Christmas Day. Was a touch miserable for the day, after having stayed up so late the previous night, but not able to speak to my four children left at home :( I was told by some of the people on our tour, not to worry about it, as the kids were probably having fun anyway ... gee that makes me feel better - NOT! Anyway an early day. We slept in unfortunately so breakfast was kind of skipped. I raced in and grabbed a couple of eat on the way foods to try and tide me over. We drive all over the place just looking at buildings and things. I'm not sure I would be able to remember going past half of the things we saw. It was just going to be one of those days. ... read more

It was sad to leave Venice. I could have easily spent more time there, but I was excited to head off to Rome for Christmas day. One aside was we were told just before getting to Venice that on Christmas day, we would do a mystery present swop, so if everyone could purchase a gift to the value of 3 euro and wrap it up to put in the box and at lunch we would all take a lucky dip. I think everyone bought stuff in Venice for the box. Was the easiest option really. Driving out of the Venice area, I couldn't help but notice that for once the countryside although pretty at times had some kind of ugly looking houses! I guess I should quantify why I would say that. I realise it is ... read more

I never knew Venice flooded! I mean its kind of obvious now thinking about it, but I really never expected it to be flooded when we went there! We were blessed enough to enter Venice the morning of its highest tide of 1.4m! Luckily high tide was at 4am, so by 9am, it wasn't so bad! That being said, I was totally freaked out! I mean, hearing about all these tides, we had to walk across this fairly low jetty to get to our boat in the first place, and we had been told the next high tide would be at 4pm. Um .... does that mean this jetty will be under???? I dont think our tour guide knew what I was talking about. Arriving in Venice, the first thing I noticed was the water level ... read more

Another day another bus trip. The weather in Lucerne was actually warming up, and we didn't wake to any fresh snow in the morning. It was such a contrast driving through the Switzerland countryside. Seeing green hills and valleys. It was so beautiful. What just was really amazing was all the sun. However, then we came to the 17km tunnel! (oh another side note, the bus drivers lover cranking up the heat, which makes you feel sick, you have to yell down to the front to turn it off!). The huge tunnel was an adventure in itself. Driving through it, watch the outside temperature rise, as the further in you get the warmer it is! On the one side we had sun and green, as soon as we came out the other side of the tunnel ... read more

Our first two night stop! Was definitely enjoyed. The first optional tour of the day was a boat ride on the lake. We chose not to do this, and we are again glad we didn't go. For 22 euro each person, it was so much nicer spending the time walking around the town. As it was, this was really our only chance to have done it, and I wish I had of achieved some shopping in this time as well! After the boat cruise, everyone had to meet at the hotel to jump on the bus. We were taken to the Lion monument, which if you had time you could have easily walked to anyway from the hotel. However they get you going on this, so that once again they can take you to a shop ... read more

Breakfast again was amazing. However this was kind of the last of the really really good breakfasts! Ok, some along the way weren't too bad, but compared to this one, they just never made that mark again! It was all good though .... Now this was the first day of Optional tours! The first optional tour on offer being the Cruise along the Reine River. Luckily I had read about it previously and opted not to do it! Honestly to give more detail about this, by not doing it, you hop in the bus and travel directly beside the river seeing all the "castles" and ruins that the people see on the boat. Ok, so they see it somewhat slower and have a running commentary to go along with it, but by not going on the ... read more

One thing, if you are going to be travelling on these bus tours, dont expect to sleep in! That just never happens. A wake up call at 8am is an amazing sleep in. Dont expect to get many of these! For our morning in Amsterdam, we had to be on the bus for 8:30am. That means breakfast was at 7:45am and wake up call 7am. (I did write a whole pile of these minor notes in my cosmos book, however that was lost the last day - very frustrating, especially for all the details on internet costs etc for you). Breakfast was lovely. Alot of choices and options. Once again, when we went outside there was snow everywhere! First thing we headed out to a boat cruise around the canals. Now unfortunately my son was the ... read more

Our first day of the tour. We are about to undertake a Cosmos tour called Best of Europe for 16 days. The Australian code for this tour is 5161. It was distracting have so many people in the lobby of the Thistle Euston. There were several tours starting the day we were leaving, and one of the tours wasn't heading to Europe. With snow falling outside, I got totally distracted and had to go out and play a touch. In the end we found the right bus to get on. There had been a massive snow fall overnight, so we weren't able to catch the freeway to the ferry due to several accidents blocking the road, so we went along some of the back roads, which was a nice way to view the countryside. Being Jet lagged, waking early wasn't going to be an issue, I was still in the habit of waking around 4-5am and would play around on the laptop uploading the gazillion photos I had taken on the trip so far and also responding to the messages I had been getting on the photos already up. So when the room service knocked on the door around 7am I was already awake but there was no way I was going to open the door while they were there! I was petrified still on the whole tipping thing, so was grateful I was being taken on a personal tour through the day and could hopefully be explained and made less terrified of workers in regards to tipping. Seriously I think people that were born into tipping societies dont understand ... read more

I guess if you travel, one thing you have to be mindful of is making sure if you wash clothes that you have enough time to get them dried. Our clothes from the washing trip a few days ago, had been wet last night, so me and my big ideas decided to turn the heater right up so they could all dry so they could be nicely packed for our flight to the states this morning. I woke up heavily overheated and felt like I was going to vomit. Joel went down and had breakfast by himself, I just felt so ill. I think my head was stuck out the window as I tried to bring my core body temperature down and fast. I skipped breakfast altogether, I was not confident at all that my stomach ... read more
