Hey! How's it going out there? Long time, no blog hey? Well, the news in the life of Charlieo is that I'm settling in to Montreal again. It's been about a year and a half since my geographic location has been so stable. The Co-op sur Genereux is bustling with bike repairs, giant pots of soup, and for me, lots of computing. Yup, despite the anti-social nature of tap tap tapping on keys, I plan to do a lot of it over the next year. Never mind that right now though; there's been lots of other cool stuff going on in the last month... I'll work backwards, towards my last blog: In the last week, I moved into the bedroom that I'll have 'til the end of December. I really can't over-emphasize how much I appreciate ... read more

August 8th 2005

Well then... Back into travel mode for the last week - we finished with Folklore, spent a couple nights in Prince George, celebrating the end of the season, and started hitching to Vancouver Island. We've been in Vancouver for the past three days, enjoying the little miracles of couches, television, cigarettes and sleeping in - today we'll be on the ferry to Nanaimo, and asking for rides up to Tofino. "We" is Kristian, Kimico, Ben and Myself. Sometimes its hard for four pot heads to make a decision, but we're doing all right. We're ready to get out of the city. BIG MUTHA FREEKIN' TREES! That's what I wanna see. Me and Kris split from Ben and Kim in Prince George, only to find them again beside the road in Quesnal, two hours down the road. ... read more

I miss my music collection. I miss having a bathroom and a kitchen. I miss the multiculturalisms of city life. I miss my bike. Time is flyin' by, and I'll be rolling back east in no time. Family and friends, familiar surroundings. Maybe I'll get out to Vancouver Island while I'm in the neighbourhood. Planting in B.C. next week. Sorry to everyone I haven't had time to reply to. Thanks for writing to me. See ya when I see ya. ... read more

Hey, so, I've been a little bit behind in my computing, but hey, what can ya do? Planting's been good, on the good days. The bad ones are bad, but I'll keep at it. We're moving camp today, moving a little closer to the mountains, somewhere near Hinton. Photos? Scrounging for free internet means I can't get my pictures on here. I got some cool shots of our helicopter trip a couple weeks ago. Its kind of cool that our skills are so unique, that its worth flying us, our bags and shovels and trees out to a block. I haven't been reading or writing as much. The work really takes a lot out of you, fills up your days. Oh well. I'm getting paid. That's pretty sweet. After watching my bank acount go down for ... read more

The Cure

So... When I get out of the truck, returning from a day on the block, I kind of limp from one sore foot to the other. Scrubbing my hands, grabbing my dishes, lining up for food, every action is slooow, trying to minimize all unnecessary jolts to by battered being. But I've found the cure...I'm aching all over until I lie flat on my back in my boxer shorts, and smoke a cigarette. Its great. After four days, and more than 2000 trees - which is said to be not at all bad for a rookie - I'm in Edson for my first day off. I've got a crew, led by Tim and Samaya. Lots of friendly folks, of all sorts. Brian is fifty I think, he's planted for like 17 years. There's three or four ... read more

So, We had no trouble finding the Folklore crew packing up their camp near Kamloops. I got to sit in the blistering sun for half an hour or so while everyone got ready for the drive to Alberta. We passed through Jasper around 9pm. (I'm still getting used to there being light outside past 7pm). I saw Mt. Robson for the first time, and we passed about 10 elk on different parts of the road. Six were just hanging out across from hotels in Jasper. Around 1 or 2am, we arrived at our campsite. Northern lights were flicking white across the clear blue black. Right now I'm in Edson, maybe three hours north west of Edmonton. Me, Sharon and Brian are camping about half an hour outside of town. Everyone but me is enjoying a much ... read more

So, the past two days have been rather exciting. After calling about seventy B.C. tree planting companies, I finally found myself a job. I'll get a ride with a Folklore Contracting crew today, up to their next gig near Red Earth, Alberta. I'm ready for what might be the toughest job I've ever had. Having been a rather lazy traveller for the last three months, it feels good to be on the road towards some well-earned dough. Why plant trees? Mostly because of the people I've known who have enjoyed planting. The couple who owned the farm I worked on last summer paid for it with tree planting money. Every summer for eight or nine, years, they made the journey from the Saguenay to the B.C. coast, because the made good money, and because they loved ... read more

Hello again...Another change of scene, I'm hangin' out with my cousin Carrie and her daughter Julie, my Aunt Cogi and Uncle Don in Kamloops. I got a good taste of Vancouver, and some good visits with fam. Carrie's boyfriend flew down from Jasper, and took us on a quick flight up to 108 mile. That was cool. I went to see my Aunt Jackie, and my great Aunt Bertha too. Work? Yeah, I should do that soon. Okay, see yas.... read more
