Well its been a while since we’ve written so here it goes. A few months ago my friend Hugo and I decided to have an adventurous day and climb some waterfalls near the house at Jurrama. We got there early brought all the climbing gear and headed up the falls. These falls are really neat because they have lots of huge tiers that you have to climb up. After a few failed attempts to get above the first small one (we got up but couldn’t get around it, so we jumped off back into the pool below which I discovered was not deep) we made it about a third of the way up where a large pool and waterfall awaited us. It was a beautiful spot, so we went swimming for a bit while deciding what ... read more
Well its been a while but I have a day off (don’t feel like doing homework) so I can type for a bit. Classes started a few months ago and im taking a rainforest populations/community class, intro to GIS and doing my literature review for my project next semester. It seems like the same as last semester, tons of work. Before classes started Crystal and I had a marine animal behaviour block class that went to Orpheus Island. The work was ok (we snorkeled all day looking at fish) but the off time was the best. We found tons of small whip snakes to play with (determined them to be slightly venomous after a friend got bit on the finger), an energetic echidna and then manta rays. So all in all we had a great time. ... read more
Hi Everyone, So I guess I should start helping out more with the blog. Scott has been doing too much of the work and really it isn’t fair so here we go. Well after an exciting season of volleyball The Flogging Mollies (that’s us!) ended up taking second place in the league! As a team that made it into the finals by default for another team that couldn’t make it (because we ended up finishing in 5th) we beat the 3rd and 2nd place teams! We ended up losing the championship to The Yellow Tails and posted is the glorious footage of that game. All and all not too bad of an ending to our season and we’ve already signed up for the next one. After a grueling semester of being buried in our laptops and ... read more
So since beer prices are so high the great alternative that we came up with is brewing beer at home! (ha and some of you were thinking we would stop drinking). Well our first batch was a simple lager and it came out really good surprisingly. The next beer that we brewed was closer to a hoppy red and now that it has matured a little longer it tastes pretty good. Fermenting right is our first hef. Hopefully that one will be great also because they really don’t have many wheat beers here. So if anyone comes and visits we might have some tasty homebrew waiting for you. For our spring/fall break Crystal and I each went on field trips that were completely different. For my trip we headed out to Morrinya which is in the ... read more
54 Regatta crs, Douglas 4814 QLD, Australia. So I thought I would give out our address while I remember, if anyone feels like sending cookies or recess peanut butter cups, we would love you. For Easter break we headed down to the whit Sunday islands with two other students. We rented a car and I got the lucky job of driving the three hours down there. So steering wheel on the opposite side and driving on the opposite side didn’t bug me to much, but what did was the damn turn signal was on the wrong side! Every time I went to signal the windshield wipers went on. …Great. When we got there we found out that are room wasn’t held for us ( it got booked the night before) and every place was booked out ... read more
Everything is still going beautifully here in Australia. School has barely just begun and we don’t have jobs yet. As a result there is a lot of free time to explore our surroundings and relax. We went on a trip to a place called Crystal Creek with a group of students. It was about a 40minute drive north of us and it was absolutely gorgeous. This was where you actually start making your way up into the true rainforest. We spent a few hours at this large swimming hole with fairly deep water and swift currents. We exhausted ourselves by trying to go up the rapids and had some bumpy times coming back down them. Next we went to another part of Crystal Creek further up where there were good cliff jumps and waterfalls. We can’t ... read more
23rd We went over to the strand the other day which is a long section of park along the beach. They have a kids area that’s a small water park. Giant squirt guns and things spraying water all over the place, crystal ran through it and got soaked. The beach is beautiful but you can only go in the water at a few location that have stinger nets. The water is really warm almost to warm, but still refreshing. Walking along the strand we found some blue cheek honey eaters and red tailed black cockatoos, so they were fun to watch cracking open the beach almonds that are littering the ground. Today we went out on our bikes behind school where some tracks lead towards the hills, and we found a huge spider. I actually almost ... read more
Ok so we made it to Australia! We had some small problems along the way like being dropped off at the wrong terminal, having only one person giving out boarding passes in Fiji so it took forever, and somehow crystal got all the way to Brisbane without anyone saying anything about the 100lb bag that she packed. But once there they wouldn’t take it on the plane so we had to take out all the heavy stuff and somehow cram it in all of our other bags, so that was fun. After arriving in Townsville we headed to the hotel and slept. It has been raining most of the days that we have been here but it is beautiful, we checked out one place to stay already but we really didn’t like it, but on the ... read more
