Jane & Ange

Testing time before our travels...quite literally!!!

Europe » United Kingdom » England November 15th 2010

The alarm was set for 8:30am, on this, the final day of our travels. Having not wanted this day to arrive, we went downstairs for our breakfast in a very sombre mood. Breakfast at the Rainforest B&B was Tescos' cereals, bread, tea and coffee and fresh fruit. After breakfast we went back to our room and finished packing the last few bits into our backpacks. We then went for one last mad dash to the shopping precinct that was a five minute walk away. Before we reached the shops we had a chat with some of the taxi drivers outside the B&B to discuss costs for a cab to the airport. They weren't budging on their price of 85MYR so we decided to leave it. Walking past a large hotel a guy shouted at us, "taxi", ... read more

This was to be our last full day in Asia and this was the first day we had no plans! We didn't have a guide book for Kuala Lumpur but had heard about the Batu caves so we decided that we might like to go and have a look at these. At breakfast we chatted to a few people who gave us some other ideas of things we might like to do. Darren, one of those people, let us borrow his Lonely Planet and suggested that the Lake Gardens and Bird Park might be a better idea than the Batu Caves. After chatting to Darren, we decided to take his advice, we said our goodbyes and went back to our room to get ready for the day ahead. Just as we were about to leave the ... read more

Asia November 13th 2010

After a little "lie-in", the first on this trip, it was 9:30am and time for breakfast once again! Jane chatted to the owner of the hostel during breakfast and mentioned that we were a little disappointed with the Night Safari. He was quite surprised by this remark and said everyone always tells him what a great time they had, not us! Maybe it was because it had been such a long day and we were too exhuasted by the end of the night to fully appreciate the park. Or being cynical, he just wanted us to tell other guests how wonderful it was so that he could get more commission! Whatever the reason, we are still not convinced that the Night Safari would be in our top 10 of things to do in Singapore. At 10:30am ... read more

Asia » Singapore November 12th 2010

The alarm was set for 7.30am for another early start, so much for this being a holiday! The plan of attack today was the Botanical Gardens, Orchard Road, Clarke Quay, China Town, Little India and the Night Safari. This was to be the only full day we had in Singapore so we had to make the most of it! We had booked tickets to the night safari the previous evening, so we definitely had to be in Little India at 6.30pm to catch the excursion bus. Jane woke completely covered in her rash and was feeling extremely rough again today, but this wasn't going to (hopefully) deter her from the plans. Jane had breakfast, tea and toast, at the hostel. We then made our way to Farrer Park MRT station, with a quick stop at a ... read more

The plane landed in Singapore, Changi Airport at 4:50pm, we collected our backpacks and were through customs in no time at all. We had done some research prior to arriving in Singapore and knew that we needed to purchase an EZ-link card to get around. This would cost Sing $15 each, but would mean we could use all the trains and buses at a reduced cost. From the airport we caught the MRT (train) to Lavender Street, where we would be staying at the Travellers Inn. The newly opened Inn is a traditional conservation shophouse located in Jalan Besar, in the city of Singapore. It was a ten minute walk from the MRT to the Inn, which doesn't sound far but with the sun blazing down (not that we were complaining, we'd seen enough rain in ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sabah » Kota Kinabalu November 11th 2010

Another hectic, fun filled day laid ahead. Jane had certainly gone to town on this trip and made sure every day was as manic as the last! The alarm was set once again for another early morning wake up, followed by brekkie at Fook Yeun. With great sadness this was to be our last meal at our favourite (well, cheap!) restaurant. We only had half a day left in KK as we were going to be boarding a flight at 2:50pm for Singapore. We decided to spend the last half day going to the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, a group of 5 islands located between 3 to 8 km off Kota Kinabalu. The park is spread over 4,929 hectares, two thirds of which cover the sea. Before the Ice Age, it formed part of the ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sabah » Mount Kinabalu November 10th 2010

So another early start to try and find the best transport to Mount Kinabalu, as we had been told that most of the minibuses leave early in the morning. We left Hotel Eden 54 at 7am and went for our usual Fook Yeun brekkie, then onto trying to find transport. We had a rough idea of the where we needed to catch the transport from and headed in that direction, which was about a 5 min walk. Upon arriving at the car park there were hundreds of minibuses and taxis, with each driver trying to get our attention! We found one minibus that was about to leave, they were just waiting for two more customers! Ideal, we had just walked up and we would be off in no time at all without having to wait. We ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sabah » Crocker Range November 9th 2010

Today we went white water rafting on the Padas River, which is claimed to have the best rapids in South East Asia! The Padas River is situated in the interior of southwestern part of Kota Kinabalu that is only accessible by train. This exciting adrenalin rushing tour would take us down to a wave that goes as high as six feet and thrilling rapids up to grade IV. The experience covered a distance of 9km of the rather muddy 200km Padas River that holds 7 exciting and tough rapids! These rapids have amusing names such as Merry-Go-Round Rapid, Break Point Rapid, Scooby Doo Rapid, Cobra Rapid, Curve Rapid, Lambada Rapid and Head Hunter Rapid. Each rapid gives you the feeling of the motion as what the name means. The day started with 20p noodles at Fook ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sabah » Kota Kinabalu November 8th 2010

We arranged for Jad (taxi driver) to pick us up from the Nak Hotel at 6.30am for our 8.15am Air Asia flight to Kota Kinabalu. Kota Kinabalu, formerly Jesselton, is the capital of Sabah state in Malaysia. The city is located on the northwest coast of Borneo facing the South China Sea. The Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park lies on one side and Mount Kinabalu, which gave the city its name, is nearby. On arrival at KK we got a taxi to Hotel Eden 54, we had booked this accomodation whilst in England. The hotel was lovely, nice big room and very friendly staff, who let us check in early. After checking in we decided to take a five minute walk to Jessleton harbour and have some lunch. We had lunch at a local coffee shop ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sabah » Sandakan November 7th 2010

We left Selingan Turtle Island at 7am for the 1 hour boat trip back to Sandakan. Our Taxi driver (Jad), who we had used all the time we were in Sandakan was sat waiting for us. We didn't have any accommodation booked for this evening so spent the next 15 minutes driving around trying to find somewhere for the night. Whilst on the trip to Turtle Island The Mayfair Hotel (actually hostel, which looked pretty discusting from the outside) was recommened to us, unfortunateley this was fully booked. According to Ange, it looked much better on the inside! Jad told us to try the Nak Hotel (same owners as Paganakan Dii), luckily there was a room available. We spent a couple of hours resting in our room and then decided to tackle the 'Sandakan Heritage Trail'. ... read more
