On our travels our intension was always to go through Albania. Several years ago when it was communist country, it was one of the most isolated Iron curtain countries, there was no way you would be allowed in, you would have been shot! On researching our journey through Albania, we started to worry about the state of the roads,(we need to take care of Bongo, there’s a few thousand miles to go!) and possible documentation worries. So we had planned to drive back to Dubrovnik, take the ferry back to Italy then another to Greece, by-passing Albania. However, we never like going back where we have just been and the thought of 24hours on ferries was not appealing. Fingers crossed, we chose the border crossing that leads from Montenegro’s Capital Podgorica to Shkoder in Albania. We ... read more

It was with Fiona and Dave’s help that we toured Montenegro. Campsites as we know them are not plentiful here so it was great to have the advice. We called in to a site called Etno Selo this is to the North of Montenegro, as a stop off on the way to doing some rafting in the gorgeous clear blue waters that wind their way through the Montenegrin mountains. The site was well advertised with markers, well in advance along the road. When we arrived we couldn’t really make out what we were seeing. There weren’t any tents, campers. Caravans or Motor homes, there were a few scattered small huts, and an amazingly out of place Disneyland play park with a few rabbits, quails and a Hedgehog! But what astounded us was the amount of pre ... read more

We negotiated the Montenegrin border without problems, just queues. I had managed to contact a friend who lives in Herceg Novi just over the border. Well it turns out she lives on the tip of the peninsular opposite (but its still called Herceg Novi) and we virtually invited ourselves to visit them! After all they were pivotal in our decision to travel as they themselves had sailed around the world, which inspired us to do this trip. We drove around Kotor bay, it was absolutely stunning. We had a swim at Perast, beautiful clear water. Then with amazing instructions we navigated to Fiona and Dave’s house, and appreciated a very warm welcome from them and their 3 dogs. It was lovely to stop in such a lovely place and have a bed for the night. ... read more

Day 71-74 Trogir, Split, Dubrovnik ...and it had to happen somewhere!! We took a boat from our campsite to the small walled town of Trogir, situated on a peninsula North of Split. Boat seems the only (and cheap) way to travel because its so hot! (Think we mentioned the heat before!). Trogir was very pretty, well kept white stone walls narrow streets, incorporating a castle, cathedral and town square. Lots of souvenir shops and eateries, but the harbour was full of visiting cruiser sailing and motor yachts which is always good to watch. The following day we went further, a boat to Trogir and another larger passenger boat to Split. Arriving at Split was delightful as the beautiful facade of the Diocletion’s palace (300AD Roman/ Venetian origin) is right at the port. Within the walls of ... read more

After our sailing it was back to the Bongo, although we had a terrific week on the yacht, it seemed good to be on the road again. We headed off to Krka National Park just north of where we had been sailing. Referring back to what we said of an earlier blog about not knowing what to expect of our next campsite. We arrive at Camp Marina just outside the National park. If you imagine one of those road trip movies where the car pulls in to a garage in the middle of nowhere, where a lone attendant is sitting on the veranda as though they were the first customer they had for a looong while, well that was the scene that met us. All we needed was the tumbleweed to drift across-there was hardly ... read more

Day 61-68 Sailing in Croatia When we first decided to embark on this big trip, being keen sailors, the intention was to sail the coast from the Balearic islands to Cyprus. Our expectations gradually diminished until it looked like a quick sail from Venice to the Greek islands though still a significant challenge on its own. When we bought the Bongo we realised there is so much to see and do on the land we’d go across country and mix it with some sailing. Booking the boat only three days before we set sail, on arriving at Kremik Marina, we were assigned our boat the 32 ft yacht ‘Escargot’, that’s it I thought it’s the slowest boat in the fleet -On the contrary it went like a dream. Instead of just hiring the boat we decided ... read more

After the heat and pressure cooker of Naples, we headed up to the mountains again. Its a good place to unwind, usually quieter certainly greener, and helps us plan our next part of the journey. So we headed to the Abruzzo, national park, seems very quiet and out of the way but beautiful, with those fascinating Italian mountaintop towns so spectacular and fascinating. On arriving at our site, the owner said ‘First day of the year I have been able to put the shorts on’ it seemed crazy just a few miles south we were burning up in the heat of Naples’ I said something like now your going to spoil the weather.- two hours later we had a rainstorm like you’ve never seen. We aim to visit Croatia, with the view to doing some ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Amalfi June 27th 2011

We took the train from Pompei to Sorrento, a picturesque (but very touristy) town with lots of narrow streets on the cliff edge over looking the Amalfi coastline. Decided we would take the bus on the coast route to Amalfi. Wow! Some excitement the road was narrow in places and hanging off the side of the cliff...good job it was me who had the window seat and not Kim. The bus swerved, backed up, and bibbed at the approaching traffic, something the drivers must do every day, a journey of 1 1/2 hours of adrenalin and amazing scenery. Amalfi was lovely, quieter, with some interesting tunnelled walkways in the town. We couldn’t resist a swim in the sea before heading back on the bus. Amalfi contrasted sharply with Naples , to which we went, again ... read more

Day 52 -55 Pompeii &Vesuvius and naughty goings on! On the 24th August 79 AD, in the Bay of Naples, the Volcano Vesuvius erupted , an immense heatwave and rock, pumice and ash covered the surrounding towns and villages, killing many people instantly. We have travelled south to Pompeii to see one of the largest ruins. It is spectacular, the ruins cover an area the size of Bromley town. They were only excavated by the mid 18th century, and some of buildings, like bathhouses, villas, houses even brothels are well preserved. The site includes an amphitheatre, with two other smaller theatres. It was so good we spent nearly 10 hours there. Our jaunty new hats came in handy once more! We are staying in a camping ground, named Zeus only 200 yards from the ruin entrance, ... read more

Day 51 Tivoli Gardens Villa d’Este En route from Rome to Pompei we had been advised to pop in on Tivoli. An interesting historic town in itself, but mainly we wanted to see the gardens of the Villa d’Este. The sat nav took us a very interesting route around the very narrow streets of Tivoli. It kept saying the villa was near, but we were unable to access it. We decided we had to park up and walk. However parking also proved difficult, thank goodness we have a small camper, we would never have been able to stay otherwise. The villa is right in the pedestrian area of the town (no wonder the sat nav had problems). It was on the site of emperor Hadrian’s villa, but is now an example of a 1550’s villa of ... read more
