Yeah, that seems like a good title for a journal entry... We all want to escape from something, sometimes... I didn't make it to Pie de la Cuesta, but I did escape from the Tourist Strip of Lovely Acapulco. I went surfing! Anja and Barry and I got a collectivo ride out of town, about half an hour to the south. After a bit of negotiating, he found a chubby kid who'd rent us his board for the day, and I went surfing. The other two are beginners, but have a crucial couple of weeks behind them. I just wanted to get comfortable being in the waves, nevermind riding them. There'll be more writing about surfing in the near future, I'm sure of it. So I, and me bruddah Matt done got a ride out of ... read more

March 8th 2005

Hello again everybody, Almost a week away from phones and computers has suited me just fine. It was last Thursday that Matt and I arrived at the Ixtapa-Zihautenejo airport to meet our Dad and Stepmom, Peter and Beth. As I travelled across Canada last fall, me and my Dad joked all the time about meeting in Mexico for Christmas. We missed Christmas, but its been a swell little family reunion on the Pacific Coast... Denny and Maribel, the couple that owns the Casa del Brisas del Mar met the four of us at the airport. From there, it was about an hours´ drive south to Brisas del Mar. The community consists of about fifteen people, thirty goats, five pigs, and five kilometers of beach. Denny and Maribel have spent the last three years buying their property, ... read more

¿Where to begin? Mexico City, or el DF has about the same population as all of Canada. I had no particular idea of what to expect. There were a couple scenes of el DF in the film Y Tu Mama Tambien, which are true to form. Wide roads, mad traffic, lots and lots of people. We came here despite countless warnings about how dangerous it was, and we haven.t had any problems with theft or violence. I only mention this to assure my Mom that I.m safe, and in case other travellers are wondering if they should come here... Matt and I arrived last sunday morning after an all-night bus. It was deluxe, including The Lizzie McGuire Movie, and seats that go way back. I called my friend Marco when we got to the Terminal Norte ... read more

Matamoros V.2 - Inspiration

February 26th 2005

This begins with the idea that entirely unique events happen all over the place, all the time. On the bus between San Antonio and Brownsville, between three and five in the morning, there happened the biggest lightning storm Ive seen in years. One second the whole landscape lit white, flash, dark again, skeleton trees moving by in frames, like natural strobe lighting. The Texan terrain is now etched in my brain. I dont expect to see anything quite like that again for quite a while. It made me glad I was paying attention. Entirely unique events happen all over the place, all the time. Its not directly connected, but McGill taught me that the latin root of inspiration means something like :breath in:... read more

Buenos Dias Amigos, Yes, we survived 47 hours of 8 buses, and wasn't it fun! It felt good to tell whoever asked that we had started in Canada and were going to Mexico. From the Brownsville Station, we took a cab across the border, which was much more relaxed than crossing into Detroit... Just a few of the characters we met on the rides: 2 mennonites from north of Kitchener on their way to San Diego - we were one the same buses from London, Ontario all the way to Dallas, TX; 1 short guy who looked and talked like Joe Pesci; 1 Texan carnival ride painter who was quite obsessed with breasts; 1 drawl-talkin', gold-toothed, friendly thug from Mississip... Good times were had by all. To have at least one full day without a bus ... read more

So, this site seems to work pretty well. Thanks for checking it out. I just finished cleaning up my e-mail account, and that got me thinking about how many connections we all have to other people, all over the place. I hope that this helps me maintain and strengthen some of the connections I've made, and that it helps me make some new ones, but mostly I hope its interesting and entertaining for y'all every once in a while. I'm sure you'll be delighted to hear that I'll soon deposit my last paycheck, upload a photo of yours truly, and go to a party with my sister Stephanie...What a day! Oh yeah, I bought our bus tickets yesterday, for me and my brother Matt. We leave next Monday, Feb 21st. We'll go from Toronto-Detroit,MI -Cinncinati,OH -Nashville,TN ... read more
