Hello!! Many of you will be pleased to hear that Gail has decided that she cannot be bothered to write this blog. This has therefore given me (Nikki - hello again) free reign to write what ever that hell I want as Gail is the censorship queen. And for all you English department folks out there, yes, this will be full of spelling mistakes, grammatical errors and I will be using commas inappropriately. This is only going to be a fairly short blog anyway as there ain't much to write. I just wanted to finish of the Cambodia section before we get too swept away with the crazy world of Vietnam and forget everything! All of the pictures on here are from our 3 day visit to the famous Angkor Wat temples. We didn't really take ... read more

Greetings Pop Fans. We hope the last blog was OK... On reflection, we decided it was a little long and rambling. Also very annoyed about the situation with the cameras and the memory stick as it made the blog look very dull!! We're currently in Cambodia and struggling to find anyone or a shop that may be able to help us resolve the problem... So we are unable to upload pictures from Jaipur, Jodhpur, Mumbai, Singapore (including Universal Studios theme park visit with Shrek. Gutted) Kuala Lumpur and now Cambodia. It turns out the new memory card we thought wasn't infected with a virus is also screwed... So no pictures here either. Yes, we are crying. We left Mumbai on an Air Singapore flight which may have been the poshest flight either of us have ever ... read more

Welcome to our final Blog on the Indian leg of our journey. It’s with much sadness, happiness, relief and reflection that we’ll tell you all about the adventures and scams we encountered during our last two weeks there. Sit back, relax and enjoy…. (its a long one, sorry) JAIPUR AND JODHPUR We fled Varanasi in search of The Pink City of Jaipur in which we hoped to find some sense of calmness! The Old Town is actually painted pink, much to our surprise, because some Maharajah a few hundred years ago wanted to impress King George, we think. Our overnight train journey was shared with Rosie and Jim (imagine trying to resist singing the song at them!) some brand new travelers who asked us millions of questions and made us feel rather like we were bloody ... read more

We welcome you to this Blog with just a selection of the questions and greetings that face us every other minute in India. Enjoy: 'You want rickshaw?' 'Hello. Money?' 'Hello. 10 rupees?' 'What country?' 'Hello Madam. You want look my shop? Looking is free.' Hello Madam. You want guide? Cannot get into the palace/temple/fort/museum without guide.' 'Madam. Where you go? You not want to talk?' We think this goes to show that the Indian people are quite possibly the loveliest, welcoming and friendliest people in the world! Unfortunately, we’re finding it difficult to be as friendly as the Indians as we’re not sure whether they realize that we get asked the same questions fifty times a day. This is an example of the conversation we will have at least 10 times a day with various different ... read more

Ahoy There! Last time we left off we were sunning/burning ourselves on 36degree Varkala beach in South India. In all honesty, there isn’t much to report as we literally ate, slept and drank for nine days. Now our bellies have returned and we’ve just worked out why. We stayed in a place called Mango House, which turned out to be way over budget yet filled with lovely fellow backpackers. Had a few great parties and hangovers. Some highlights: Varkala beach is down a big cliff and has some amazing waves. We found the atmosphere and the crowd to be more relaxed, mixed and friendly than Goa. Whether this is because Goa was our first stop or it's actually past its hey-day we’re not sure. In hindsight, we think we should have just travel up the Kerala ... read more

Fort Cochin, Alleppey, Kumily. Greetings avid readers. This should be a larger blog than normal as we’re cramming 3 places into one. Again we’re about two weeks behind. Mainly because we’re currently in Varkala and we’re having too much fun! It’s like a holiday resort with lovely beach and beer… mmmm... Anyway, a few observations for you: All women have long hair. All men have a mustache. Mullets and flares are still quite fashionable. All buses are crammed to the roof with people. We keep sitting in the men's sections. We’re in Kerala at the moment. It’s the hottest place yet. Booking train tickets were the bain of our life in Alleppey. We spent nearly 5 hours on the Internet trying to figure out the whole railway and booking system only to discover they don’t accept ... read more

Hi All, We’re still trying to catch up on all the blogs. Our current location (Alleppey) seems to ‘close’ at nine so there really isn’t much else we can do…No ‘special tea’ served here. So, this part of our trip led us further and higher inland to the Nilgiri Hill Stations in Tamil Nadu state. The hill stations are a cluster of about three or four little towns built alongside the railway. Our plan was, in effect, to travel down the stations backwards but we’ll get on to why travel in India doesn’t always go to plan later. We were roughly 2000m above sea level and the highest peak lies at 2600m. This meant a new type of chilly weather was to envelope Nikki’s bronze skin and serve to make Gail feel more at home. We ... read more

Namaste!! Hope all is well in the land of hope and glory. We are writing this approx 2 weeks behind at the moment… hopefully we’ll catch up soon. So.. we left Bang Bang Bangalore for a city called Mysore. It was a three hour bus ride (FYI- this cost 1 quid each. We seem to remember it’s 1.80 into town in Sheffield!!). Checked out a few rooms on arrival, one resembled the cells from Bad Girls only with less romance. We didn’t choose this one and realize it may not be possible to enjoy a 3 quid a night room. Plumped for a room for 4 quid a night with… HOT WATER!!!! No shower mind, just our old friend Mr Bucket. Gail actually cried tears of joy when she bathed. Anyway… Mysore is a prosperous bustling ... read more

Hello Avid Readers of Nikki and Gail's JOINT blog (for those of you who thought this was Gail's first novel; we are writing this together). Last time we left off, we were about to embark on our second Death Bus but luckily a pleasant, safe vehicle arrived to take us to Bangalore overnight in luxury. Obviously, 'luxury' means peeing by the side of the road at 4am being eaten on the ass by mosquitoes whilst watched by a load of people on other coaches. Classy. We arrived confident in our first city and thought we'd leave the rickshaws behind and (stupidly) attempted to navigate our way through the streets to our hotel. Yes, hotel! Confidence is a must in these situations and we sauntered up to the four-star hotel looking like shit demanding to see the ... read more

Hampi! We’ll open this blog entry with a report from the Death Bus. It turned up an hour late at Mapusa (obviously) to take us to the old town of Hampi. We’d booked an overnight sleeper bus that was to take 11 hours but took around 17… After boarding the bus and being allocated our ‘cell’ we realized this would be a long journey. We had a ‘bed’ on the top row right at the front of the bus which gave us a good view of all the driver’s antics... This came with a window that literally fully opened onto the road below. We’ve realized there are no health and safety regulations in India. Funny with hindsight but at the time you can find yourself longing for the organization and safety of the western world! We ... read more
