Hi Sweetie, Although I received your postcard today, I imagine that you have been in Vietnam for a while. Have a wonderful time meeting new people, experiencing the culture and beauty of this far away land. And always remember to put safety first! I think I speak for your entire fanclub when I say that we want more! More blog entries and pics, of course. It's addictive. Miss you much! Love, Mom

Finally a posting. You had me worried. Good to hear that you're still adventuring and having such experiences...both good and not so good, but hey, that's what life's all about...we're all graduates of the School of Experience. Keep 'em coming and may you have a joyful Christmas whereever you are...I know this is not politically correct but sorry, that's how I feel. Love you and miss you....G Judy

Awesomeness again! That was a hell of a lot of teking you did! The bamboo bed sounds horrible...i may have employed a lay-out-over-my-pack manuver...even if it would mean i was sleeping like a some strange litter of puppies. (i went with puppies, due to the puppy theme) So do you have a general plan as to where you are headed? Or just a "where the wind blows you" type of thing? it sound damn incredible! Im diggin that couple's plan too! The- work three years, travel for a year...i shall be thinking more about that! Oh, and that link didnt work for me for some reason. I'll try again... All in all, sounds fuggin amazing! Yay for you and your crew!

Get some sleep - From: I made it....
Glad to hear you made it there. Sounds like you might be suffering from jetlag. Get you some good sleep and rest....even you "20ish" adults need to rest at times. You'll feel better and ready to begin your adventure with renewed engergy. BTW...if you meet anymore Brits...tell them you're a TEXAN! They might be intrigued because some of them still think Texas is the wild west where guys go around with six-shooters, ride wild horses and have gunfights....no concept of 21st century Texas. Anyway, get caught up on your sleep so you can experience this adventure. Take care of yourself please....and like I said before....I'm just an old grandma but I'll be praying for you at all times while you're so far away. Love you mucho....G Judy

Awwww you're feeling lonely candice? Poor thing! Never forget that there are people over here in the dirty American land stoked for you, and eagerly waiting your exploration and reports! I think it will probably take a little while to settle in, i mean Shoot...its a whole NEW world over there. Just like Jasmine said. Just the jet lag alone has got to be tough. But, you'll regather yourself soon chick! And when you do...TONS of adventure is waiting you there! I am so impressed with your bravery and adventure. Namaste candice. Now find someplace comfy, safe, and warm...grub...sleep...smile...and meditate until you are ready to take that place on full force. Sending lots of warm non-lonely vibes your way chick!!

COLORADO!! - From: Costa Rica
Hi Candace! IT'S GREAT TO HEAR FROM YOU! i haven't seen you all in a while. and now's the best time to be looking for an adventure, because we're going on one, starting this friday night or saturday morning- about 5 of us are taking the veggie bus to the National Rainbow Gathering in Nederlands, Colorado! It is already going on; we plan to be there around the 26, and stay until the 5th. the 4th is the BIG holiday there. i'm sure we've talked about rainbow before, right? more info on wikipedia. aggghhhhh!!! we're getting so excited. our first! so if you want to caravan, we'll be through austin early saturday morning, or we can set whatever up. ya'll are welcome to jump onto the veg-bus if you'd like to! although it may behoove us to have a scout vehicle along. anyway, think it over! oh, and if you want to go to costa rica, i have some friends who have a jungle farm there, all permacultured out. they said we can visit whenever we want, and live there. they actually are looking for caretakers while they're travelling, goddarnitt, and asked me to find some. if you guys are interested. we're headed to costa rica sometime too! thinking about getting some land in a few years. i'm glad to hear from you. and to see your exploding military frump picture! haha! Zoo - From: Houston Zoo
Hey Candice...glad you enjoyed your trip to the Houston Zoo....did you go to the snake house? That was always the scariest place I found when we would go to the zoo. Course, I'm sure they've changed the whole zoo layout since we visited the zoo with your Mom and David. Houston has a good zoo but the best I've ever attended was the Breckenridge Zoo in San Antonio...it was great and the animals had lots of room to roam....and of course that's probably changed since the 70s. Anyway, glad you had a good time and the pictures are very good....you're turning into a knowledgeable photographer with a discerning eye toward your subject. Take care....email me or better yet....come north across the Red River! Love you....G Judy

you are in reality - From: Six Days
Im sorry grandma judy, no disrespect but candice is in reality NOW! Texas isnt reality..home isnt reality. now is reality *wink*. I know you know that candice, but I also know you struggle (like i do) about appreciating the now. Like you said in your post "Why is it so hard to be happy? Why does it seem so impossible to appreciate where you are while you are there, instead of after you've left?". I wish i could find the secret key that would just allow us to say- "shit...this exact moment is AWESOME". I think because that is near impossible is why i like to document things- because everything up until this moment...and this one...and this one...is a memory. My entire life is a memory, and being human i have the damnable ability to be flawed- including my memories. Documenting things then sort of brings more truth to those memories and therefore my life (i hope). But you did have an excellent adventure, and if you can trust yourself on that- being that you are the actual adventurer in the non-now delema- then trust your observers (like me and grandma). haha! I look forward to seeing you guys and hearing your stories. I hope you can come on by corpus before austin! Much love, chica!

