I'm an American student from the University of Oklahoma studying abroad at the Technische Universität in 2009/2010. I'm looking forward to all the people and places I'm going to see. Wish me luck!

Just finished an awesome time in Budapest, but I'm writing on my iPod again so I doubt I'll be able to type it all out on here. My first day I went for a walk down the Andrassy ùt, Budapest's grand boulevard. I had my Rick Steves book in hand and looked like a complete tourist, but there was absolutely no way I could've blended in there--the language is incredibly difficult to pick up. In fact, Hungarian's closest language relative is Finnish, and it's not even in the same language language family as the rest of the European languages. Anyway, I thought Andrassy ùt was pretty, but not spectacular in itself. What I really loved the first day was my visit to the Turkish baths. These are all over the city and are a Budapest tradition: ... read more

So, my semester is finally over and I've begun my European traveling extravaganza! With my Eurail pass I get 10 travel days within 2 months, so this is the itinerary I have so far: Vienna, Budapest, Arezzo (Italy), Toulouse and Paris before coming back to Berlin to meet Mom, Dad and Tricia. It's gonna be awesome! Glad to fi ally get to travel some; I love Berlin, but I think I could use some time outside of the big city to calm my nerves. In fact, I'm already in Vienna so I'll go ahead and talk about that. I'm writing on my iPod touch, so it'll be a little bit short, though.  Vienna is an incredibly beautiful city, especially coming straight from Berlin. There's hardly any graffiti, the streets are clean and the buildings are magnificient. ... read more

Just a short update on what I've been up to lately: A couple weeks ago Berlin had its annual Lange Nacht der Museen--Long Night of the Museums. The name basically explains it--60 of the city's museums had special exhibitions, lectures or performances set up, there were special buses running between them all, and they all stayed open until 2:00 am. Since I hadn't managed to get around to many of the museums yet, I thought it'd be a great idea to check them out. Even though it's kind of an unusual way to spend a Saturday night, it turned out to be a great time! I wound up going to only four of the museums, but I think it was better to actually spend some time in them rather than running around trying to see everything. ... read more

Last weekend I took a trip with my German class to the city of Weimar, in the German state of Thuringia, and I just now got the pictures uploaded. Weimar is a relatively small town--65,000 people--but it's had a lot to do with German history; Goethe and Schiller lived there in the 18th century, and the Bauhaus school was founded by Walter Gropius there in 1919. My experience was especially interesting, though, because our German teacher, Ulla, was our tour guide. She explained to us all the sites we were walking past, and coordinated all of our activities, including: a guided tour of the Bauhaus Universität, a guided tour of the Buchenwald concentration camp just outside the city, a lunch at Residenz, the oldest cafe in Weimar, and a quirky hostel in the middle of the ... read more

It's been a long, long time since I've written here, but I think I talked to most of you over the break while I was home. So, just an update on the time since I've been back: I have a new apartment, and it's been a huge improvement. I'm living with two guys in East Berlin, in the borough of Friedrichshain, between the East Side Gallery and Karl-Marx-Allee. This is part of the city now where all the young people live, because rents were so low right after the Wall came down. Supposedly they're really now, but I don't think so--the rent's still lower here than in Oklahoma last year. The street I live on is a gathering point for lots of people that live in the area; there's tons of bars and restaurants, and apparently ... read more

The last couple weeks have definitely been pretty busy but a definite improvement over what I wrote about last time. I made a very last-minute decision to visit my friend Barry, who's studying abroad in Cork Ireland this semester. There's a very cheap airline in Europe called RyanAir, and I managed to get a fairly good deal only 3 days before I left. There's a reason they're cheap, of course: no baggage is included in the fare, the carry-on rules are notoriously strict and they're constantly trying to sell you overpriced liquor during the flight. I made it into Dublin, though, and took the bus down to Cork to see Barry. It was a great change of scenery after two months in a big city; Cork has about 200,000 people but it feels much smaller than ... read more

What a week. After spending all of September and half of October meeting people, exploring the city and having fun, I almost forgot that I had to take some classes. Unfortunately that turned out to be a lot easier said than done. I'll try to make a laundry list of things I don't like about the system/bureaucracy for choosing classes at TU Berlin, but I have plenty to say about it. First of all, there actually IS no enrollment process. You just show up the first day of class and hope there's enough room for you. Knowing that, the logical thing to do would be to look at the online course catalog (Vorlesungsverzeichnis--a word I've come to absolutely hate) and pick out a bunch of classes that interest you. But...you have to dive through multiple levels ... read more

It's been awhile since I've written, partly because I've been busy, partly from having a friend visit and partly because I've been neglecting my health. The German language class ended last week, and I was a little sad about it. I really enjoyed meeting all the exchange students in the class and having fun, while learning a little bit of German (probably not enough). I think I might be able to find another German class to take during the semester, so hopefully I can do that and keep improving. Lately I've been really lazy and have mostly spoken English...but next week, when classes finally start, I won't have any choice but to switch back to German (even if I sound like I'm in kindergarten). I had a really good friend visit me this weekend. He's studying ... read more

The weather is still incredible here. I'm pretty sure it's unprecedented for Berlin to have so many beautiful days in a row. We didn't have class today so I let myself sleep in. The Spanish kids had a huge party upstairs last night, which kept me up for awhile but it was great to meet new people. One of the international advisors from the Technische Universität was there, too. Plus, free sangria and food are always good. On the other hand, I doubt the Putzfrau will be in any better mood after cleaning up that mess... But anyway, since the weather was so nice again, I decided to head over to the east side of the city and see some remaining parts of the Wall. They're pretty far from my room, since I live by what ... read more

Finally, I have internet in my room...after 25 euros and a horrendously outdated instruction manual. Today my class and I had an excursion into the city, starting from our building on the TU campus and ending in the district of Mitte (downtown). It was a beautiful day again, as it has been nearly the whole time I've been here. I thought I'd share a couple pictures I took along the way; they're not necessarily the best quality but I had to do my best to keep up with the group. I'm getting much more used to things here in Berlin. Finally, I'm able to buy groceries at the supermarket without causing a scene, I know to stay out of the bike lanes on the street, and I've stopped taking the wrong subway train (only to get ... read more
