DAY 20 : REST DAY - FRANZ JOSEPH We had decided that everthing we had needed a wash, which meant we had to figure out a way to wash all our clothes, while still wearing something. In the end i opted for my rain jacket and some shorts. The washing machine survived our overloading of it and i stood around in my shorts trying to act natural. Franz Joseph is known for its glacier 4km out of town. We decided to go and have a look at it, then maybe go for a half day tour if it warrented it. I've never seen anything like it - it looks like i belongs in antarctica or something. What made it even more bizarre was that to get there you walked for a little while through rainforest. We ... read more

DAY 16 : QUEENSTOWN -- WANAKA 81km We decided Queenstown was all a bit touristy for us so we went riding again. As we rode to Arrowtown we came upon an englishman and an american or NZ girl (depending on if you ask me or DV). The englishman was just about to fix a broken spoke - his back wheel was stocked up with gear so it's little wonder something broke. The NZ/american girl was heading the other way. We pushed on as we had a mountain to climb. Arrowtown was nice, but we only stopped to have lunch #1. The ride over Crown Saddle was described as a "stiff" climb in Pedallers' Paradise (the NZ south island cycle touring book you should buy if thinking of cycle touring here). I forgot to take a ... read more

DAY 12 : REST DAY DUNEDIN-- TE ANAU (BUS) Washing in the morning - used our bikes as a clothes line. Went into the city to update blog and see if we could catch a bus to the west side of NZ - we're kind of behind schedule so we figure this should give us a couple of extra days to try and make it North. Everything turned out to be a roaring success, with a bus leaving at 2pm. DV even had time to see if he could get some chocolate from the cadbury factory just across from where we were catching a bus. He would have had to do a tour before he could buy anything which seems stupid. So he went across the street to Countdown (supermarket) and bought 3blocks of cadbury chocolate ... read more

DAY 7 : ASHBURTON - rest day It was perfect riding weather today, but we had decided to rest so we spent the day at the internet cafe, bank, supermarket, 2nd hand bookstore and camping store. DV had conjured up an interesting route for the next leg of the journey to Dunedin. Not wanting to go on Highway 1 for too long DV found some unsealed roads which should get us there and provide some awesome scenery.. After a bit of research today we found you shouldn't ride it except for during summer (according to a book), but then a camping guy told us we'd be fine. So we did a few stealth photographs of the pricey topographical maps (hey, we're on a budget here - plus we still need to make up for the ... read more

April 1st 2005

Ok, so here we are again with a bit of cycle touring, this time i'm off to New Zealand's south island with my friend Daniel Veryard, to be known as DV from here on in. I'm gonna do these entries the same as last, just copying from my diary. Day 1 : Sydney -- Christchurch The early morning start was fun as always. At least this time i was off before 11am, and i wasn't even riding yet. But our take off wasn't without its difficulties. Hauling the bike boxes through the train stations and airport wasn't the easiest "that's some large luggage" noted one of the observant staff at the airport. The check in was a bit of a disaster. I put on my nicest face and DV gave off all his charm, but the ... read more

2005/02 Entry 3 DAY 13 : Cooma - rest day Not much happened today DAY 14 : Cooma -- Bombala ODO: 797km DST: 92.5km MAX: 46km/h The only real thing of note that happened today was when a guy came up to me in Nimitabel and said "g'day, i thought i'd come over and say hello to you, 'cause most ppl don't like to talk to fella's like you - they think you're on the dole and haven't got a job and so you ride your bike because you're too lazy, but i like to talk to you blokes anyway"....hahah...i said "huh?" and then he kind of repeated himself. Anyway, after a few minutes talking i think i may have convinced him that *1* i'm not on the dole and *2* most lazy ppl don't decide ... read more

DAY 1 : Orange -- Trunkey Creek ODO = 79km, DST = 79km, MAX = 51km/h Well, there was a huge rush in the morning trying to get everything sorted out. 2002/02 Entry 3 These three Tasmanian entries will not include an actual travel journal as I don't have the time to go through my notes. What I think are the best pictures have been posted and a few comments here and there kind of tell the story:) ....feel free to ask questions about any part of the trip. Basically DV and myself rode from Launceston to Hobart through the centre of Tassy, then back up to Launceston via the east coast.... read more
