We arrived back in VA on April 18 and the cats were very glad to be "home". They walked the yard, checked out smells, and seemed very happy to be back. Our big job was to finish packing, clean the house, and prepare to move out. I had contracted with a moving company to move us for what seemed a reasonable fee. They would not pack (except for furniture and a few other items) so we had to make sure it was done right. After 7 moves with the government and another 5 on our own, we felt comfortable and competent that we could get it right. I had contracted with Mayflower moving in January and the move coordinator, Tyrone, came to the house, gave us a binding estimate, and walked us through what was expected. ... read more

I "retired" on March 26. I spent 3 days camping (a previous blog) and then, it was back to work. First we finished packing in VA. Kim came over the first of April to take her cats to our favorite vet and helped a lot. We got 95% of the house packed, packed the car and the RV and the pickup truck and prepared to move out. Monday we left for 'Bama about noon and in strong crosswinds, headed south. This was the first time we had driven separately and we kept in touch with a small handheld radio set. We needed more frequent breaks since we couldn't spell each other. Weather reports got ominous the further south in VA we went. Finally, around Blacksburg, we pulled over for dinner and decided to call it ... read more

I officially retired on March 26. But on March 23, I had a retirement ceremony at work. It was a wonderful occasion and I was fortunate to have so many friends and former employers attend. The Deputy Director, Joel Eissinger, told me over 2 months ago I should have a ceremony. I resisted because I just wanted to quietly fade away. Joel was most insistent and told me I needed the closure. I didn't think I did so still said no. Then he told me I owed it to the young people I had been mentoring and needed to show them what the years of work meant and how much people valued what we had been doing. Well, being a softy, he got to me so I agreed. Joel, Dave Skocik (his deputy), Otis Moore (the ... read more

Every spring, toward the end of March, we like to take the RV out to Lake Anna State Park and camp for a couple of days. It gives us a chance to clean the coach, arrange and make sure we have everything, test the system and find any problems, and if needed, fix or repair any issues that may have developed over the winter. For the past three years we have gone with Dave and Bonnie Lodge. We set the weekend of March 25-27 for this year's outing. On March 23 I had a lovely retirement ceremony at HQMC and Thursday, March 24 was my last working day. I officially retired on March 26. So our outing this year was two-fold as we planned to celebrate with good friends and some liquid libation. We invited several ... read more

After closing on the house in Alabama, we drove to Jacksonville, FL to see our son, daughter-in-law, and grandson. Someone asked how long would it take to get from Alabama to Jacksonville. I said, "About 2 weeks....4 hours to the Gulf coast, camp and relax for 10-12 days, then another 4-5 hours to Jacksonville." This time the trip was on back roads and it took about 7 hours with stops for lunch and driving at a leisurely 55-60 MPH. (With current gas prices, this is smart driving.) Drew was still up when we got in and I must say, singularly unimpressed with his grandparents. He has only seen us a few times. Last time John saw him was last April and Trish saw him in July. So we were strangers. We were ready for that and ... read more

OK, we finally closed on the house in Alabama. It is 2800 sq ft on 5 acres in Crossville. It is located on Sand Mtn, which is a large plateau running from TN down south in AL. We are at @ 1020 ft elevation and have small ponds around us. We also have woods and fields (as you can see from the photos.) The community is rural and yet we are 9 miles from Boaz which has a WalMart and plenty of stores and also about 8 miles from Albertville where there is a Piggly Wiggly, KMart, Waffle House and plenty of shopping. We are 15 miles from a couple of state parks, one on Lake Guntersville, and about 25 miles from Weiss Lake with camping, fishing, and swimming. We have an outdoor basketball court where ... read more

This is truly a new beginning. I have decided to retire (finally) and will be officially retired as of 26 March 2011. This is after 10 years teaching and 31 1/2 years working for the Federal Government. It has, for the most part, been wonderful. I've had great students (some of whom I still keep in touch with); worked with marvelous fellow teachers (most of whom have been retired for several years and we still stay in touch); been supervised by lousy, good, great and a few exceptional leaders; and shared coffee, laughs, and the ups and downs of assignments and change with some lousy, good, great and exceptional Federal employees. We've had the opportunity to move and live in a variety of locations: Ohio, NH, Pennsylvania, NY, Japan, DC, and Virginia. We've found good everywhere ... read more

Well, it's been a while and I have been remiss in noting our camping. Not really sure why. But here is a brief accounting of the outings. As mentioned in an earlier blog, we had been south to see our grandson (and his parents) and then headed up to Alabama to check out property. We finally got home and shortly after, in mid-May, headed off to the Virginia Good Sam "Samboree" at Bethpage Resort. This huge gathering brings Good Sammers from all over the state to a location twice a year for fun, fellowship, and food (of course!). We went last year for the first time and were exhausted. We were determined not to overdo this year. So we joined in the potluck, had morning breakfast furnished by the Samboree, attended the flea market and the ... read more

We left Mentone and headed to Crossville, TN to see Trish's brother. We always stay at the Spring Lake RV Resort (formerly known as Roam and Roost) and we were not disappointed. The campground is lovely and we got a site near the bathhouse and able to see the small lake. Domino enjoyed going out and exploring and Slinky, now feeling more confident, joined him on several explorations. They were both very good and came right back into the camper. Pat came and picked us up the first day and we spent the day with Dick and Pat, chatting and catching up on family and our various adventures. Pat, as always, fixed a luscious lunch and tremendous dinner. (She remembered I have a fondness for au gratin potatoes and fixed some for dinner.) We went back ... read more

We had driven I-75 towards Atlanta before. It’s an interstate…flat, easy, fast and boring. We had been advised to drive through Atlanta instead of going around because it’s shorter and quicker. True….BUT….it was 8 lanes….per side. That’s 16 lanes going through Atlanta. One lane was HOV (high occupancy) and only needed 2 people. However, trucks with 6 wheels were banned. Since the RV has 6 wheels, we thought we better not try. So with cars speeding past on both sides, I gripped tight, Trish drove as hard as I did and we went right through. Washington, DC has 8 lanes BOTH ways on I-95. I thought I could handle city traffic. Suffice to say, next time we go WAY around Atlanta, if we even come close. Once past the city, Trish drove through the mountains to ... read more
