Thanks for the shout out! Glad you enjoyed your letter. I love the story about meeting ashleigh. Haha, so cool!!! That's like the day mom arrived in ZA and you guys went to lunch and the girl had dated someone from puyallup...seriously!? crazy! Also, i was totally wrong on what i thought was isabel's face. kristie informed me that was actually her body and her face was at the total other side of the picture!! haha. love your stories...keep blogging, maybe less time in between the blogs, too! :)
Bet! I'm sitting here at work with tears in my eyes reading your blog! What an amazing story that you would meet someone from your hometown who knows so many of the same people you know! And what an amazing quote from Lacey. Wow! Glad to see Jake got the package! Hope both of you can enjoy the contents!! Wonderful pictures, wonderful adventures! It makes me so happy!! Love you and thanks for keeping me in the loop of your excellant adventures!! Jeanne
Ugh I want to fly over there and give those boys a piece of my mind! Is there anyone you can talk to for advice? Is anyone experiencing a similar situation? Today I almost cried in class too....a kid that tends to be a troublemaker came unprepared and was goofing off in class. I was repeatedly and probably too kindly telling him to stop, stay on task, ect. I finally lost my cool when he asks me to go to the bathroom right as we were starting to take notes. I said, "Absolutely not! You can't come to my class unprepared and misbehave and expect me to let you go to the bathroom!" So a few min. later he asks again! I couldn't believe it so I said, "No! And don't ask me again." Well he gets up and LEAVES THE ROOM! The whole class is looking at me whispering wondering how I am going to react. I wanted to CRY...and leave the room too! I could never imagine doing that when I was a student...the nerve!! So I call the vice principal to go find him and talk to him. Later when I talked to him, he told me that he didn't think what he did was wrong and if he had the chance he'd do it all over again!!!! When things like that happen, I just remind myself of the encouraging and rewarding experiences I have had, and move on! Hang in there Bethany!! And don't be afraid to ask for advice!!
Crazy fun weekend!! Oh... I have to tell you that I think Korean spas are amazing... once you get past the naked part. There is one in China that my sis and I went to. She used to go with friends a few times a month. We got scrubs and sat in the sauna.. and nobody really cares about what you look like anyways. Fun stuff. :o) But if you tell friends back in the US... you are looked at like a crazy person!
INSANE!! You are adding so many crazy stories to your life... I can't believe you were stuck in an elevator and were able to be like, "hey, let's just eat our lunch"! :o) Love it! That surprises me about the kids. I think it might be the Korean culture. The Korean kids that go to the school in China are similar in that way and you just have to break through the shell and figure out what gets them going. But the tough love is good and definitely needed!!! Don't let that be a reflection of you.. you're doing an awesome job and you are a great teacher!!
I really enjoyed reading your South Korea post! It reminded me of my own time there, and how much I miss it! If you're able to check out Busan, it's a really cool city. My blog is looking for travel photos, reviews, etc, to share. If you have the time, check it out at dirty-hippies.blogspot.com, or email me at dirtyhippiesblog@gmail.com. Continued fun on your travels!
Heather :)
Oh, Bet!! What a weekend!! But so much fun and so many adventures!! I'm so glad that y'all are taking advantage of everything!! Sorry that you missed your friends but it sounds like the trip was still plenty worth it. I'm also so glad to hear that all of your friends are as adventurous as you and Jake!! Give him a big hug for me!! I love you guys and thank you so much for all of the news!! Jeanne
I just wrote a long comment and then accidentally deleted it...ugh! So, glad to hear you are a official alien!! And that you got out of the elevator without real guns being fired! All the food shots make me think that I will bring a suitcase full of food when I come!! About the jerks, what happens if they fail and is there anyone to consult about it? Don't let them get you down! I missed skyping with y'all this weekend. Emily and I got online about 9 last night but you were out of town. Did you meet with your friends and then spend the night? I hope you had a great weekend and have a great week! I guess if all the kids were good it wouldn't be normal! Love you!! Jeanne
Oh no! I hate that feeling when you can't stop crying!! I am sure it was a little bit of pent up tears that just needed a way out :-) you've been through so many changes in the past few weeks! Laurie said Syria was kind of the same way in terms of communication and organization! It frustrated her so much! Keep blogging--i check for new ones every day!
