The home of the Terracotta Warriors. I have to admit Dana and I were a bit disappointed with the Warriors. Probably since we have seen so many photos and have heard all the stories of why they are so special such as each one has a different face, outfit and hairstyle. It was still amazing to see, but I wasn’t as impressed as I thought I would be. You can’t get all that close to them, you look down from above, and most of the site is still unexcavated. ... read more

This is China’s most beautiful mountain. It was quite the mission to get there as we had to take a 16 hour over night train. I really enjoy these trains, but 16 hours is a bit much. We arrived at 11 am and started to climb after a good breakfast of green onion cakes! This mountain is similar to the previous one in that there are stairs carved out of the granite mountain side. This one though was not a holy mountain and thus had no temples or calligraphy on the cliff faces. The work that went into it was incredible. The granite stairs have details carved into them to make them look like a wood grain. There are also carved railings on the mountain side. Our ascent was beautiful, with sunshine highlighting our surroundings. We ... read more

Asia » China » Shandong » Tai Shan April 2nd 2010

Dana and I decided to climb a holy Taoist mountain in China. We chose the grandest in both beauty and size: Tia’Shan. Thankfully our friend John helped us buy our train tickets as the woman didn’t speak a word of English and we didn’t want to risk pronouncing the name incorrectly and ending up in the wrong city. China has an amazing fleet of bullet trains. They run on schedule to the minute, so there is always a frantic dash to get on the train when it pulls into the station as it’s not waiting for anyone! The train we were on went at 200km/hour and whizzed through the country side (or rather power plants and industrious areas) and arrived in a random station where we were supposed to transfer to a local train to reach ... read more

Asia » China » Beijing April 1st 2010

After a short break from our travels, to spend time with family in Barbados and also in Vancouver for the 2010 Olympic Winter games (with a quick a surf trip on Vancouver Island), Dana and I once again continued on our journey, this time to Asia. We booked our ticket (cheap and last minute) to China 3 days before we left and picked up our Visa’s for entry to China (phew) the day before we left. CHINA Flying over Beijing as we descended for landing was quiet unremarkable. I’m not sure what I was expecting, but what we saw was a smoggy city with normal looking buildings and roads. Even when we were walking around the first day I was surprised by what I saw. It was nothing like the China I had imagined with bright ... read more

Even though Santiago is not famous for having the best culture, the best dancing, or the best scenery, I still really enjoyed it. We stayed in a beautiful old classic hotel. As Mondays have free admission to all the museums, we went on a little walking tour and checked out several of them. First we climbed a structure I’m not sure how to describe. It seemed to be a building with big white stairs going up to multiple levels with flower pots, sculptures and fountains but at some point it turned into a cliff face with large jagged rocks and tunnels. The top was a big tower where we had great views of the city. Very interesting and different. We strolled along the river and found a huge seafood market, where we had a lunch consisiting ... read more

South America » Argentina » Mendoza » Mendoza February 20th 2010

San Rafael is a small town about 1 hour south of Mendoza, in the heart of Argentina’s wine country. There is one simple reason we came here - wine. In my opinion some of the world’s best wine comes from those little fields of heaven. In order to get a true appreciation of the vino, we rented bicycles and road out of town to the vineyards themselves. It was a beautiful day, the warm summer sun mixed with the cool breeze, and the peace of the countryside occasionally pierced with foreign-sounding bird calls. It was great as long as you didn’t stop peddling, and let the sun melt you into the pavement. Every rest stop also required a popsicle/ice cream stop. When we arrived at Murville’s vineyard, a tour of the grounds was just starting so ... read more

Barry, being Barry, had some contacts with 2 world-class fly fishing guides. These are the guys who took out George Bush Sr when he visited Argentina. We set up a 2 day drift boat trip in the small town of San Martin. To get to this out-of the-way little town, we had to drive 5 hours up the famous 7 Lakes Road. This drive takes my number one for best drives in the world. Green lake after green lake, mountains, flowers and perfect evening lighting giving a soothing feel to the landscape. We were able to score front seats on the top of our double decker bus so we had a great panoramic view. When we arrived, we were greeted at the bus station by our guide who gave us a ride to our apartment where ... read more
