I had given up on the idea of going to china this trip for similar reasons as India, such complex countries need a big chunk of time to even get an idea of what the place and people are about.. However on looking at how to go from Nepal to Mongolia, it was well over $1000 cheaper to go to Beijing first, and if I'm going to Beijing I need to spend at least a small amount of time looking around.. During my everest trek, I met an older guy that gave me the name of a hostel he really recommended in Beijing.. The happy dragon hostel.. And this small tip effected the ten days I spend in Beijing in a way I couldn't have expected. When you arrive in china you quickly learn what is ... read more

"Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime." i am not fully sure how to describe the events that took place yesterday.. i only wish i had my camera.. the day started as most days in kathmandu seem to slightly bored of the place, strolling around the streets iv walked many times during my short stay, when, semi-expectantly i see a man iv spoken to on several occasions, Raksh, a local shoe shine who frequents the thamel area in search of shoes to shine and people to speak english with.. i met Rakesh on my first full day in nepal, at that stage i did not understand the nepali people, it caught me by surprise that when i declined a shoeshine, he asked if ... read more

i now find myself looking at my un-updated travel blog with a certain disappointment at myself, however, i still find it difficult to make the time to sit down and write it.. its often the case that i find myself unwilling to get my camera to take photos of an occasion or sit and write a journal.. its strange, its seems that subconsciously i am too busy enjoying the moment that i perhaps do not want to alter it by doing things that are intended to preserve it.. most of the text below was written nearly 4 months ago with the intention of being blogged straight away.. this didnt happen.. there are 47 photos added with this blog, be sure to click the photos button if they arent all displayed.. the everest region trek was one ... read more

the concept of a place so swimming with rock climbers and climbing culture that you can turn up on your own and the next day be climbing with some really cool people is a new one to me, however it was very welcomed! after two months of pure site seeing, i was pretty burned out.. i guess people, human history and culture arent really my strong points when it comes to staying focused.. again when you are doing one thing every day (climbing rocks) there aren't that many different ways to write about it.. i did however meet some excellent people during my stay, and learnt from, enjoyed the company of, and laughed with some of the most generous, helpful and fun loving travelers i have met to date.. definitely very happy with my time spent ... read more

doing as temples do, there is lots of sitting around being very old and falling apart.. and in being this way inclined it makes them very hard things to write about.. so i spent two days cycling around the temples of Angkor which was a bum bruising experience indeed! but a picture is worth a thousand words? so here are many thousand words on the topic.. =) NOTE: there are two pages of pictures.. make sure you click page two at the bottom!... read more

As soon as you cross the boarder into Cambodia, you instantly notice that this is a very poor country.. i definitely feel for the people here.. they are doing it tough! however, in stark contrast to Vietnam, the people here seem genuinely happy, welcoming and want to share their stories and culture with travelers.. Cambodia, perhaps not wanting to rely on its own unstable monetary system, has made unusual dependence on the use of the US dollar.. you go to an ATM and it will dispense you US dollars.. very quickly you learn that 1USDollar is the smallest US currency, below that, the RIEL (Cambodian currency) is used.. an example would be, to pay for a meal that cost $2.50 you would hand over 2dollars and 2000riel.. i seem to forever have this massive fat wad ... read more

The longer i am in vietnam the more twisted and unsure my perceptions become of this place.. A grim soviet esq feel lingering in the air and a constant battle of personal greed is writhe in the north.. it is saturday morning, our plan at this stage was to get to a hill tribe town called bac ha, 340km away by road in time to see the sunday markets which bring people from different minority tribes from near and far.. shouldnt be too hard id imagine. since we we staying at a hotel we spoke to the woman at the front desk that we had mentioned our plans to when we arrived the night before, she spoke good english and said she would help us.. as we approach she immediately told us she had been ringing ... read more

On flying into the smaller city of hai phong to the north of vietnam, from ho chi minh city we were met at the airport once gain by the expected swarm of dodgy, pushy taxi drivers all willing to try anything to take advantage of an unsuspecting foreigner stepping over and on each other to get you in their taxi, dodgy meters that count too fast, refusing to use a meter, demanding extra fees at the end of the trip.. the fun and games of leaving the airport.. after a bouncy, hair raising bus ride and a good nights sleep it was time to set off to the dock in search of a boat to take us for an overnight cruise on harlong bay.. on entering the "tourist information centre" we were approached by a tall ... read more

So it was quite the disheartening feeling to arrive at the checkin counter in sydney airport to be told you could not check in because you can not provide a document showing you had booked an exit from vietnam.. especially after much research into the fact that vietnam its self does not require this, only jetstar and its archaic international policies.. so the rush was on to get proof! i had 30mins to find a way to prove i was going to leave the country.. after the initial 'WTF DO I DO!?!' moment and looking for bus tickets to laos etc the idea came up to just buy a refundable plane ticket back home.. and it worked a charm! i got back to the desk about 10mins before checkin closed, got checked in and into the ... read more