I bet a lot of young adults wish that they could have done what you guys did in 1/2 the time. You now have memories that you can always share that I bet others around you could not. Congratulations! Guess all good things must come to an end and alas....back to Texas and reality....but you'll have tons of memories about this trip. The Texas Gulf Coast sounds like a good place to live if you want to be near water...of course I'm sure the Pacific makes the Gulf look like a down and out cousin. Keep safe on the trip back. Sorry to hear you're ailing.....chicken soup is always good for a cold and I bet you'd find lots of chickens running around...only trouble is you'd have to catch them, wring their necks, dress them out and cook the soup...instead, drink lots of juices (if you can find them), stay warm and you might even fix a hot-toddy...they're a cure-all for a cold! You can't stay feeling bad...there's too many adventures waiting for you......get well quick! I'll have a hot toddy for you! Love ya....G Judy

HOLY CRAP!! - From: And the Gods of Adventure Smiled Down...
Wow freaking wow. Very excellent! Now thats a fucking adventure! I, unlike the other commentors, would have love to seen that dead goat in a wheel chair...i know that disapointment of not being able to capture those unique moments on film...but perhaps you guys can draw a rendition and then take a photo of it! haha! Wow, I wish Chris and I were with you guys on that one. Well- the whole thing sounds like an amazing adventure. I would have loved to have to suffer the hell of that hike- i completely undestand your wish to not have that truck come by. A wet tented night sound painful but...enlightening. i love your brain candice! Im really glad you posted those picture, it is a completely different world to me. So seeing those photos are awesome. And man- what a great bonding experience that must have been for you and james! HAHA! I cracked up about the retelling of the Star Wars Trilogy- that is hilarious!! Hell Yeah James! Anyway- you totally "deserve" that rest now! I hope your feet arent too blistered. You should take some photos if they are! Enjoy your rest my friend!

What an adventure! You guys are surely the bravest couple I know! Thanks for not taking a picture of the dead goat.....I have a mental picture of it and it's not pretty. The waterfall was beautiful and the whole countryside is so green. HOpe you brought an extra pair of shoes for these adventures...sounds like you'll need them. That's another world down there for sure. Guess you have discovered that there are jerks in very culture but at the same time there are friendly, courteous and caring people also. The jerks think all people who live north of the Rio Grande are millionaires and they take advantage of the tourists....those kind of people will be judged one day for their greed. Anyway, enough of that. Rest up and go to the next big adventure...it's right around the corner somewhere. Love you....Grandma Judy

'... wheelchair sitting there with a fully grown, dead, male goat sitting upright in it..." That is the funniest thing I've read in a long while. I'm glad I didn't see a picture of it, as your short description was enough for a great mental picture!!! Thanks! I love you both, Toni

The photos you've taken are so good. The photo of the sunset (both of them) are beautiful. Did the crab end up on the dinner table? Hope not. So glad you're feeling better about the trip and are ready to meet the challenges ahead. You'll do fine and so will James. It's good that you've met some other young explorers down there. All of you will have a great time...a once in a lifetime experience and like someone commented...something to tell your future kids. You and James are truly a retro 60's generation! Have fun and drink one for me and my neighbor! Looking forward to the next entry. Love ya....G Judy

Tragic! - From: Sol Escondido
Wow candice, what an incredibly aware mind you have! I can completely understand your situation, and I see it as a tremendous tragedy! Though my dreams of culture and primitive existence that I was living through you guys is a bit dashed, it is so intelligent of you to recognize what is going on there (and beautifully written too). Isn't it true though, that no place is really what we want it to be completely? It seems though, that you have found some things- like jewlery making, cheap food and drinks, beautiful buildings and temples, surfing...just remember that this adventure will be a memory one day. And though you may see it as a let down- think about telling your kids about it in the future- they're going to love it. That culture is the culture that exists- distorted and westernized as we may think it is. Shitty but true...I know you guys will make something meaningful of it.

Great photos. James must have discovered a long lost twin down there. I guess you cant go anywhere in the world without the American influence...the commercialism there is probably like anywhere else on this planet. According to a site I visited on the net, the town used to be a sleepy little fishing village until they built a highway from through it and people discovered the quaint little fishing village and things have never been the same. I would hope that somewhere in this world there are unspoiled places where life is simple and people haven't been corrupted by 21st century consumerism. I hope you are able to find such a place somewhere in Mexico. In the meantime..enjoy the beautiful scenery and the Mexican food and beverage! Miss you and love you.....G Judy

Hey Surfer Girl - From: Photos Phinally!
You're trip sounds FANTASTIC Candice. The place on the beach definitely sounds like PARADISE and all your adventures getting there were so much fun to read, too! For the last year I have been trying to improve my Spanish and this site has some helpful articles and lessons http://spanish.about.com/. Nothing like being immersed to really learn though! Good luck with the surfing too- sounds like SO much fun! Looking forward to your next entry. Angie

Hey Sweetie, - From: Map and Peyote and Things
Hello from sunny California (Santa Clara county)!!! I think that I found a new location that I want to live. The climate is absolutely perfect and scenery beautiful. I'm sorry that your experience wasn't what you expected...But you don't need that stuff anyway! There are many free photo sites but they usually will only allow up to 50 meg. Try myphotoalbum.com. I have not used it before. Be sure to shrink your photos prior to loading so that you can fit as many as possible. Hope the sun comes....I want to see the waters of the Pacific side of Mexico. Hugs and kisses.... Love, MOM

You know, I've been to Oaxaca twice. Go see the Tule tree in Tule and Monte Alban. Restaurant Naranjo (if it's still there) south of the Zocalo is fantastic. Go see some shops with the wood carvings. World famous.
