us, but we convinced her it would be fun. In fact, when we got to the park, she was waiting for us. We picked 3 adjacent sites, set up, and waited for Lodges. Trish came over and we had a great time chatting, listening to Bluegrass, and munching on cookies and coffee. Lodges arrived and after greetings all around, we ended up in ... read more

Did you see the movie "RV" with Robin Williams? Problem was, he tried to go RVing without help. Well, at the Richmond RV show a month ago, we took some friends who wanted to see different RVs and maybe get information on rentals so they could "try" RVing. We left them alone for a bit, and next thing we knew, they had bought a 32' Class A Hurricane. Beautiful coach with a delightful dining "nook" to sit in, 2 slides, and lots of bells and whistles. Only problem was, they had never been camping in one before, and I'm not sure when the last time they camped was. We congratulated them, got excited for them, and then wondered what we had created. Trish and I volunteered to take them to pick up their coach so they ... read more

We arrived at Josh's on Saturday, January 23 at 8:30PM. We had left VA at 7:30AM so the 13 hours was pretty good time. The roads were clear and little wind, so other than a 20+ mile section near Brunswick, GA (at night, in the dark) where the road was 2 narrow lanes southbound, with Jersey barriers right up close, it was uneventual. No, Kim did not drive. But having 3 people in the coach gave each of us a chance to go to the back and sleep and still have a co-pilot to chat with the driver. Trish and I hugged our son, then lined up the RV in his drive, plugged in the electric, and headed inside. Kim had given her brother a hug and hustled inside. By the time we got in, she ... read more

This is a strange title for a blog about travel. But we are proud new grandparents. Our first born, Joshua, and his wife, Jen, had their first child and our first grandchild, Andrew Jefferson, on January 7. Mother, child and father are all doing fine. So why the travel blog? We arranged to go see them long ago, when we first found out. (Actually, last year when we visited, but we couldn't put it in the blog then because they hadn't told everyone yet.) This next week Josh is off on vacation, so we arranged to go visit. Our daughter, Kim, really, REALLY wanted to go see her nephew, so she decided to take a week and join us. At first we were going to drive down and stay in the guest room. The Toyota gets ... read more

We moved from Northern NY in 1999. This was our first trip back in almost 10 years. We were going to stay with friends from our days in Iwakuni, Japan, Jeff and Gerri Sammons who were living in Dexter, NY. Some of this story is not going to interest many folks, but our family and kids will delight in seeing some pictures and learning how Watertown, NY has changed over the years. We had lived there, and had a cottage in Redwood, NY, from 1983 until 1999. (We were overseas for 6 1/2 years, but returned to let Kim graduate from HS there.) We left on the Thursday before Labor Day weekend and elected to take back roads north instead of fighting traffic on I-95/495/270. It was a beautiful, peaceful ride up through Point of Rocks, ... read more

There are some who might think we haven’t done any camping this summer or gone anywhere. Well, with high gas prices last year, that was true. But we have gotten out this year and gone places. Most were weekend trips with the Good Sam group, though we have gone elsewhere. We were supposed to be camping this weekend, but our surrogate granddaughter couldn’t get away to go camping and to the water park near Williamsburg, so we cancelled and stayed home, prepping the RV for the next big trip. In early July we joined the Good Sam So-We-Go chapter for a weekend of camping in Staunton, VA in the Shenandoah Valley. It was a Hawaiian celebration weekend and all wore Aloha shirts, leis, and our meals had a distinctive Hawaiian flavor. We took teriyaki wings and ... read more

While waiting to get some work done on the RV at our local dealer, Trish looked through a book featuring Army Corps of Engineer (COE) sites. She came home excited because there were a number of sites that looked to be near us. We had first experience COE sites in the early 1970s and had camped at several. Back then, we had our VW Sportsmobile camper and often went camping with our great friend, Carol Morgan. Our camper then could sleep 4 people (very cozy) but we were younger, thinner, and it was all a great adventure. We have not camped at a COE site in years. After plotting distance and checking recreation.gov on-line, we decided to head to the nearest campground on the John Kerr lake in southern Virginia. It was an easy run down ... read more

We have been members of the Good Sam club for a number of years. The benefits of discounts, information, and insurances are excellent. But we are not "club" joiners. We have a couple of friends we enjoy camping with, and that is fine. But last year, on a whim, we visited one of the local chapters near us when they were camping. We were taken by their friendliness and ease. So we joined the SO-WE-GO Sams. Last fall we attended our first Samboree in Harrisonburg, VA. We were told it was smaller than the spring one, so this year we were really looking forward to going. At the winter luncheon meetings (no camping in December/January snow), it was announced the theme was Beach Party and there would be a parade of the chapters to see who ... read more

Well, we have been home from Florida for 4 weeks and I am just now getting around to tallying up the trip. We noticed some significant differences in costs from last year. Gas prices are down and although we drove further, we spent a lot less. That's good news and means maybe we'll be more inclined to get out more this year. We traveled over 2100 miles and used 206 gallons. That's an average of 10.4 MPG and for a motorhome hauling a 400 pound motorscooter plus all our "stuff" and water, that's pretty good. Gas cost $406 for an average cost per gallon of $1.97. Last year gas was averaging $3.55. We were on the road for 17 nights. As usual, we stayed in a WalMart our first night out, but spent 11 nights in ... read more
