| 28th April 2008 dmax | Jaisalmer Fort Controversy - From: The Land of Kings Hi, thanks for the link about the controversy with Jaisalmer Fort. I didn't know there was a controversy at all, I heart it was pretty unequivocal: don't stay in the fort! I'm under the impression the infrastructure - especially water supply and waste removal - aren't up to the modern demands, which makes sense to me. Sure, there's an economic drawback for those who have businesses in the fort, but I was very comfortable eating all meals and shopping in the fort while sleeping outside. David |
| 28th April 2008 dmax | Thanks for the clarification on Jodhpur - From: The Land of Kings Thanks ... I'll be sure to update my text. Hope you caught the reference, it's a line from the original star wars movie! david |
| 19th March 2008 brick | To Stay or Not To Stay at Jaisalmer Fort? - From: The Land of Kings There's been alot of controversy over whether to stay or not stay in the Fort. It's eroding from increased water usage and tourists are contributing to the problem. Check out this link, it shows the different viewpoints so you can make a more educated decision. http://beta.flowgram.com/fgshare/FLOxsnFr/ Happy Travels! |
| 11th March 2008 Dushyant | its in the Heart of Jodhpur - From: The Land of Kings Dear David I am from Jodhpur I was just looking at you pictures and in on of your pictures from Jodhpur it says "That's no moon, it's a space station! I mean, that's no hill, it's a space station! (actually, it's a fort on the hilltop just outside of Jodhpur) Just thought you should know that Jodhpur Fort is Situated in the Heart for the town right in the middle of the city its not outside of jodhpur.. |
| 17th September 2007 Jennifer | Great Update - From: Sunday Night in September What an amazing journey. I love the close-up of the rhino, the bird-through-binoculars shot, and the numerous chimpanzees. Enjoy your time there. Kudos for making a difference to those children. Best of luck for continued success. |

