Oh dear, today was our last day and it was both great and sad. At lunch, whenever someone leaves they get a goodbye so today we were beckoned to the front and had to say a few words then the kids all stood up and copied Pheap as he said goodbye on their part. Thankyou for your time and good luck but said in a kind of hilarious way. Then we got lots of hugs and some of the kids came up to give goodbye hugs. Hard not to cry, it's been such a short time but we've become pretty attached to some of the kids. At the beginning I remember wondering how on earth I'd remember all their names and now it seems fine. At one we went 'skiing'. Which translates into rollerblading at a ... read more

We have 5 days left here. Don't understand where time has gone. It's been so amazing I really don't want to leave. What's happened recently? This morning we returned from Kampot. We left on Sunday in two groups, our van left in the morning and we got to Kampot a couple of hours later. Found a cool place called Boddhi Villas on the river and spent a while at the bar with coffee wondering how to spend the day and investigating their 66000 song playlist. We ended up hiring three motorbikes for me, Lu and Samia, while Morgan and Priya shared a tuk tuk. The ride was incredible. I had a driver called Sery who was a whole lot hilarious and had the most ridiculous laugh. He recounted relationship traumas including the time his girlfriend trampled ... read more

Time passes far too quickly here. Can't believe it's already Thursday. Monday morning, stayed down on the beach till sunrise, the most beautiful thing. A grey sky, but an amazing contrast of light, the air was cool, very few people were up and colourful boats were bobbing in the bay. Slept out on the balcony and woke marginally sunburnt. Then a few of us spent the afternoon at the pool by Utopia eating pesto pasta. Amongst other things. Spent last night in an aircon room next door, with Jo and Katie with rather great pizza, watching Vicky Christina Barcelona. Like a tiny CCPP slumber party. Am Regent School Goer on the roster this week. Regent school being a nearby English school which one volunteer goes to each afternoon. Quite daunting when you first walk in and ... read more

Today's been amazing. Began with an incredibly hectic morning, seems it's a Sunday thing.. 8 am start and lots of kids showing up. Which meant a lot of kids wanting pencils and paper and shrilly yelling eraser. With less pleases today. One of the girls brought in a baby (brother) who is, apparently, terrified of westerners so everytime one of us was too near we'd get shooed away to avoid making the baby burst into tears. Tensions were rising, lots of yelling and slightly aggressive. I was on handing out boards and had a tonne of hands shoving boards into my face to get their name and details written up. Each board gets a name number, gender and age written onto it to keep track of who sells their work. Then it was Sunday games. Ishvan ... read more

Cambodia. We've already been here 10 days. So so so.. It's quite a different thing, not being on the move, waking up in the same place each morning and knowing the people around you. It's actually pretty nice. We're volunteering at a place called CCPP -Cambodian Children's Painting Project. It's something I had quite a lot of trouble describing before we got here. It's an NGo organisation set up to keep kids off the beach and in a safe place. The beach here is filled with hawkers, lots of them kids. Sihanoukville's certainly a strange place.. it's a mix of extreme affluence and poverty. The place is overrun with tourists so there are a lot of bars and clubs and also everything is quoted in US dollars. It's expensive. There are huge problems here with paedophilia ... read more

Final day. So it makes sense I'm on the computer. Though not for long. We left the city of Ho (that sounds peculiar) on a tour bus ashamedly. the ordeal of trying to get motorbike drivers was too great. The guide was named "Dong" or 'dom dom dom like a drum" and enjoyed the sound of his own voice a fair amount too much. It was like the history trip last year, a microphone held hostage by constant comment and jokes only the Drum found amusing. But he was great anyway for a while. Our 'schedule' was turned into song which it seemed was amusing until the fourth time. By that point everyone was too aware they would be taking breakfast at 6.30 and walking to a market. It was the sort of tour on which ... read more

Ho Chi Minh's amazing! The city that is. HAve had two days here and it has such an awesome feel to it. Really bustling and lively. Definately the capitalist hub of Vietnam, full of boulevards lined with Versace and boutiques. Before leaving Mui Ne we finally tracked down 'Joe's Cafe' which we were told was great and had a cat called Moses. SAid it was the art cafe of Mui Ne and it was filled with couches and plants and great food. Found Moses napping in the bathroom corner, moment of panic when she refused to stir but turned out all was well. Ah yes and very nearly missed our bus on account of a grilled vegetable sandwich. Stayed the first night in a hotel three floors up tucked in an alley. Thought we'd found ourselves ... read more

It happens to be sunburn city here. Second day in Nha Trang we went snorkelling which was nice even if what we were looking at was rather so so. We had a guide whose catch phrase was 'why not?'- a common one. Others include lucky lucky, you buy from me, free to look, same same but different. And 'happy hour'.. for anything. The water was incredibly beautiful, both turqouise and a deep blue and we spent the day on a boat going from bay to bay snorkelling, swimming and lying on the deck slash jumping off the deck. With an elaborate spread put on at lunch. Feeling incredibly sunned up and exhausted once more and am back to having forgotten what's happened the last few days. The next day in Nha Trang we had a breakfast ... read more

It must be pointed out that at 10.24pm, a fair amount sleep deprived and a lot amount sunned on, really quite tired. Thus can't remember events very much at all. We got a train from Hue to Hoi An a fair few days a go now and did a combination of consuming sesame snacks and watching the coast, very lovely. Hoi An, it turns out, is very 'picturesque' although a place in which I took very few photos I later realised. Our initial distraction was the number of tailors scattered through the streets and more so the shoe makers. Choose the material, shape, colour, everything then put your feet on a piece of paper to have them drawn. Pulled ourselves away from such shops after a while and headed to a cafe with fairylights for dinner. ... read more

Play by play commences here. Dreaded bus pulled up and showed itself to be a tiny miracle. It was a different sort of bus! As opposed to bus with reclining chairs this wonder had something similar to beds. Though designed for people of a slightly smaller size perhaps, it was a definate upgrade. Even did some sleeping. So we arrived in Hue yesterday morning and found a place down an alley. Then proceeded to find a great cafe across from us with graffiti/ messages all over the wall. Spent yesterday wandering about the city, went to (Dong Ha) market and were bombarded with calls of "madam madam you buy from me" and although we did have intentions of buying nothing was bought. Having been impressed with my underpacking it's now posing as more of a problem ... read more
