On Thursday, after a pastry breakfast provided by Henri, we set off with Noemi to explore downtown Liege. Although it was chilly and windy, it was not as cold as Brugge. We walked a short way to the bus stop where we took the bus into town. Noemi gave us a tour of area shops and cafes. We had lunch at a cafe,The Danish. Dorothy was able to walk over from her school to join us for lunch. After lunch, Henri met us and he took us on a grand walking tour of Liege. Since he grew up here and also delivered mail for a few years, he was a great tour guide who knows every part of the city. I suggested to him that he should take up a new profession and give walking tours ... read more

Monday morning we boarded a bus in Venice and traveled to the town of Trevisio. From their small airport we boarded a plane for Brussels, Henri and Noemi were there to greet us and drive us back to their home in Leige. Their house sits atop a hill, and from our room at night we can see the lights of the town below. However, my favorite spot is at the kitchen table surrounded by windows looking out at the garden. It felt like home and we really got a good night's sleep. On Tuesday, we rode around town, stopping at a couple overlook viewpoints to take in the sights. Liege has many old buildings that have great character. Dorothy's school was founded as a school for girls during a time when many did not think it ... read more

April 22nd 2012

Today is our last full day in Italy. Since there is a church in nearly every piazza, it wasn’t difficult to find one. Every church seems to have tombs in the floor, in the chapels and attached to walls. All the churches are huge and have great artwork and lots of marble. But enough! Today we rode a boat to the islands of Burano and Murano. Our tour guide was Christina who married a Venitian but is from Checkoslovakia. Burano is a fishing village known for its colorful houses. Since it is foggy much of the time, the women of the village decided to paint their houses in bright colors so their husbands could find their way back from fishing. If you were to buy a home you must keep it the same color. Burano is ... read more

I will update on Friday and Saturday together. Friday morning, we decided we would spend our last hours in Florence climbing the dome of the Cathedral. I don't know how many steps, but it was quite a lot. However, the sky was clear enough for us to have great views from the top. Friday afternoon we boarded the train in Florence and traveled a little over 2 hours to Venice.(Venezia). When we got off the train we pulled our luggage across the Scalzi bridge, crossing the Grand Canal. Our hotel was just across the canal. After checking in and dropping off our luggage, we met the other couple, Glenn and Michele, in the lobby. Since we had a tour the next morning that began at the gates to the Royal Gardens on St Mark's Square, we ... read more

Today was our last ful day in Florence, and it was a great one! Once again Leonardo was our driver and he drove us to Castello Del Trebbio, a privately owned castle about one hour northeast of Florence. We enjoyed beautiful scenery along the way. Although we had an overcastsky most of the day, we were happy it was not raining. Alberto. cousin of the owner of the castle, was our tour guide. Before we began our tour we met the gamekeeper, Mario. Mario is in his 80's and has been gamekeeper since 1953. At that time, the gamekeeper had to sign an agreement not to get married. They wanted the gamekeeper to have no distractions as he protected the vineyards from poachers and wild animals. When the present owners bought the castle, they allowed him ... read more

April 18th 2012

This morning I actually got up early and got a little exercise, a walk/run for 2 miles. I saw one jogger. People here don't seem to need to jog; they walk so much that you don't see much obesity. At 10, we met our new driver/guide...Leonardo (apparently a popular name here) for the drive to the Castle Verrazzano in Chianti. First we made a stop in Greve which is the capital of Chianti and this region seems to specialize in wild boar. At the Castle Verrazzano, we toured the winery which produces the great Chianti Classico wines. After the tour, which was not only about wine, but also about the olive oil they produce, we sat down for wine tasting and lunch. We began with bruschetta, then had a vaiety of cold cut type meats including ... read more

April 17th 2012

Finally, we see the Tuscan sun as we travel to San Gimignano. This 12th century town is a real gem and known for its towers, built by noble families within the walls of the town. San Gimignano was one of the towns welcoming travelers on pilgrimages from France to Rome. Today, only 14 of the 70 towers remain. After sampling pastries, we had some time to explore and got some great pictures. After leaving San Gimignano, our driver Roberto, delivered us to Siena. Siena was once a capitol city and a rival to Florence. Naturally, it has its own cathedral to show off the wealth of their noble familes. Plans to enlarge the Duomo were interrupted by the plaque of the 1300's. Plazza Del Campo is the main plazza and it's great event today is the ... read more

April 16th 2012

OK, for some reason, this is the 3rd time I am writing this entry. The blog keeps losing my text so I am saving every few sentences and you are getting the short version. Goodbye to Roma and we take a high speed train to Florence. (A nice young man helped us with our luggage, then came back asking for tips.) Smooth, quick ride to Florence....Hotel Albergotto on a streett lined with designer shops which we cannot afford. We meet our guide, Leonardo. After a 2 hour tour, we see two great plazzos...one with the requisite cathedral and the other with the government building. I will say there are many beautiful sculptures and a very interesting midevil section of town. Leo makes some suggestions for dinner. We find a quite place favored by the locals and ... read more

April 16th 2012

Today, we actually saw the sun! Our tour started in the morning and we toured the ancient sites including the Collisum, the Roman Forum, and the Arch of Titus. I think I have included a picture of the brown building where Mussolini worked. There is also a picture of us with our Roman guide, Barbara. After Barbara left us in the ancient part of Rome, we made our way to the Spanish steps. Since we all had sore legs, we decided to eat on the second floor of a restaurant overlooking the Spanish Steps. While we were eating, a light rain began so we decided we were definitely not going to climb in the rain. After a slow walk through the streets (after a gelato of course) we made our way back to our hotel for ... read more

After breakfast in the hotel, we walked down Via Settembre to the Santa Maria....Bascilica. This is a beautiful church with amazing art and surprise, a lot of information on Galelio. Fortunately we had purchased umbrellas the afternoon before and we used them on our drizzly stroll. In the afternoon, we were driven to the next county-the Vatican. While we had overcast skys all day, it didn't rain in the afternoon. I guess it was worth lighting the candle in church this morning. I don't think I can begin to describe the beauty of St Peter's Square and the Sistene Chappel. To see work by Raphael, Michaelangelo, and Bernini to name a few-well, it was just incredible. How can one describe being surrounded by the m of theasterpieces of the greatest artists of the Baroque and Renaissance? Pictures ... read more
