There were some pretty bad storms in the last few days. Our dean told us it was the worst weather they've had in july since the beginning of weather recording!! Lots of people were killed due to mudslides in mountains and Gangnam (a few subway stops from me) was pretty badly affected. SNU was fine, we are all safe but classes were cancelled and exams were all a bit muddled. We survived though and I hope the country picks itself up soon. The rain has stopped for the moment and it's gradually getting better. On lighter news I graduated yesterday! Was quite daunting, thinking about how fast the last 5 weeks have gone but i'm so excited for the next two and spending it with sam ... read more

ok so the last few days have been much more chilled then the previous couple of weeks. everything is slowing down and everyone is pretty tired, but graduation is soon and hopefully we'll be going out to somewhere like hongdae or itaewon to celebrate :) last night i went to a dog cafe in hongdae (although we got off a stop before). apparently its on the seoul tourist website so it's pretty popular, more white people in there then in the cat cafe in hongdae i went to in the first few weeks. i'm so used to weird and wonderful things, and the dog cafe just felt completely normal. a cafe (3 floors up) that was full of dogs. big, small, fat, friendly, naughty. there were corgis and huskeys and labs, everything! it was free to ... read more

I've done most of the obligatory touristy things now, went to Gongbukgung Palace which was beautiful. There was a nice contemporary art gallery next to it which had this American art exhibition on. Very good. We went to the cultural centre which had lots of interactive exhibits on about various past leaders of Korea. Also very good. Then... WE WENT TO SEOUL ZOO. It was pretty quiet (probably because of the MONSOON) but we braved it out, and there were spurts of sunshine every now and again so it wasn't so bad. I wouldn't recommend the sky lift if you're on a budget. We saved quite a lot by just walking to the top. Plus you want to stop and take pictures right? The whole day cost me well under 10,000W which is amazing (about £5.80?) ... read more

Ok so HARRY POTTER. The place that we went to see it was Megabox in Coex, a large shopping centre that has everything in. Didn't cry but was sad that it's all ended. We went to Mnet Countdown which for people who are not familiar with k-pop (or Korean pop) is a sort of Top of the Pops, variety show type thing. Each band or singer had one or two songs they performed which was quickly succeeded by the next band or singer. It was filmed in a reasonably small studio where it was aired live and then people at home would phone in. Whoever got the most votes would then sing their song again. It was a really good way to have a quick snap shot of the k-pop scene, who was current and who ... read more

I'm looking out onto the amazing view of Seoul from my dorm window and gently tending to the hundred of bites I've got from bugs in the last few days. A friend lent me this itch reliever which is amazing, although I put it on one of the bites on my face and now it's making my eyes water. arhhhhh. The weather is so up and down, so I've been catering for all situations. I bought some flip flops from the uni convenient store for 3000W and wear them everywhere now. I also carry around an umbrella for both rain and shine. Hopefully it'll just get hot in the next few days so I don't stress out every time I leave my room. So yesterday we went to Namdaemun (or as I like to call it ... read more

Ok, so classes are going well, I'm learning a lot about Korean culture and how the education system works. In politics I'm learning so much about Chinese philosophical thought and how it relates to modern government. Today we discussed Laozi in comparison to Mencius and Xunxi. Pretty deep. The impression I'm getting, from the students in my class, is that if you're not smart and if you don't work hard, you're a nobody. We were discussing the grade B+ - I didn't say anything but they implied that if they got a B+ it would be a pretty poor grade. Maybe that's because I'm attending a pretty good school in Korea, but the stress that's put on these students... wow I don't envy them. Saying that though, they're all super cultured and into international politics. From ... read more

Cat Cafe- Located near Hongdae station, exit 7? If you want to go write down cat cafe in korean and there will be many students hanging about the station willing to show you to it (as we experienced a few days ago!). Anyway after a few hours of searching and getting lost we finally get the right subway stop and right alleyway and find the cafe of cats (n.b opens at 1pm!). We walk in and yes, we are inundated with cute. Overwhelmed by kitty love. it cost us a mere 8000W to hang out at the cafe and this also included a drink- I went for iced tea, Tina went for green tea latte. Ohhhhh how I was wooed by the charm of the kittens. I was surrounded by 15 year old girls, infatuated by ... read more

Ok, so at the weekend we went to Jeon-ju, about 4 hours drive from Seoul to look around Hanok Village. It was quaint and quiet and full of charm. We had a look around 16th century schools, surrounded by mountains and greenery (so jealous) and went to the Jeon-ju culture centre to do some 'experimental activities'. I picked 'musical instrument' and we ended up playing the Korean Drum Janggu, with two types of sticks. It was so fun, and the teacher was fun although he spoke no English. I came to realise very quickly that music is universal and there is no need for language. Some people got to cook Bibimbap, which we had for lunch earlier in the day. Bibimbap is a traditional Korean meal with lots of veg, an egg and rice on the ... read more

Ok so my classes are 9-12 and 1-4 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. This means a lot of food to be consumed so I don't pass out in the middle of a lecture. I'll start with the chocolate. There is loads of Asian chocolate that reminds me of Japan. One in particular is Crunky. Oh my gosh those Crunky bars are amazing. I feel like I haven't missed snacking between meals, maybe because there's little time to eat and by the time I finish lessons I'm so tired I just want to sleep, or drink. One thing that differs Western food from Korean is the amount you get for your money. 3000W (about £1.70) gets me a good meal from the canteen. It usually consists of a plate of meat, rice, soup and several small side ... read more
