Sorry for the delay, but we have been without internet for a couple of days! This day started fairly early as we had about an hour and forty-five minute drive (about 90 miles) into Chepstow, Wales. The weather was quite dreary when we left, but cleared up as we got closer to the castle. It was a nice day for a walk around. There were very few visitors except for the 2 busloads of youngsters (probably 7 through 9 years of age). They were very well behaved, but still very chatty. We tried to keep our distance from them most of the time. This was not difficult as the castle grounds are fairly large. After leaving the castle, we headed for Kingstone Brewery. We were not able to keep a good signal on our Google Maps, ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Somerset » Minehead June 27th 2017

We decided to take a drive to Minehead. The weather has been pretty dismal (cool and cloudy) for the past couple of days, so we thought we'd head to the coast in search of sun! Ha! We did get a little there, but not much. It was a really pretty drive with winding roads that varied from just above sea level to over 1000'. It was about a 45-minute drive from our cottage. The beach front, in some areas, looked like a tourist spot with all the souvenir shops, gambling joints and eateries. There was also a small amusement park, which we chose not to pursue. :-) We chose to walk over to the harbor where the boats were grounded. I'm sure, on the weekends, that this place is pretty crowded with locals and tourists. I'm ... read more

There was a small house that we noticed on the way to the supermarket. Also, we noticed these plots as we came out of Calais at the beginning of the week, but there were also some just inside Bailleul.... read more

Europe » Belgium » West Flanders » Ypres June 15th 2017

Just a quiet day for a walk around Ypres. Though Ieper is the official name, the city's French name, Ypres is most commonly used in English. During the First World War, Ypres was the center of Battles of Ypres between German and Allied forces. During the war it was nicknamed "Wipers", as its name was difficult for English-speaking British Imperial forces to pronounce. Ypres is an ancient town, known to have been raided by the Romans in the first century BC. It is first mentioned by name in 1066 and is probably named after the river Ieperlee on the banks of which it was founded. During the Middle Ages, it was a prosperous Flemish city with a population of 40,000 in 1200 AD and renowned for its linen trade with England (mentioned in the Canterbury Tales). ... read more

Europe » Belgium » East Flanders » Gent June 14th 2017

This day we headed to Ghent. We knew we wanted to take a boat tour around the city, but weren't exactly sure what else we would do. After walking all over Antwerp the day before, our feet weren't exactly ready for another 4 hour walk. As it turned out, the weather was really warm and we were not dressed appropriately. We really hadn't planned on it being so warm so all our shorts were back in England. We took the 40-minute boat tour, which was very nice, and then headed back to the house for a relaxing afternoon there. A little history on Ghent. It started as a settlement at the confluence of the Rivers Scheldt and Leie in the later middle ages and became one of the largest and richest cities of northern Europe. It ... read more

Europe » Belgium » Antwerp Province » Antwerp June 13th 2017

Left the house a little passed 8 this morning, headed to Antwerp to visit some friends. After a few congested areas of traffic, we arrived our destination. The navigation on the car is incredible. It delivered us right to our friends' front door. Once inside we had a very nice breakfast and caught up a little (of course Gene had just recently seen them at the marina back home). They live "just" on the outskirts of town, so we drove a short distance and parked the car. Our first stop was Gerda's jewelry shop. She is a goldsmith. Both her daughters work in the shop. She has some very unique and beautiful jewelry. The home where the shop is located is 3 stories. The first story is a small shop, the basement is where the melting ... read more

Took off from Ramsden Heath this morning at 8:30am. Got to the chunnel at around 10:00am. Our ticket was for the 11:50am crossing. We walked around a bit, had a sandwich and then headed off for the train. Once in France, we shopped at the wine store in Calais, France. After spending about 175 euros on wine ;-) we headed off for our Belgium destination. After looking at the map of our current location, the France and Belgium border is the road right outside our front door. We're off to Antwerp tomorrow so I'll have more adventures from there. Bye, for now.... read more
