My blog has been getting a bit of activity recently, perhaps due to the recent spotlight on Ghana with Obama's visit in July, perhaps just because. I've also been doing alot of thinking about Ghana, MoFA and my time overseas and thought I would post a bit of an update. The information I gathered during my time in the Northern Region was used as a basis to help guide the continued partnership between EWB and MoFA. The roles and programs have changed over the years, and continue to grow and strengthen, but always focused on helping farmers pull themselves out of poverty. The partnership continues today with the successful ‘Agriculture as a Business’ program developed by both EWB and MoFA. As you may have read in my past entries, for my friends in Northern Ghana, farming ... read more

So this is it, my last entry in my travel blog :( Since I arrived back here in Canada last week, I’ve had a chance to go through some debrief training with EWB and spend some time up North with my family and now I’m moved back into Guelph, ready to start class on Monday. I’ve been trying to write this last blog entry for a little while now, and getting thoroughly frustrated every time I try. How am I supposed to sum up the last four months in mere words? How can I share everything I want to in just one more entry? It almost feels like by writing it all down, the reality that its all over will hit pretty hard, and I’m not sure I’m ready for that - although maybe that’s just ... read more

So its been a little while since I’ve been able to write – time is nearing the end here and there’s still so much to fit in! Since I last wrote, I’ve been able to stay with another farmer (in Tolon district, where I was working earlier in July) and visit another new district (West Mamprussi) and the last week has been spent trying to analyse just about everything I’ve learned since I’ve arrived and form some conclusions – definitely not an easy task! For my stay in the village this time, I lived with Maamie and her family in Tali. The experience was just as good but incredibly different. It goes to show that although a lot of the villages, houses, etc. around here may look the same, each is pretty unique. You definitely can’t ... read more

So the biggest highlight of my week (and perhaps my time here in general) was the three days that I got to stay in the village of Naglogu just north of Yendi. Naglogu is a village of about 500 people (give or take). I stayed with Baba Abdulai and his family (12 in total including his wife and two of his three children). The purpose of my stay was to get a better idea of exactly what the needs of farmers are (first hand experience is always best), and what the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) is doing/ could do better to help them more - its more helpful to do that when I’m not following around a member of the MoFA staff and actually get to spend some time with the communities by ... read more

Hello hello! Another updates, this time about my week in Yendi, a town/city about 100km from Tamale. During my tour on the first day by one of my co-workers, I was told that Yendi is “a big small town in West Africa” I laughed at the time, but looking back it’s a pretty accurate description. I really enjoyed my time there actually, and I’m looking forward to going back next week for another 5 days. Yendi is the Dagomba capital (Dagomba is the most prevalent tribe in this area), even though Tamale is the political capital of the Northern Region. It hasn’t been influenced as much by western culture as Tamale - there are no multi storey buildings, the food is pretty traditional but things are definitely changing - they have just opened their first internet ... read more

So its been awhile since I last wrote – I continue to be a very busy girl! Last weekend was a long weekend here in Ghana as well, so I got to do a little bit of traveling. Had a really good experience (don’t worry you get to hear all about it) but it left little time for updating the travelblog. My role at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) is now really starting to shape up. It was interesting for a while because Navid (my Engineers Without Borders Partner) and I didn’t have a specific project we were expected to work on. We’ve really had to define our own roles and develop a program where we are able to contribute to the organization here, learn a lot, and experience as much as we can ... read more

To debuy! Time fort another update, I’ve had a really good week so there’s lots to say! I have been working in Savelugu/Nanton district, out of their office in Pong-Tamale. Pong-Tamale is a small community about 30km north of Tamale. They have been very good about trying to get me to experience as much as possible. This week I was working directly with agricultural extension agents (AEAs) on some projects as well as with other members of the district development office staff. AEA’s are the front line workers who actually implement all the programs run by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture. They work directly with communities and farmers to help them increase their agricultural productivity. One of these activities was setting up and distributing resources for demonstrations to be carried out by each of the ... read more

Hello again! So this afternoon I was watching the Ghana vs. South Africa World Cup qualifying game, like the rest of the nation, but then all of a sudden I thought, “hey, if everyone’s watching soccer, the internet café must be pretty empty” so I headed off to town and I was right! Only a couple others in here right now, so I can write away with out interruptions! Hehe and from the sounds outside – I think Ghana may have just scorred! After a month of work at the regional office I’ve started going out to the districts. This week and next I am in Savelugu/ Nanton district which is just North of Tamale. Its about a ½ hr drive (when you don’t get lost! More abt that later) and I’ve been getting a ride ... read more

Nau Guorum Reporting in once again from good ol’ Tamale. Another update, before things are abt to change drastically. For the past 4 weeks I’ve been working here at the regional office. I’ve been through 4 different departments (last week I wrote abt 2, this week I’ll write abt the other 2 - post harvest and animal traction). But next week I’m heading out to the districts! Yay! First I will spend two weeks in Savelugu, which is just north of Tamale (maybe 15 min drive – I’ll be able to still live at home) and then after that we’ll play it by ear. Maybe I’ll rotate through some other districts, maybe if things are going well I’ll focus my work there and just do some visits to the other districts. My weeks at the regional ... read more

Marraba! Welcome back So, its been awhile since I updated this, I wrote most of this post on Sunday, but a bunch of circumstances beyond my control (rain storm, disk drive not working, website not working etc) have delayed the posting. Hehe and the longer I couldn't post, the more I had to say, so it's gotten a little long. Everything’s still going really well, here's what I have to share: Last Tuesday, Navid and I went clothes shopping. My family’s friend is a seamstress so we went there. I ended up buying one dress and one other outfit (pants and a long shirt/dress/jumper kind of thing). I haven’t worn the dress yet, but my friend Jane from work has invited me to church this Sunday, so that’ll be a good opportunity. The other outfit I ... read more
