We actually spent day 9 in 3 cities/towns. And 3 very lazy but photogenic towns at that. Woke up in Hoi An, spent the first half of the day in Danang and ended the day in Hue. It was still raining when we woke up so there goes our plans on exploring Hoi An before our shuttle picked us up for our 10:00 bus. But what a waste it was. Since the Japanese bridge was pretty nearby, we decided to pay it a visit (What? That's it? Luckily they didn't charge money!) Well, actually we're not sure if they did, because [View Full Entry]

Minh Quang - Hoi An

Eating leftover baguette on my bed
We arrived Hoi An early in the morning before 07:00. As we have now headed central, we could feel that the temperature had significantly fell. It was also drizzling. Cold and wet Hoi An = not good :( Hoi An is the only place where we spent the most time walking around lugging our backpacks looking for accomodation. Everything was so much more expensive here (Even some dodgy smelly guesthouses wanted to charge USD12-15) We must have been walking around the town for close to 2 hours, inspecting hotel after hotel and finally settled for Minh Quang hotel (USD10) located on [View Full Entry]

Despite the chaotic events prior to boarding the bus, it was a rather comfortable journey. Managed to sleep! Well, it was either that, or risk being a zombee by tomorrow after a 9 hours odd journey :) Arrived Nha Trang at around 06:00. Initially, we had groggily walked towards the wrong side of town, we were supposed to walk towards the beach not away from it. And while heading in the right direction, we were stopped by yet another Mr Moto, who offered to take us to a nice cheap hotel. After awhile we obliged. We checked out the room - [View Full Entry]

It was our last day in Saigon. So we decided to sleep in a bit late. Pressed snooze many times (as usual) This was supposed to be a holiday, not training camp for goodness' sake :P Breakfast at Pham Ngu Lao alleys- why bother going so far? While we were searching for food, we came across a stall selling creme caramel owned by a supersweet supernice lady :) We ordered one each (total 4000D) and watched as she prepared them individually. It was no ordinary caramel pudding as she topped it with concentrated Vietnamese coffee. She also showed us how to [View Full Entry]

Day 5 started with breakfast in the alley outside our guesthouse. We had coffee (10,000 D) and shared a plate of fried instant nudels (10,000D). This meal was to sustain us for the very long (motorcycle) journey to Cu Chi Tunnels and back. We had done a little "research" the night before at the internet cafe, on the distance of Cu Chi Tunnels from HCMC. The sources vary from 25-90 km (we all <3 the WWW) ... And so we thought, what the heck, it can't be that far away. We won't get lost we'll just follow the buses and/or stop [View Full Entry]

Goodbye Phnom Penh

A busy street
We woke up early on Day 4 to do some last minute shopping at the Russian Market before boarding our 09:00 bus to Ho Chi Minh. Had our signature Cambodian breakfast of yaucharkwai and coffee. Though we have not gone on much of a phood adventure while in Cambodia, it appears to us that the Khmers like their food sweet. The lady who sat next to us during breakfast confirmed this by scooping a tablespoon full of sugar into her bowl of beef noodles >.< Did not buy much. Haggling can be tiring and time consuming. Rushed back to check-out / [View Full Entry]

Day 3. Our shuttle was to pick us up at 06:10 for our 07:00 bus. We were at a nearby coffeeshop getting yaucharkwai and coffee to go, when we heard our shuttle bus honking for us at Mandalay Inn (I had almost forgotten to mention that upon arrival in Cambodia, it appears that everyone honks at everyone and everything, BUT the worse has yet to come. Wait til you get to Saigon ;) The bus ride from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh was uneventful, and they were mostly playing music videos of local pop star, usually featuring a male involved in [View Full Entry]

Cleaner room, bright funky colours, happy Bwooie :)
Day 2 started off a little late. We checked out of Green Garden Home at 05:00 am, moved our stuff to Mandalay Inn and hoped to catch the sunrise. Unfortunately, our little bicycle gave us some problems. To cut the story short, no sunrise for the day :( We walked halfway towards Angkor again, and got on a tuktuk which took us to Ta Prohm (Favourite temple# 2!) The silk cotton trees and strangler figs intermingled on the ruins provides the temple an excellent atmosphere for exploration (probably the reason it was used as a location in the film Tomb Raider?) Can't believe we're here! *wheeeee* :D
After 4 dreadful months, the long anticipated day finally arrived! After a night of fitful sleep (if any) we boarded Air Asia Flight AK 846 at 07:00 for Siem Reap. We arrived 2 hours later, to find that it was 08:00 local time *moment of jakun-ness* Jayne excitedly adjusts her watch, as it was her first time outside the +8GMT time zone :D After checking in and having breakfast, we headed for the temples of Angkor. And so it begins... Heroic Feat #1 - Walking to Angkor Wat. (And I mean walking...) It all started with the adamant determination not to [View Full Entry]
