It had been exactly one year since I had left Spain. It still seems like a dream, a fairy tale, once upon a time… And a year later I had the opportunity to go back to Europe, but this time to France. Upon arrival in the Nice airport I was flooded with familiar sights and smells. I was back in Europe. I have never felt more at home. My friend Kate, my mom, and I were the first to arrive. My dad had to stay in New York one extra night because the seats were all full. Little did we know that we decided to travel to Nice during the Cannes International Film Festival, and a week before the Grand Prix in Monte Carlo. Most people would think this is exciting, however, when you fly stand-by, ... read more

Well finals finally ended. Where should we go? The beach!!! Deanna and I left Granada at 7:00 AM to catch a bus to Nerja, which is a small little beach town in Malaga. The only word I can use to describe this town is… cute. It’s just plane cute! All the buildings are white washed, there’s flowers and palm trees everywhere, and lots and lots of people from England. Normally Nerja is a town with 20,000 people, but in during the summer months the population shoots up to about 90,000. People from England, and other countries within Europe come down to live for the summer. Not a bad idea if you ask me. There is a lot to see and do in Nerja including caves, but since we were only there for the day, we decided ... read more

As I write this, I have exactly 17 days left here in Spain. Where did the time go? I feel like just yesterday I was saying good-bye to my mom in the Minneapolis airport. Looking back I seemed so young. I am now in the second to last stage of studying abroad. I like to call it the “this really blows” stage. Last stage; reverse culture shock. Just as I start becoming a part of the community, and really truly understanding the language it’s time to leave. I hate to say it, but I’m afraid to come home. I was quite depressed for a long time before I came here. Since I came here, I have been the happiest I’ve been in three years. Some of the fears that I have about going back to the ... read more

About a week ago I got my last set of visitors. My sister and broseph-in-law came to visit me in Granada. They were coming into Granada via train at about 9:30 PM. I grabbed a few drinks while I very impatiently waited for them to arrive. I told Amanda that I would pick her up from the train station Casablanca style. But for those of you who know my sister and I, we were just a bunch of giggles (aka loud). After they got off the train we walked into town and I introduced them to my favorite food. A döner kebap. It’s Turkish, and amazing. When Deanna and I traveled around Germany and Austria we ate a lot of them, because they’re cheap, delicious, and they fill you up. Then of course we got gelato. ... read more

My lovely travel buddy Deanna and I decided we’d had enough of our roommates, and life in Granada, so we took a little weekend trip to Barcelona. We had a late flight out of Granada, so we didn’t arrive at our hostel till about 10:30. We checked in and went to go unpack before grabbing a drink. We walk into our room, and our roommates were taking a nap, so we were trying to be quiet. One woke up and said hello so I started talking to him, then his friend woke up. They didn’t speak Spanish or much English, but so I asked them where they were from. They’re from Italy (they would be). Their names are Luka and Mauro, but I will refer to them as the Italian Stallions. They continued to tag along ... read more

April 3rd 2010

Miércoles Santo It was very chilly on this day, but the sun was out, and not a cloud in the sky. My friend Allie had a friend visiting from the states all week, so we spent the day people watching and drinking coffee. Another strange sighting in Plaza Nueva happened. I was just looking around when I saw a man carrying an entire ham leg with the hoof attached. But this wasn’t one of the legs you can buy at the store. The Spanish are very proud of their ham, and you can buy cured ham legs for a pretty penny. But this particular ham leg looked pretty skinny and not like the ones that you buy at the butcher shop. He ate this leg like he was a cave man, AND shared it with his ... read more

Doming de Ramos Semana Santa is a huge deal in Spain. Every city celebrates it differently. It starts the Sunday before Easter, and goes until the following Sunday. There are processions, good food, and a ton of people. A lot of people leave for vacations, some stay, and a lot of tourists come during this time. If you ever plan on traveling during Semana Santa, book everything months in advance, because everything sells out, and the prices go through the roof. Semana Santa also usually corresponds with the first full moon of spring. I started the first day of Semana Santa having breakfast outside overlooking the Alhambra in the Albizín. Then the church bells went off. With that, mass had ended and Semana Santa had officially began. People prepare for Semana Santa all year, so they ... read more

March 25th 2010

I woke up early to catch the bus for Córdoba with the rest of the school. Córdoba is a large city about two and a half hours from Granada. There is a lot to do and see in Córdoba, but unfortunately I was only there for the day, so I didn’t get to see much. I’ve been learning a lot about Córdoba in my Islamic culture in Spain class. In the middle ages, Córdoba was one of the largest cities in the world. Córdoba is also well known for it leather. I didn’t have time to check out many of the leather stores (my wallet thanks me for this), but I hear they are quite the exporters. But what Córdoba is most well known for is “El Gran Mezquita de Córdoba.” El Gran Mezquita de Córdoba ... read more

My school sometimes puts on day trips to different cities within Andalucía. So I took the day trip to a small pueblo (small town) named Ronda. Ronda is a cute little town that is situated on cliffs. We left Granada early Sunday morning, and it took us about two hours to get there. I’m sure the scenery was beautiful, but I slept the majority of the way there, and when I wasn’t sleeping I had my eyes shut tight. Most of you know that I get car sick just sitting in a car, so sometimes bus rides can really be a struggle for me. Our tour guide was one of the teachers at our school. She is an interesting lady. She is very loud, kind of scary at times, but very smart. She really knows her ... read more

The next stop on the agenda for my parent’s trip was Granada. I was really excited to show them around Granada. I’ve really started to feel at home here, so it meant a lot to me to be able to show them around. We also lucked out and there was an open apartment in the building right next to mine, so they were my neighbors during there few days in Granada. It was also very cold in Granada, but the sun was out! Spain has a very different feel when the sun’s out. It’s so beautiful. I took them to all of my favorite places in Granada, and introduced them to my host family. My parents were invited over to dinner at my host family’s apartment. This was so nice. I was really glad that both ... read more
