too much free time.... just wanted to say that after reading your blog which is based on absolutely nothing at all, i feel dumber. i am mad at myself right now for even wasting more of my time by commenting to this but i just want you to know that the next time you display something on the world wide web could it be something of more importance, maybe like canned goods or something........
Qualifications Holday Road, do not despair. If the manager of the Bass Pro Shop had any kind of literary insight he would not be the manager of the Bass Pro Shop, right?
The Raven The Raven was also a poem written in 1845 by Poe. The poem is made up of 18 stanzas of six lines each. Generally, the meter is trochaic octameter (eight trochaic feet per line, each foot having one stressed syllable followed by one unstressed syllable, for those who don’t know). Poe, however, claimed the poem was a combination of octameter acatalectic, heptameter catalectic and tetrameter catalectic. In my opinion Poe took the pattern (or patterns) of Elizabeth Barrett's poem "Lady Geraldine's Courtship" but what do I know?
Anyway, the poem could have been written about Houston. Sam’s wife was not named Lenore. He was married to an Eliza, a Tiana, and a Margaret. None of those rhyme with nevermore. Lenore does. Therefore Poe used his “poets privilege” (I just made that up) to change the name of his spouse. Sam would have been 48 at the time Poe wrote this poem. He had married all three wives by 1840. So it could have been about any (or all three). Or it possibly referred to his “wound that never healed”. Could it be that “the wound that never healed” was in reference to a social disease?
Sam:” When will this burning cease?”
Raven: “Nevermore!”
"True Grits" "True Grits" is a very rare book. I would think that anyone that could produce a copy in short order would have to be an exceptional character, if you know what I mean, and I think you do. Holidayroad.
You Didn't Answer the Title There is also a book called "True Grits," not to be confused with the John Wayne movie, which lacks the "s" at the end of "Grit." This book asks a question similar to your blog title:
What is the singular of "grits"?
a. grits
b. grit
c. gris gris
d. ain't nunna yer nevermind
The answer is "d."
By the by, I am a lifelong grits eater, and always will be. I eat them the proper Southern way, with half a stick of butter and a pound of salt. No whimpy yankee syrup belongs near grits. Now you know.
Another bit of Sam trivia Sam Houston was adopted by Cherokee Chief Oo-loo-te-ka, also known as Chief John Jolly, who gave Houston the name Colonneh, which means "The Raven." To the Indians, raven meant good fortune. Sam was known as the Raven for the rest of his life.
Some trip I didn't know that Howard Johnson's was still in business. After looking at the pool and wall, and hearing your story of the lack of hot water and the non-functioning restaurant, I can't figure out how they exist.
great trips Thanks for sharing your trips with me. Seems as if you had a great time this summer. I particularly liked your suggestion for color-coded roads.