I'm looking for the kids that looks like Areck and can't find him! Wonder why they don't like pictures...so funny cause I thought they LOVED them?? Keep up the great work Bethany---as you get used to the kids and they get used to you you will all be so much more comfortable with each other. I am just getting to the point with my students that I can joke around with them and they come to me to tell me things. In the beginning I thought they would never speak to me! So proud of you. Love you.
stupid, stupid feet i'll tell you about serious foot pain....
:-) just kidding - standing for that long would be terrible! i just realized that you have a blog and have started reading - i cant wait to get caught up! love you!!!!!
I love reading your blog What a adventure you are on! I have so enjoyed reading your blog. Do you need anything from the states? You are in our thoughts and prayers.
Ouch. that sounds horrible!! How long was your recovery? Sounds like quite an adventurous day. Crazy how they stand there waiting to see if your ok because they have to pay for it!? The "Angels in us" is a hilarious name for a coffee place.
Hey, Bet!! I sent a package to y'all to that address but I'm afraid it wasn't in the four lines like you have it! I hope it gets to you, not only because you need oatmeal and peanut butter but also because it was darned expensive to send!! Take care and have fun!! Love you! Jeanne
Oh, Bet! What a day! Hope your head is OK as well as your sore muscles! Weren't y'all told that you would be teaching four days a week? Sounds like that was another piece of bad info? Have a great week and take care of your precious self!! Jeanne
Loving this!! I seriously need to get ready for work, but I'm just loving these! I love the pic of you saying "pay attention!" And the real one of you lookin like a teacher!! You look great. And I love that I can totally relate to what you're talking about... like the grocery store that turned into a random things market and a clothing place... even though I've never been to Korea. :o)
Keep blogging... I'll keep reading.
oh the bluntness I think it's an Asian culture thing. My sister has people constantly telling her she's fat. It takes a toll on your emotional state, even when you know it's not true and that they are just BLUNT people.
Oh, I can totally relate to the feet thing. I started at Old Navy in February and my feet were KILLING me the first few days. It's gotten better, but man, it's not a fun feeling.
I cannot believe those names! I had to read that paragraph like 3 times to make sure I was reading right!!!!
Paris Baguette!!! Such a great place with yummy smells and tasty treats!! There is one in Tianjin that Sharon goes to... and they make the best cakes! We got one for Lane for his birthday... it's like whipped cream heaven!
Hang in there with all of the work. You can do it! And let yourself feel those feelings of being completely overwhelmed. It's OK to ask, "Why am I here?" That doesn't mean you made a bad choice or are not a fun and adventurous person. It means your real.
Love reading your blog... and love you!
Glad you're OK Bethany! It's so much fun reading your updates, I love them! That's awesome that your bf is MJ! Ha ha
Please be careful on your next "field-day" games day. It will be dangerous with soccer players, baseballs and frisbees all over the one field! :)
Hey friend... Love reading your blog! I have a few entries to catch up on, and I'm up for the task. :o) I think it's just perfect that you are going to be teaching a top class with controversial topics. You're going to be great at that!! I'm excited for you and this adventure you're on. Yes... shoes always come off. Oh, and I noticed that the Asian culture is very concerned about warmth. My sister's helper would freak if I left the apartment with flip flops and it wasn't blazing hot out. And when we were skyping and she saw Braden in shorts IN OUR APARTMENT she asked my sister if it was warm here and if he was warm enough. :o)
//Costa Rica now, for a couple months! (June 2014)
//I am now in Istanbul, Turkey! I'm pretty excited about being in such a diverse and exciting place. I have a lot to learn in regards to history and hope to do so in my year here. Looking forward to meeting new people, learning about a new culture, and exploring a new place! Cheers! (May 2011)
//I am about to begin my year of teaching in Cheongju, South Korea! I am very anxious for it to start so I can see what this is all about! I am hoping to be able to travel to as many other parts of Asia as possible. (March 2010)
