Our next leg of the trip started much like the others: a 5hour bus trip which took 9 hours, a crazy bus ride into town and a hunt for a hostel, which in this case, was the Cranky Croc Hostel. Our dorm consisted of 3 nocturnal people, which suited us quite well. We slept while they were out and they came home anytime btwn 6am and 10am, just as we were leaving for the day. Bogota is a nice city with a number of things to see. We went to the police museum, where we learnt more about Pablo Escobar (the drug kingpin who was shot down after a 499 day manhunt) and the different police sectors (public police service is compulsory for all men after school). We enjoyed a very different graffiti tour and learnt ... read more

We are finally happy. Very happy : ) The first few days after our Lost City hike have been our lowest point yet. The ugliest, most resistant tummy bug found its way inside of our tummies and wreaked havoc for over 2 weeks. 4 courses of medication did not help, and eventually, suspecting something more serious like cholera or dysentry, we headed to the clinic in San Gil (after a charming 18 hour bus ride complete with cramps, nausea and no toilet paper in the toilet). We finally got some decent medication that seems to be doing the job. So after days of eating almost nothing, we are almost brave enough to eat street food again! Our time in Cartagena was mediocre. It was the first port of entrance for the Spanish. Most of our time ... read more

Hi all!Hope this finds you all well. Thanks for informing us that it is the World Cup at the moment - would have passed us by completely! Also heard we won against Wales! The last week has been very eventful. Our extra days in Santa Marta were used to sleep and try to get rid of a bad case of gipoguts. We also stumbled upon a festival with some cool theatrical pieces and music, including a woman doing trapeze work while hanging from a rope held up by the fire dept´s crane! Unfortunately, the next day, two guys attempted to rob us while we were leaving a corner cafe. The two men flanked us and then held a knife to Marco´s side while reaching into his pockets. I ran for help while Marco just refused to ... read more

After waiting for a bus which never arrived, we were forced to take an expensive taxi to the Manaus airport. Three flights later, a pop in at the swish Panama airport and we landed safely in Santa Marta. Not after a couple of hours spent in Colombia´s capital, Bogota. We visited the famous Gold Museum - a world class museum. Our jaws dropped at the amount of delectable baked goods and fruit juices on street corners everywhere. We also had our first good taste of torrential downpours as we ran back to the airport for our final flight. One runway was closed due to it being struck by lightning! Santa Marta is a small town on the Northern coast of Colombia. We were happy to catch a small minibus outside the airport, but our mood changed ... read more

South America » Brazil » Amazonas » Manaus September 7th 2011

Wow. The past 2 weeks, we have experienced every emotion possible. We are enjoying our first 'comfortable' day - with not a single item of clean clothing left! Our boat trip from Belem - Manaus was the first test in animal behaviour. All the tourists pitch up 3 hours early (as told to us in the guide books) and then stand around waiting to board. You then grab you little piece of territory where you hang a hammock which is to be your home for the next 6 days. As new people board, you lie on the hammock and splay yourself as wide as possible, giving the evil-eye to newcombers who want to pitch their hammock up right next to yours. One becomes lost in a sea of hammocks as everyone lies on top of each ... read more

In a few hours we get on a boat and head up the Amazon River - somebody pinch me! The output of the Amazon Rvr in one day is enough to provide the whole of New York City for one year! We have experienced a number of logistical problems the last 3 days - a serious lack of space (we now each have a backpack, a bag and some plastic packets) and flights that no longer fly to where we want to go. So, although Belem is a shoppers paradise (clothes at super cheap prices), we had to forego most of the shopping in order to visit all the travel agencies in the area to see if they could organise something. With no luck. We have therefore decided to head half way up the Amazon River ... read more

After running (and almost missing) our bus from Rio, we spent a leisurely 18 hours on a bus to Brasilia, Brazil´s capital. Despite having bought the cheapest tickets, the bus was great with ample leg room and good drivers. We soon discovered, however, that Brasilians have a bad habit of listening to music from their cellphones at any volume level and at any time of the day or night. We arrived in Brasilia to what reminded me of a bit of India - a chaotic bus terminal and no one really knowing what was happening. Our Ruigh Guide book let us down by leading us to a closed down hostel, another that didn~t answer their doorbell and a third very pricy one. We finally found something. Brasilia is a hot, dry, dusty city and we were both ... read more

After disembarking our bus piloted by a Colin McRae/Ganiel de Villiers wannabe, we made our way to our hostel we had sort of booked. As we looked for our hostel, the drizzle turned into our first rains of the trip. We found the hostel, or rather a delapidated building that should have been our hostel (with carnival masts in the front yard). The neighbour informed us it had moved, and with the help of a friendly pharmacist (much like our brother in law ; ), we found the actual buiilding. We stayed in a 10 bed dorm building site, I mean hostel... This was our attempt to make good for the fierce exchange rate that had seen our budget overspent from day 1. We met some cool Ozzie, Spanish and Austrian folk here, barr one snoring ... read more

Having said our final farewells at CT international, we settled into our seats excited at having our own TV with hundreds of games and movies. 24 hours later, neither movies nor games could keep us entertained any longer. Sao Paulo is a vast city, covered in a thick layer of smog. With a population of 18 million, most locals live in high rise buildings. We arrived in time for an Italian festival, where we ate Italian food and were shoved along in a midst of a throng of people. Brazil is a melting pot of races and culttures, seemingly connected only by a common language and country. I, Phillipa, have been surprised at my level of Portuganish (Portuguese and Spanish mix) and have been communicating successfully. After walking about 30kms in 2 days, my feet were blistered ... read more

Welcome to our first blog! We are enjoying our last few days in the Friendly City with friends, family, and lots of sunshine! Our long checklists are (almost) ticked and we have said goodbye to our home and hope that the weeds don’t take over while we are away (our tenants consist of 1 mom, 1 baby and a computer guy, hope they look after our garden!). We start on Thursday morning (PE guys, we fly out at 11:35 so we’ll be at the airport at 10:30) with a scenic tour of a large portion of the world – Cape Town (landing at 13:00, leaving again at 18:50), over Africa to Qatar and then back in the direction we came from to Sao Paulo, Brazil. Total flying time: 35hours, 30 mins; a perfect recipe for deep ... read more