| 5th June 2007 Melanie | Living in the present - From: Last Days in Dar Hi David - Your updates help to keep me involved, even vicariously, in the world of travel and international relations - when my current life is so entrenched in the world of high tech San Francisco. And, for that I thank you! :) As you can imagine, helping a client get coverage in a newspaper or tech magazine pales dramatically when I hear tales of planting mangroves or doing something else that directly helps the planet. Please keep me posted - one of these days, I'll be back on the road again! :) Hugs, Melanie |
| 5th June 2007 gretchen seifert | Keep em coming - From: Last Days in Dar I'm certainly enjoying your updates, D. Good luck on your next chapter. Gretchen |
| 3rd June 2007 Jennifer | Bon Voyage! - From: Last Days in Dar D - Great review of the time in Dar es Salaam. Best of luck with the next part of your journey. It looks like you'll have more great adventures. We had a great time when Angel and Erik came back to visit. Perhaps we'll even make a 2nd trip to TZ next year. Happy trails! |
| 3rd June 2007 Katie Trelstad | From a fellow traveller - From: Last Days in Dar Say there D... thanks for the email you sent a few weeks ago, and finally a new blog update. I remember reading bloyour blog entry about you meeting Jane Goodall back when I was still in the US. That seems so long ago now. Time flies when you're having fun. Travis and I are here in Northeastern Thailand if you get a hankerin for a weekend trip. Come visit us! I hear flights are 6 hours from where you are. Peace brother. |
| 1st June 2007 Cousin Jacqui | Thanks! - From: Habari Za Safari David, we're so proud of you! (Grandma Amy beamed when telling me what you were up to.) Although the negatives seem overwhelming at times, remember that everything you do spreads ripples, not only where you are locally, but also back here at home. Your words alone inspire many, many others to action. Be safe and keep passing on the goodness! |
| 22nd April 2007 Bart | Thanks for the story ! - From: Saadani Safari I really enjoyed reading your post here on Saadani. We will be visiting this lodge in August but found very little info on it. Your explanations and pictures helped us to visualise the experience and sounds really good. Good luck with your future plans ! |
| 14th April 2007 dmax | to subscribers ... - From: Saadani Safari Sorry I accidentally sent this one out to you twice. In any case, it looks like the email system is back up and running! |
| 22nd February 2007 Lee Ann | you are an inspiration! - From: One month in Tanzania with a bunch of colts photos! "All life is an adventure" - David Cook, summer 2006 atop the space needle at sunset. |
| 3rd February 2007 Satya | Reggie knows the score! - From: Tanzania Week One (Colts Won) and Week Two To David Douglas-Fir and all the Colts fans who read this blog: Here's a score prediction from someone you know and love courtesy of CNN.com's "Celebrity Super Bowl Picks": Reggie Miller, TNT broadcaster and former Pacer | Colts 31, Bears 17. GO COLTS!!! Satya |
| 31st January 2007 Melanie | The Colts are in the Super Bowl? - From: Tanzania Week One (Colts Won) and Week Two Hi David! As always great to hear about what you are doing. I was confused about one thing. Is it really true the Colts are in the Super Bowl? ??? ;) Just kidding! Thought, I must admit, I didn't know until about one week ago. Seriously - the only section of the newspaper I don't read is the sports section. Well, and automotive. Maybe real estate too, as I don't have a chance in SF. :) All the best! Melanie :) |
| 26th January 2007 Katie Koala | Getting ready for India - From: India, Africa, and the Indianapolis Colts Say man, I just finished reading all your past blog entries after getting your email last week. Your blog history took me three hours to get through, as I fluxed waxing and waning from laughter to tears. I aspire to write with your well blended 1-2 punch combo of insight and sass! Anyhoo- Travis and I are leaving for India in a month and are taking your blog entries to heart in planning our trip. Yikes... the pre-travel suspense is building... |
| 25th January 2007 Maddi Moose | What now? - From: India, Africa, and the Indianapolis Colts Well David, reading your entry made my mouth water for sure. And now I am wondering what is going on right now. Well, I think you are sleeping right now. No, that would have been India time. Oh, anyway, how are you adjusting? I have some desperately cute pictures of you and Tallis making out at Lower Lena Lake that I will soon post on my blog for you to glance at and get a kick out of. You two make the cutest couple. Miss you alot. Hoping for all kinds of goodness to surround you this next year. Much love. |
| 22nd January 2007 Mike & Dayna | Dude. - From: COLTS WIN!!!! Amazing game. And Dayna and I said, "You totally know Dave Cook is up watching this". Woot! |
| 17th January 2007 Tracy | - From: India, Africa, and the Indianapolis Colts wow, I don't get to read your blogs that often but when I do I'm so overwhelmed by the awesome organized record keeping you're doing! You're almost as OCD when it comes to details as me! I hope you keep having a fabulous time and although Philly can feel like a crazy foreign place to me, it has nothing on the great sites you've been seeing. P.S. My friend in Cameroon, Africa is having some homesickness troubles. Can you swing by during your free time and keep her company? Thanks! |
| 15th January 2007 Rob Kaplan aka the Unkle | Chapter 1 ending - From: India, Africa, and the Indianapolis Colts David, What an awsome recap of India. I ever though I wanted to go to India until now. You damn near had me misty eyed at your lovely conclusion until espn wiggled in there! I will be thinking about you and Tanzania while I am skate skiing in snowy 20 degree wheather. Ciao, Rob |
| 15th January 2007 Satya | I rooted for...the Colts!!! - From: COLTS WIN!!!! Don't worry, David Douglas-Fir! I did not yield to the Dark Side, otherwise known as the Baltimore Ravens, who are now drowning their misery in the "faint and dying ember" of a "midnight dreary" awaiting "surcease of sorrow" (courtesy of Edgar Allan Poe, of course) after yesterday's loss. I cheered for the team that always has the Force when it takes the field--the Colts! I am thrilled for the Colts, but I am even happier you got to watch the game in Mumbai. What a way to plan your trip! Can't wait to hear where you are when the Colts WIN the Super Bowl! As the Colts abide, Satya Slug |
| 14th January 2007 Jon | Nappptown baby!!!!!!!! - From: COLTS WIN!!!! That was quite an interesting game. I think they should have interviewed adam first though. Peyton didn't even score and they went rushing up to him!!! |
| 14th January 2007 DMC-TZ1 | Yes yes - From: COLTS WIN!!!! That's awesome--AWESOME--that you were up all night watching the Colts. I love it. I *want* the Patriots. Bring on the Patriots. |
| 14th January 2007 Benjie | Yessssssss - From: COLTS WIN!!!! Wow. Talk about loyalty!! Get ready for another all-nighter next weekend. |
| 12th January 2007 dmax | clarification ... - From: The Pelnultimate India Blog Actually, Melanie's right, Palolem is still the idyllic, secluded beach to visit when you want to get away from the Goa party crowds .... I guess in my mind, that makes it "the most famous!" |
| 11th January 2007 Jenny Coyle | Awesome blogging - From: The Pelnultimate India Blog David -- This is my first comment on all of your most excellent trip reports. I just want you to know that I appreciate all the updates and details, and also the fact that you include pictures of yourself! I LOVE seeing your happy face in all these cool places. What a mind-blowing trip you're having. Gadzooks are you a lucky guy. And you haven't even hit Africa yet!!! Shelb and I leave for New Zealand in two weeks. We'll spend a week with my sis in Wellington and then hit the South Island with a rental car. It's an abbreviated trip by your standards (3.5 weeks), but I'm HUGELY looking forward to it. Continue the great writing and photography! This blog is a blessing! A gift! Best, Jenny |
| 11th January 2007 Melanie | Palolem - From: The Pelnultimate India Blog Hi David! So, Palolem is now the "most famous beach in Goa" huh? So much changes so fast in India - I'm stunned! When I was there - 3 years ago now - Palolem was the place you went to get a way from the most famous beaches in Goa. But then I think Matt Damon filmed part of his Boune Identity there? Not sure which one - maybe the second one? Anyway, glad you are having fun and you found that beach - I would have recommended it to you if you had asked! ;) I have fond memories of rising at dawn and doing yoga, and lots of writing. Sigh - I wish I was there right now! Take care, Melanie |

| 11th December 2006 Nicole | Poor Bambi! - From: Tiger Safari Dave--thank you for sharing. It's so cool to see your photos, to have a taste of life outside America. We've moved to Winthrop, WA, for a more simplistic lifestyle and to delve more deeply into a small community. Just today I saw two coyotes, an eagle, a ton of deer, and a fox...but nothing like what you're seeing, and definitely not poor little tiger-meat bambi. Thank you for including us. We enjoy living vicariously through you. Nicole |

| 1st December 2006 Dave Roos | The Motherland - From: Horn Please I don't know what you're complaining about. The honk and swerve has been serving dangerously aggressive drivers like myself (and my spiritual kinsmen) for centuries. It is truly an art. And if a few tourists in rickshaws have to lose a limb in the process, at least we're making good time. Have a great time and keep the updates coming! dave |
